What would you want from a petite brand?

Caramelatt · 07/06/2023 16:33

I usually find selection limited and it is assumed that all petites are skinny and have child like bodies.

I want to see some nice feminine dresses, tops, blazers etc. Basically whole range.

What would you like to see a petite brand offering?

I am thinking of starting one, in case you are wondering why this question 😊

I'm short and fat with massive boobs. So things that fit me please.

Bottoms are usually OK
But tops/dresses. Ugh. My shoulder to underarm is short. Just because I'm large round doesn't mean the armholes need to be 600ft away from the shoulder.

Thanks.

CornishGem1975 · 07/06/2023 16:41

Dresses and skirts are the main things I struggle with. I want midi skirts to be exactly that, midi, not maxi.

Oh and coats! The sleeves on 'normal' coats are always too long. A lovely tailored belted winter coat with perfect length sleeves.

gogohmm · 07/06/2023 16:49

Dd is5'2 but fairly broad shoulders and a 34dd cup. Nothing fits her without alterations (well basic tops are ok but I'm talking about dresses, blazers, jumpsuits etc) she needs smart clothes due to work and midi dresses, ones suitable for wedding, races etc aka posh. I'm not as short but have a short body and 5'6, maxi dresses are far too long (Asda even state sized for 5'10!) so I'd be in that market if suitable for 36e bust (since pepperberry was withdrawn I'm stuffed)

Toddlerone · 07/06/2023 17:04

I want petite clothing that has been adapted to women who, like me, are proportionated, just short. This means that simply shortening the sleeves and trouser legs/length dresses won't do. I need the waist to crotch ratio and the back, especially if it's a blazer, adapted accordingly.

I would like to see a range of petite items that is not massively reduced in range and colour options.

Rummikub · 07/06/2023 17:08

Sleeve length
waist in the right place

What height would you do ? 5ft 4 isn’t petite enough. So perhaps petite and extra petite.

coats
jackets
jeans
jumpers- they are always too long!

ThreeKneeRepeater · 07/06/2023 17:11

I want the proportions to be correct. My main problem is shoulder to waist. Particularly on dresses. Anything with a waistline, it’s always in the wrong place. Straps always have to be shortened. Trousers aren’t too bad as there’s the option to shorten a hem
I’d like to see options for a range of gym wear and swimwear too.

Floisme · 07/06/2023 17:15

I'm probably borderline petite: 5'3 height with disproportionately narrow shoulders and back (most recent bra is 28FF). I can normally get by with a mainstream size 10 or 8 but I'd prefer more choice of skirt / trouser lengths and I find tracking down jackets and coats that fit properly on my shoulders and in the sleeve length is a problem. As for dresses, I rarely bother - it's just too much trouble finding one that fits both my shoulders, hips and is the right length (unless it's jersey with a bit of stretch).

That said, I don't think I've ever bought a single thing from a petite range and the main reason is that I've never been excited enough by anything. It's always always neat and tidy and perfectly acceptable but just too easy to walk away from. It's almost as if they think 'petite' is a personality type.

sheeplikessleep · 07/06/2023 17:18

Focus on trousers and skirts (the tops are always too short and I don’t have a need for petite tops I don’t think as much as bottoms)
Proportion, so not just shorter, but waist/ shoulders suit smaller frame
Big enough range, not just a few token pieces
Genuinely pick items which flatter (ie not cropped trousers which make short women look even shorter, but clothes which lengthen the frame, eg jackets which are waist length, trousers which are ankle length, prints which aren’t big, dresses which cinch in rather than smock dresses which just look like a tent on)
Not rows and rows of black trousers

NotMeNoNo · 07/06/2023 17:25

Jackets ! I'm always trawling eBay for petite jackets.
Clothes for size 16+
Cut to allow for a bust in larger sizes
Tailoring service to hem dresses, trousers etc
Choice includes neat fitting clothes / short skirts even when "oversized" or long and floaty is in fashion.
Not only mother of bride style - smart casual, contemporary, workwear etc.

DonoghueVsStevenson · 07/06/2023 17:25

My DD is petite (5'1") she also has a relatively long torso meaning she can wear regular range tops but when it comes to trousers/jeans/skirts she struggles. Even petite lengths aren't right and the waist to crotch ratio is usually rubbish meaning she has the crotch halfway down her thighs. She has to buy kids bottoms usually and she'd love a range of adult petite clothes that really fit her.

CeeceeBloomingdale · 07/06/2023 17:29

Appropriate sleeve lengths, proportioned waist to crotch ratio, room for boobs

Pigeon31 · 07/06/2023 18:04

5'1 here. I would want a wrap dress that actually fits and wraps in the right place, shirts and jackets with sleeves that aren't too long, and midi skirts that I don't have to take up.

NancyAndLee · 07/06/2023 18:15

I want skirts and dresses that don't drag on the floor!

