If you were getting married but not telling anyone…..

……what would you wear?

For context, DP and I have thrown this idea around a bit over the years. Many reasons for this, but the likely scenario is we would get two witnesses off the street and just do it at the registry office, have a nice dinner to ourselves then never tell anyone.

Just a bit curious, if you ever considered doing this (or can let your imagination run riot now!) what would you wear? Weddingy type dress? Jumpsuit? Jeans?! Has anyone done this and what did you choose for your outfit?

I wore a vintage 1950s champagne coloured heavy satin dress with loads of beading and rhinestones.

This sounds amazingly glam.

I did this late last year. I wore a deep green velvet slinky dress and had wavy long hair with little diamonds. It was the kind of dress I knew my dp would love, and seeing his face was so gorgeous. He wore a nice suit and so did our son.

This sounds like you had a perfect day.

(Don't tell anyone but I got it for £25 'cos there was some staining. I had to take it in as it was too big tho, so staining gone😁)

It was lovely.

Hope you are getting some inspiration from this thread.

We did this too. We had such a wonderful day. We had two friends who worked nearby pop in on their lunch break. We didn't have any words or music, just the standard simplest version. We didn't exchange rings or vows. Afterwards we went for lunch in a nice restaurant just the two of us and then went to a national trust garden for a stroll. We started mentioning it casually to people a week or so before, and one of them dropped by a cake which was really thoughtful and made a really sweet day feel that little more special. We just wore our ordinary clothes. I must say, it felt like a proper wedding, i totally understand the fun that can be had with all the traditional stuff, but it felt like we took it down to its core meaning.

PurpleishDahlia · 03/06/2023 20:46

Not sure if it will attach properly - I wore something like this. Our witnesses were a lovely lady I found on Mumsnet and offered to sign for us, and our photographer. Not what you asked but can I also say it was great having a photographer even though it was just an elopement at the City chambers. So relaxed with just the two of us, and lots of lovely pictures to look back on the day :)

I knew a couple who got married in riding gear. The parents became rather carried away with the wedding which had been booked, so the happy couple decided to book a wedding in the register office for early morning. They went out horse riding, hitched the horses outside and got 2 witnesses off the street. (my friend was one of the witnesses). Then went home to tell the parents!

CurlewKate · 03/06/2023 20:50

I can't imagine wanting to- but if I did, I think I'd go for jeans and a white linen shirt. And white trainers.

InspectorGamache · 03/06/2023 20:53

White linen maternity dress. We gave a single photo. No regrets.

I absolutely adore the sleeves on this! So classy.

@Idrankyourbananamilk i did it!!

I wore a wedding dress. It’s was my only day to be a bride and I always wanted to wear a weddings dress.

cooldarkroom · 03/06/2023 20:59

I wore a wrap dress bought in a sale & long boots (january)

tourdefrance · 03/06/2023 21:00

DP and are planning on getting a civil partnership at some point.

I think I’d definitely wear a pretty dress at least.

Mix56 · 03/06/2023 21:00

Beautiful blue, with little flowers

I bet you looked amazing. There is a tiny part of me that wants a long white dress, but a much bigger part that knows I’ll trip over it and get muddy handprints all over it 😂

What colour if you don’t mind me asking? I’m of a mind to perhaps not go for white. I’m 1) blond and pasty and 2) given to getting grubby marks on anything white I own within an hour!

It was multicoloured silk with an abstract print - reds, greens and yellows on a black background with a cropped red cashmere cardigan and red flats. I just didn't want any fuss and, even if I had done, I wouldn't have picked white as like you I'm fair haired (though mainly grey now) and pasty.

The way you describe it sounds stunning! In fact the whole outfit sounds so put together. I’m off to Google abstract silk dresses!

I'd probably wear a cream trouser suit!

noodlezoodle · 03/06/2023 22:11

I wore a simple knee-length cream dress from Monsoon bride and had a blue bouquet.

If I was doing the same thing now and had a bit more time to plan I'd go for a cream trouser suit.

In the US we have City Hall weddings and Cup of Jo has published pics from lots of them - you can see a whole range of looks here! https://cupofjo.com/?s=city+hall+wedding&submit=

LadyBird1973 · 03/06/2023 22:24

I would buy something that made me feel beautiful. Not jeans or anything I'd wear everyday - it's your wedding snd you should feel special. I would also take a few photos, even if they are just done by your witnesses on your phone / I think you'd regret having no pictures at all. I don't know if you have it plan to have children but mine have liked to see our wedding photos.
I love the idea of quietly going off and getting married - I wish I'd done this.

Idrankyourbananamilk · 03/06/2023 23:04

@noodlezoodle the city hall weddings are exactly the sort of thing I’ve got in my head when I picture sneaking off to do it!

My most favourite dress, (besides my wedding dress) was a pure silk one I bought to attend another wedding in Debenhams. The colours were perfect for me, the dress felt lovely on and the design was exactly what I needed to hide my bad bits and accentuate my best.

So guess I'm saying do a bit of thinking first about colours /fabrics/styles that have made you happy and confident. Or even go to a stylist. A dress doesn't have to be a bridal dress to make you feel a million dollars. Good luck!

Oh and I had a vowel renewal a few years ago, it was festival/bright colours themed. I wore this haircomb. Was lovely.

Lots of ideas for special hair accessories on there.
