What would you want from a petite brand?

Caramelatt · 07/06/2023 16:33

I usually find selection limited and it is assumed that all petites are skinny and have child like bodies.

I want to see some nice feminine dresses, tops, blazers etc. Basically whole range.

What would you like to see a petite brand offering?

I am thinking of starting one, in case you are wondering why this question 😊

Things that fit over my hips!
Just because I am short does not mean I am straight up and down! I need short length but keep the proportions of everything else the same! I always end up looking dumpy in petite clothes because I have to size up by one or two sizes to get things to go over my hips so it doesn't fit anywhere else!

behaveasbefitsthesituationwillyas · 08/06/2023 15:07

@Leapintothelightning this is true. So many brands seem to think petite = gamine, like Audrey Hepburn or a ballet dancer.. most of us are not built like that!

SparkyBlue · 08/06/2023 15:12

Clothes that are for petites that have curves. Just because I'm 4"11 doesn't mean I've no boobs or bum. Even pre children at a size 8 I had boobs I'm sick of seeing petite clothes designed to he worn with no bra

DontBeBitterGlitter2023 · 08/06/2023 15:25

I'd like the same clothes that are offered in the normal range more often....

Chocolatepeanutbuttercupsandicecream · 08/06/2023 15:31

Midi skirts and cropped or 7/8 length trousers that actually fit!

Iheartmysmart · 08/06/2023 15:40

I’m just under 5ft and have huge 34HH boobs so if I get something that fits across the bust, the shoulders are too wide. I also don’t have much of a waist so anything that fits my waist is too wide at the hips.

Skirts that don’t gather from the waist would also be good. They make me look like a galleon in full sail. Fitted to the hips then flared is much more flattering.

It’s tough being short and round!

VitaminSea77 · 08/06/2023 15:40

Realising that just because I’m 5 feet tall doesn’t mean I have no boobs or bum

distance from shoulder to boobs being shorter so I don’t flash everyone

distance from top of shoulder to under arm being shorter so I don’t have to modify the straps, or even better putting in straps that can be shortened if necessary

doing the same pieces in standard size in petite. So many times I’ve seen a lovely colour to then realise the petite is only available in black!

sleeves that don’t go down to my fingers so I have to turn them up

petite maternity! It was so hard finding things to fit when I was pregnant. Pregnancy didn’t lengthen my arms unfortunately

Dresses and skirts are the main things I struggle with. I want midi skirts to be exactly that, midi, not maxi.

Oh and coats! The sleeves on 'normal' coats are always too long. A lovely tailored belted winter coat with perfect length sleeves.

This exactly

RatherBeRiding · 08/06/2023 16:57

Correct proportions for short people! I am 5ft tall but a size 10/12 so don't need clothes for skinny, narrow shoulders etc. I just want dresses with waist in the right place, not sitting on my hips. Cropped trousers that do not come down to my ankles. I have given up on anything like jeans that isn't "low rise" because the waist is up near my ribs somewhere! Sleeves are always too long. Jackets are always too long. Urgh.

ghostyslovesheets · 08/06/2023 17:02

equal sizing with normal sized - size 10 too bit - size 10 petite too small

Size 10 - bit with shorter legs and body - I'm 5ft 1 but still a 10!

While we are at it - can everyone do S/M/L that goes 8-10, 10-12, 12-14 etc NOT 8-10, 12-14 - I'm looking at you H+M

ThursdayFreedom · 08/06/2023 17:05

@Caramelatt

Don't do it, unless you have money you want to Chuck away!!

As you can see, there are just too many variables.

I used to be properly petite & just needed everything scaled down.

I'm under 5ft, but sadly (due to illness) no longer petite anywhere else, big boobs, big belly.

SirChenjins · 08/06/2023 17:11

Amen to that.

I want pretty much what everyone else has asked for!
I want everything cut shorter, not smaller.
I want round/slashed necklines that fit as opposed to hang down near my boobs somewhere.
I want square necklines that don’t gape with too much fabric
I want sleeves that end at my wrists not my fingertips
I want trousers that end at the top part of my foot not the ground
I want something that doesn’t look like the Anne Brooke’s Petite of yesterday - a variety of on-trend stuff. For some inexplicable reason, petite clothes are often aimed at the older market (and by older I mean 70s/80s - and not the more edgy/trendy 70s and 80s somethings) - I know we often shrink as we get older, but not by that much!

JanesBlond · 09/06/2023 19:08

Shorter torso length in dresses instead of petite dresses being exactly the same with an inch or two off the skirt!

ecuse · 10/06/2023 10:06

Yes!!!!

Sounds great. There’s lots of petite brands that are trend led & styled for the upto 40 market but the selection of good quality stylish basics/classics is non existent. Like a previous post I’d love a quality wool coat that fits. Silk blouses, lovely linen dresses and trousers/jeans that fit. Petite jeans and trouser lengths seem to have increased in recent years and I now have to alter even petite length clothes. I’m 5’1”.

Might be worth trying Hobbs petite range? I got a lovely wool coat from there (I'm 5' 1).

littlespeckledfrog · 10/06/2023 20:31

Agree with previous poster that petite and extra petite sizes would be good, especially for trousers.

Caramelatt · 12/06/2023 22:35

Thank you to every poster here. I am sorry for slow repky, i was travelling and thought I replied yesterday but I didnt post.

I have got some very good ideas from these posts. I do think there is not enough offering for petites but I can also see that brands do not see petites a big market.

My biggest problem is top lengths and also sleeve lengths in case of jackets. But I can see people have different requirements.