And trousers that don't need turning up.

And sleeves that don't cover my hands.

No ridiculous dropped shoulders.

No high waisted trousers that come up to my boobs.

And fewer items that are deliberately "oversized"- as this trend rarely suits short people!

FannythePinkFlamingo · 07/06/2023 18:24

As a short person with ample boobage, I'd like petite clothes, and indeed all clothes to cater better for big norks. I'm a 14 on the bottom, but sometimes have to go up to an 18 on top which can then be too big across the shoulders and arms.

behaveasbefitsthesituationwillyas · 07/06/2023 18:24

I am just under 5.1" but I have quite long legs, about 30". Petite legs can be a bit ankle-flappy on me.

But I also find that if I want 3/4" trousers/jeans they always fall in the wrong place (too long) and look awkward.

If you're starting a brand can you include different petite leg lengths, for those of us with different body types? We don't all have short arms and legs! (I also have long arms lol). M&S do Short/Petite and Extra Short in their jeans lately, which I've found to be brilliant.

TheProvincialLady · 07/06/2023 18:31

Anything not made of black polyester would be an excellent start.

Also with the right proportions (for me that means narrow shoulders, small back but moderate bust. Waist in the right place). I seldom buy petite clothes these days but have ordinary clothes adjusted by a seamstress at great expense.

aloris · 07/06/2023 18:32

Petite clothing seems very plain compared to the options "normal" sized women get. I can get lots of t-shirts and long-sleeved plain sweaters and plain pants but the cute things with frills and ruffles and designs on the skirts are never available in petite sizes.

JaninaDuszejko · 07/06/2023 18:35

Good quality natural materials.

adagio · 07/06/2023 19:39

Echo the natural/ quality bit @JaninaDuszejko

I hate sweaty polyester/ cheap fabrics that go out of shape on one wash, but even a lot of premium brands have switched to this now (eg Mint Velvet used to do lovely tops now they are all just as bad as the cheap ones just with a premium price tag).

I would like to see good capsule wardrobe pieces - so a blazer which actually fits across shoulder, waist and sleeve length but helpfully goes with ‘these jeans, this top these two skirts and this dress, and have you thought of this belt’ - and include the suggestions.

My main issue is ‘pretty’ shirts/blazers that fit in all directions (normal size Lycra tops or tanks you can get away with but nice shirts are much harder to pull of unfitted). Petite dresses with waist in the right place are ok from M&S but range very limited and sells out really fast.

I’m 5’1.5 but arguably fairly normal legs just petite body and arms.

LadyVF · 07/06/2023 19:45

Another shortie with big tits here.
So I want decent (ie stylish) tops with appropriate sleeve lengths, with ample room for my tits (so no gaping or straining).
And some decent petite jeans. Bloody impossible to find.
And pyjamas.

NothingTraLaLa · 07/06/2023 19:59

I’ve got some gym leggings from here https://lacunafit.com/ and they are really good (only washed them a few times so far though). They also do jeans but I haven’t tried those.

My biggest need is for petite trousers that aren’t massively long. Next, I’m looking at you. Also M&S since they messed with their lengths - it’s all very well having an extra short but there are only a few styles in xs and they are invariably sold out (and I haven’t worked out how to filter for xs length on their website, so if anyone knows please share the knowledge. Filtering by petite is no good because the short/petite is too long).

Cranfor · 07/06/2023 20:18

I’m 1.6m so not extremely short, but I have a very short torso. Unless it’s a sack dress, the waist sits too low, there’s loads of material gaping at the back, and it just looks awful. I’m fed up with wearing sacks!!

Catsaysmeiow · 07/06/2023 20:26

I’m 5”3 with a disproportionately short torso. Trousers I’m usually fine with normal range so long as they’re low rise. What I’d love is T-shirts/ sleeveless tops with small arm holes so my bra isn’t totally visible. Fine in winter but in summer when it’s sweltering I just want a tank top that’s work safe

WellTidy · 07/06/2023 20:34

Quality materials like wool and silk and cotton, not polyester (Wallis and Dorothy Perkins petite more than have that covered).

Blazers, coats and jackets. M&S used to do these in petite but haven’t for a few years and I really miss it.

Necks that aren’t too low. Arm holes that arent too low.

of everyone, I think Boden does petite the best, followed by M&S (but the M&S website is absolutely awful to navigate when you search for petite as it brings up so many things that simply aren’t petite at all).

PamelaBanisha · 07/06/2023 20:38

I am short at 5’2 but have boobs and not super skinny so I may be a size 14/16 but most petite ranges are too small.

I need shorter arm and leg length but with female curves like boobs and hips and not the assumption that I am super skinny.

it’s also very annoying the ranges are so restricted

I have ££ to spend on clothes but always no suitable option .
