Dianette for acne

Does anyone have experience of how long this tales to actually have an effect on acne? Asking for my daughter who has just started it as a last resort. She can't take roaccutane so that's a hard no. She's tried everything up till now and nothing has worked, although spironolactone worked for a while and then stopped. She's only 19 and it's really getting her down.

It worked pretty well for me for years but then they started to refuse to prescribe it in my thirties. I had a few years of horrific acne but I take dim supplements now and my skin has never been better.

toomanyleggings · 26/05/2023 13:05

Both work pretty quickly. I’d say within a week or so

lostat · 26/05/2023 13:06

Mine worked very well but I did fall pregnant on this pill as did a few people I've spoken too. 🤣

Localher0 · 26/05/2023 13:06

Thanks @toomanyleggings I've read about DIM - so they worked for you? Can you take them alongside the dianette?
Can you remember if the dinette took a few month to kick in?
I've also got her an LED mask and she is using it gradually to build up tolerance.

@toomanyleggings where do you get your DIM from? Just a bit concerned that if she starts both (she's only been on Dianette for 5 days) then she won't know which one is working - but to be bloody honest I don't think she'd care she just wants the awful spots and pain to stop.
@lostat luckily its not for contraception - she has the mirena for that which has had a brilliant effect on her periods but I do think it's linked to the acne .....

Dim is just green veg supplement but it works to balance your hormones out. Been like a miracle for me. I can’t see why she couldn’t take both. I don’t think the dianette took long to kick, a week or so. With the dim though I literally didn’t get any new spots after the first capsule. I was amazed. This was two years ago and it’s still working for me

Maddy70 · 26/05/2023 13:16

It was the only thing that worked for me as a teenager. I can't quite remember how long it took to kick in but honestly it was a game changer

theblackradiator · 26/05/2023 13:20

I took dianette for almost 10 years in my 20s I had horrendous acne and the dianette wasn't that effective on its own. I was referred to a dermatologist and prescribed spironolactone to take alongside the dianette. within weeks my skin was lovely and clear but in hindsight I wish I'd not taken the dianette as my nails became week and would peel. Some of my teeth broke and a required crowns. I had horrendous piles. I feel the spironolactone did quite a bit of damage to my body especially my teeth. although my skin was lovely and clear.

this should read in hindsight I wish I'd not taken the spironolactone not the dianette. sorry for my mistake.

Dianette takes a few weeks to kick in I had it to reduce hairs and spots but my drs moved me off it after a few years because of the long term effects.
i now have the minipill and that works just as well for spots

Seriously79 · 26/05/2023 14:33

Game changer!!

blahblahblah1654 · 26/05/2023 14:33

It really worked for me. Dried my skin out at first but then it calmed down. I stopped taking it in my early 30s and went on another pill but the spots didn't come back.

Desmondo2021 · 26/05/2023 14:35

Dianette worked beautifully for me and kicked in within the first cycle but after about 10 years on it I developed chloasma really bad on my forehead and upper lip so I had to stop. I've now been on Spironolactone just over a year with fab results.

WhereAreWeNow · 26/05/2023 14:46

I used it as a teenager and I think it worked pretty well for me. Roaccutane was the thing that really changed things for me but with hindsight I wonder if it was the right decision. I've seen lots of scare stories about side effects of Roaccutane and I don't think I really knew what I was doing at that age.
Good luck to your DD. Acne is really hard.

ElizaB22 · 26/05/2023 14:58

My daughter tried it, it caused her mental health to nose dive, she couldn't stay on it.

This happened to me as a teen too! I came off it and used Yasmin which helped (although not as effectively as Dianette)

Can I ask which mini pill helps with spots? I thought they were all androgenic?

Snap!

I didn't and we were at it like rabbits back in those days in our 20s!. I often wonder if women who fall pregnant on the pill don't take it correctly I would take mine religiously each morning never late or maybe they are on antibiotics which can in some cases block the pill from working.

Again, snap. 'At it like rabbits' as you put it, religiously took it on time every day, and still one of the little guys got through 😂

Cheekyfuckerseverywhere · 26/05/2023 18:19

I had the contraceptive implant and it gave me cystic acne. If you have acne prone skin progesterone is not for you. Mireya contains progesterone.

I took dianette and it was fine.

Pearfacebananapoopanickle · 26/05/2023 18:29

I was on Dianette for years loved it. From around 14 due to acne until about 27. Then they classified it as a higher risk one and I was took off it. Never found another pill to suit me.

Localher0 · 26/05/2023 19:18

Thanks for all your experiences so far. Had a good talk about it with DD earlier. She's adamant she wants to keep her mirena as it was the last resort when it came to treating her dreadful periods. It's been amazing for that - she's had about 2 very light bleeds since having it for over a year and a half. However I do think it's linked to her acne - but the acne really flares when she's stressed and she's just finished her art foundation course so had a lot of stress this past few weeks. She's also a coeliac and has ulcerative colitis so is coping with a lot! She's been on Dianette for only a week so here's hoping it'll start to kick in. She's also tried sprironolactone but came off it last November as it no longer seemed to be working and she didn't want to up her dose to 200mg/day.
Due to mental health issues and other medication she's on for ADHD/ASD her psychiatrist has refused permission for the dermatologist to prescribe roaccutane.
Her plan going forward is to keep going on the dianette, get the DIM supplements, use the LED mask and check out Skin+me!
Oh and on the horizon is this treatment..... not licensed here yet but here's hoping!
