Hunter Chelsea ankle boots - stylish or naff?

Lagirl20 · 06/06/2023 14:27

Are these stylish or naff? I can’t decide!!
I would wear them for walks on weekends, autumn winter, with laid back clothes - jeans, baggy jumper, etc.
I can’t decide if they look cool or a bit naff.
help! What do you think?

I've got some gloss Hunters that are more like chunky Chelsea boots than wellies. I've worn them for all sorts of things.

Blinky21 · 06/06/2023 23:09

I've got 2 pairs that I walk in in winter, I love them and I like to consider myself pretty stylish

WideOpenSpaces · 06/06/2023 23:44

Try Blundstones - similar look but less naff

sausage767 · 07/06/2023 00:49

Practical but ugly. I have Merry People ankle gummies, much cuter.

TerfIngOnTheBeach · 07/06/2023 05:03

I have some Joules Wellibobs in a plain colour. They’re considerably cheaper and I wear them for gardening, dirty outside jobs like jet washing, and for light muddy walks as they’re low.

Very useful to just stick on but I wouldn’t be seen dead in them at a show. I’ve also put mine in the washing machine twice.

There are some similar on Next clearance but cheaper

User18540964 · 07/06/2023 05:41

Both similar Hunter and Barbour on Next

timepoorandcashpoor · 07/06/2023 09:24

My favourite MN-ism is "if you have to ask if something is naff, it probably is"

Wiennetta · 07/06/2023 09:32

I’ve got some but they’re used for walking the dog. I live in a city so full length wellies are never really needed, but short wellies are useful in the winter as you need something waterproof for walking through long grass etc. I think they’re pretty plain/non offensive.

I have the Barbour version of those. I got them for muddy winter walks, muddy dog parks in the winter etc. I was tired of my regular boots or trainers getting destroyed. These are so easy to clean, also surprisingly comfy. Wouldn't wear them going into town shopping, maybe a quick pop in somewhere. I found regular tall wellies too uncomfortable to walk long distances in.

I was coming to say exactly this.

Zipps · 07/06/2023 09:40

I have the Barbour ones too. I wear them for dog walks, festivals and I do run errands in them when it's pissing down.

CremeEggThief · 07/06/2023 11:01

If you like them get them, simple as that! Stop caring so much about others think!

Tryingtonotworry · 07/06/2023 12:38

I had this exact pair and they are great for dog walking, I see them as a more stylish welly.
What ever you do, do not buy them from House of Fraser, mine developed a fault and despite Hunter confirming in an email it was an issue with the manufacturing
and that HOF should do the refund it took about 5 months of battling with them over email!.
I would suggest you buy direct!
I also have the Chelsea boots from Barbour and they are excellent but less mud proof!

Alwaystheplusone · 07/06/2023 23:06

They’re not naff. Perfect for a festival or walking the dog but they’re unlined wellies so get pretty hot. If you’re looking for everyday casual boots maybe try Blundstones?

AppleDumplingWithCustard · 08/06/2023 02:30

I can’t see anything remotely stylish about these. Functional - yes. Stylish - absolutely not.

User18540964 · 08/06/2023 05:35

Of course they are not stylish, they are wellies with a brandname emblazoned on the front

incognitodorrito · 08/06/2023 06:02

I had a pair for dog walks, the seam at the toe split and left a tiny hole 6 months after purchasing so i always got wet feet in them. They look alright but honestly not worth the money.

scrivette · 08/06/2023 06:33

I wouldn't buy Hunters again, they started to leak after about 6 months. They are very comfortable though.

PuppyMonkey · 08/06/2023 06:36

I’ve got some like this, except mine are caked in mud from dog walking which I think adds a real touch of panache. Grin

PuppyMonkey · 08/06/2023 06:38

Oh yea just remembered, the first pair split within a year so I told Hunters and they sent me a replacement pair which seem okay so far but I wouldn’t buy this brand again tbh.

DilemmaDelilah · 08/06/2023 06:46

They are short wellies - and very expensive short wellies. You can get similar for 1/4 of the price - not stylish enough to pay the extra.

SD1978 · 08/06/2023 06:50

Walking the dog, gardening, walking to and from work if it's wet and muddy yes- anything else I wouldn't. They are ankle length wellies, and look like ankle length wellies. I don't see that as a casual shoe at all I'm afraid.

Fraaahnces · 08/06/2023 07:44

They’re not for going out to cafes or pubs? Or even the suoermarket? I’d want to read the reviews to find out how slippery they were and if they get very cold if I was walking my dog. (She’s a giant breed idiot and I’m a klutz.) I’d also want to see how supportive they are.
Meanwhile, if you want something a bit more versatile, and you are going to spend a decent amount on waterproof easy on/off dog walking boots (or shoes) I can recommend these… I have had the Glacy boots for about four years and they’re comfy and very easy to clean. They look great and keep my feet warm and dry. (Looking to get some new ones this year as I want a different colour.)
You absolutely MUST go up a size or 1.5 if you have wide feet. I don’t know why Sorel does this, but read the reviews and you will see that it’s universal with this company.
BTW, they go on sale frequently, so keep your eye out. Don’t pay full price!

User18540964 · 08/06/2023 07:51

If you are going for this type of branded footwear I would always look in the Next sale or the clearance section as I have always bought this type of footwear from there at half price, I would never pay full price for it

jay55 · 08/06/2023 09:18

I saw someone wearing these at work yesterday. They looked okay from a distance but way too welly like up close (we were in the same lift) and all I could think was how sweaty their feet might get.
