Estée Lauder Double Wear foundation - alternative?

Rufus27 · 29/05/2023 20:58

DW has served me well for several decades. I love the full coverage (hides my awful dark circles) and staying power, plus it has the perfect colour match for my fair but yellow tinged skin (Sand). The problem is that despite having quite oily skin, as I’ve hit middle age (or rather, as I go beyond it) it’s started to kind sit on top of my skin, making wrinkles and cracks very prominent. Has anyone found an alternative which offers similar staying power and coverage, with a decent range of shades?

I’ve wasted £££s so far looking for alternatives but can’t find anything as reliable as DW. Can anyone suggest anything suitable?

I have Futurist and love it, but it has nowhere near the coverage of DW. Nor does Luminous Silk. Both are hydrating foundations with added glow. Even if you build them up, you still don't get the full effect of DW.

I switched from DW to Il Makiage. Very happy with it

Another vote for Il Makiage - surprisingly good match considering it's all done online!

As we age, full cover becomes very unattractive. Aging skin looks shockingly bad with full coverage. It makes the skin look even older.

overthinkersanonnymus · 30/05/2023 17:10

Is futurist non transferring, like DW?

I'm forever touching my face 🥴

Oh definitely. I have never worn DW but DD does.
@overthinkersanonnymus I don't find it transfers no.

As we age? What age is acceptable to still be wearing DW, would you say? I mean, heaven forbid I should be walking about with skin that looks older than the rest of me.

You can wear it into your 90s if you so wish but it really makes older skin look older than it is. Full coverage makes older skin look flat, dry and crepey. Why would anyone want to do that to themselves? Full coverage ages you once your skin is no longer taut. I don't think anyone wearing makeup wears it to make their face look older than it is. Unless they are underage

SirChenjins · 30/05/2023 19:22

What do you mean by aging skin? Before you made that ageist comment you must have had an idea of when women faces start to look flat, dry and crepey when they wear DW. 50? 60? 70? Older? Are you applying that random rule to all women of that as yet unidentified age or just some?

You are obviously on a rant about something but I'm not entirely sure what. People wear makeup to look nice. No one wears makeup to look a bit worse than without. That's the whole premise of makeup. To make one look nice. Wearing a product that makes you look crepier and flat/dry mask like is not making one look nicer. That's my point. Once our skin loses laxity, products like DW do us no favours. You appear to be trying to drag this into some fight about aging. You are on some tangent. This is a thread about makeup.

Does Futurist have good coverage?

Yes

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 31/05/2023 07:32

** but you can mix it with DW if you want more.

BluebellBlueballs · 31/05/2023 07:39

As I've aged I've ditched the full coverage, invested in Skincar and just use a very light tinted moisturiser or serum with a bit of powder on top. I realise that doesn't answer the OPs question but thought I'd give a different perspective.

BluebellBlueballs · 31/05/2023 07:39

*skincare

Rina66 · 31/05/2023 08:10

Agree with @MrsPelligrinoPetrichor and mix with primer, apply with a buffing brush and I sometimes just dab over it with a damp make up sponge if I think I've been too heavy handed! I do find the bottle needs a good shake before you use it due to the high water content and I would assume (I'm no scientist) all the other ingredients sink especially the SPF element of titanium oxide. A new bottle always goes on better!

I've used for over 30 years and have never found a non transfer to match it. I'm 57, I still look better with it than without it.

Oh, and a new find that really works is the Charlotte Tilbury Airbrush Setting Spray - I do a couple of spritz over my finished make up and it definitely gives it a hydrating glow, I've been asked twice in the last week, since I've had it, what I'm using. I'm going to buy the handbag size to use when I'm out and about!

morelippy · 31/05/2023 08:12

DW user for many many years, now almost 60 and agree too heavy now and doesn't sit like it used to.

Tried futurist but too 'rich'. Almost too oily so tried the DW light which I love. It gets a slating on here for not enough cover but for me it's perfect for blurring it all better without me looking like a clown.

No rant here, just asking you to explain your ageist comments - which you haven’t been able to do. You’re absolutely right, it’s a thread about makeup - so I would ask you politely not to make arbitrary comments about flat, dry, crepey skin on older women.

powerrangers · 31/05/2023 09:04

@SirChenjins you seem to have misunderstood what ageist means. Acknowledging aging. Acknowledging the effects if aging and acknowledging that makeup use is often to soften the signs of aging is not ageist. I think you are on the wrong board.
Either that or you like throwing around terms like 'ageist' to feel superior. You don't come across as superior. You come across as confused.

SirChenjins · 31/05/2023 09:10

And you come across as someone who’s made an ageist comment and is trying to back pedal because she knows that people on this board don’t tolerate them.

Now, back to makeup (without any negative age-related comments).

You appear to be scared of ageing. You really need to learn to embrace it. Acknowledging that our skin changes and that we can benefit from changing the products we use is not ageist. You may like you skin to look very crepey and dry. That may be your goal. It’s not mine. I like my skin to look glowy and plump and hydrated. DW fails to do this on many people’s skin as their skin ages. This is not ageist. It’s a fact. Your skin may be less crepey at say 50 than someone else’s but it will be more crepey than YOUR skin was at 20. That’s not ageist it’s a fact. I’m sorry that this frightens you. I’m sorry that you are struggling with aging. I’m sorry that you want to cling on to the belief that you look the same as you did a decade ago. It’s not something to be scared of. It really isn’t. It’s liberating. Another huge benefit is the lack of fucks we women tend to give about ranty people 😉

SirChenjins · 31/05/2023 09:15

😂😂

Mrs1010 · 31/05/2023 09:48

@SirChenjins i don’t think you’re coming across very well, the OP clearly finds that DW isn’t making her feel nicer anymore, it’s a common thread on here so she’s not alone, it’s not ageist to suggest that older skin benefits from a different type of foundation.

OP, I ditched DW in lockdown and replaced it with primark foundation, and it is better than any Superdrug midprice range I’ve tried. I haven’t gone for the DW dupe, but I can’t remember the name of it, will look it up. I also spent some time mixing it with DW for the areas I wanted more full coverage but since I ran out I haven’t bothered.

I love the Este Lauder Futurist Hydra Rescue. I'm 49 and it feels really light on my skin.
