Estée Lauder Double Wear foundation - alternative?

Rufus27 · 29/05/2023 20:58

DW has served me well for several decades. I love the full coverage (hides my awful dark circles) and staying power, plus it has the perfect colour match for my fair but yellow tinged skin (Sand). The problem is that despite having quite oily skin, as I’ve hit middle age (or rather, as I go beyond it) it’s started to kind sit on top of my skin, making wrinkles and cracks very prominent. Has anyone found an alternative which offers similar staying power and coverage, with a decent range of shades?

I’ve wasted £££s so far looking for alternatives but can’t find anything as reliable as DW. Can anyone suggest anything suitable?

ELDaw (also in sand) was my go to for years but I have recently moved onto Giorgio Armani Luminous Silk. It has a good coverage but is not as heavy as the DW and just generally sits nicer on the skin

Goingtobee · 29/05/2023 21:28

I switched from DW to Il Makiage. Very happy with it

Recently moved from DW to Chanel le taint. Really like it

How did you find the match? I’ve done a couple of online tests to match foundation and they’ve always been way off.

Intrigued to see what others suggest. I've tried a few but keep going back to DW as its the only one that doesn't budge or transfer. I've tried Il Makiage and Nars light reflecting foundation which I liked but after a few hours both start to look a bit shiny and if I touch my face with my finger it will come off. I'm not even especially oily-skinned!

Fenty pro filter soft matte is great. I was given a very generous sample in Boots so I could check it was the correct shade. I mix it with the tiniest blob of Elemis glow primer and it doesn’t sit on my skin or cake, but the coverage is fantastic, and it really does last all day.

LiftyLift · 29/05/2023 22:04

I love the EL hydra rescue. Coverage isn’t as good, but it’s light and makes my skin glow. They will give you a 7 day sample at an EL counter.

Thank you so much. I will have a look at these.

Has anyone found a direct match for Sand?

@vestedinterests Which shade of Giorgio Armani Luminous Silk are you wearing now?

There is an Avon one which is (I suspect) basically a dupe - I’ll get the name of it in a min when I go upstairs. I was sceptical but they did testers in small quantities for colour matching so I compared like for like. wasn’t quite so heavy on the skin. I found mixing with 20% moisturiser good, then using neat under eyes was a decent combination.

what I didn’t like was a sponge on cream foundation - I had a maybelline one and another brand - that caked up quickly and was really ageing.

vestedinterests · 29/05/2023 22:18

@Rufus27 i use no 4 in luminous silk

Goingtobee · 29/05/2023 22:23

@SirChenjins the first one wasn’t great tbh, too dark for me but followed instructions to ‘ update my shade’and it was spot on!

EnglishGirlApproximately · 29/05/2023 22:36

I've tried Il Makiage recently and while the colour match is great I find it sits on my skin and rubs off too easily.

powerrangers · 29/05/2023 22:37

Estée Lauder futurist. Chanel Le velvet. Dior forever matte or nude. Guerlain (the one in the pebble shaped bottle)

hartof · 29/05/2023 22:40

I switched to Charlotte tilbury flawless foundation. I don't find it as cakey as dw.

MrsFinkelstein · 29/05/2023 22:41

Fenty is great, bit my go to now is Lisa Eldridge. Fabulous coverage and lasts really well.

Handpickled · 29/05/2023 22:42

I found that Il Makiage was just a bit shit in comparison - both flatter and less generous to wrinkles while coming off easier. Nars and Dior were nice but the oil ran them off too easily. The Chanel was good but the colour match disappointing - same for Armani. The best - Estée Lauder futurist - I use that on dorhead and cheeks and DW on nose and chin. It’s perfection! I also mix with oil free sun cream and that’s pretty fine too with a rip up of full strength on the nose.

Cheerfulstoryteller · 29/05/2023 22:49

I used to love DW but after a while found it sat on my skin. Beauty Pie Everyday Great Skin has been my go to for a while, very affordable, it’s a dupe for something…maybe Armani? But found it’s an easy wear, lasts all day and doesn’t cake but has full coverage.

Can I butt in and ask a related question? Says she doing it anyway What are your criteria for a "good" foundation/tinted moisturiser etc? Obviously colour match etc. I ask because I tend to use it and of it feels nice and smells nice and looks fine I forget about it; don't remember to check in the mirror. How do people judge if it's the bees knees or not?

Sorry I should probably have started my own thread

tobee · 29/05/2023 23:45

I mean over the day or night?

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 30/05/2023 00:23

Have you tried mixing a bit of primer in with the DW and applying with a buffing brush?

Estee Lauder Futurist is fantastic, have you tried that already?

Mykittensmittens · 30/05/2023 08:52

Sorry was going to post this pic last night and got sidetracked! This is my DW (tawny, which is darker than sand I think but I had this post holidays) against Avon power stay in light beige which is the closest similar I’ve found but not as heavy.

For me, it’s a good colour match (I have very four, yellow tinged skin ) and good coverage (enough not to need concealer) which lasts all day . Double Wear does all this, but has started to look a bit cakey (and highlight my wrinkles).
