Summer dresses for travelling (not posh restaurants or lazing on the beach!)

While posh restaurants and lazing on the beach would be lovely, DS11 and I are instead spending nine days interrailing in Central Europe and I think it will be HOT!

We will have minimal luggage, I’ll be mostly in Sketchers trainers (I don’t trust anything more attractive to keep my get comfy) and Saltwaters and need dresses that will keep me cool, can be layered and will pack easily. I prefer midi/ maxi styles and cotton or viscose. I’m not too into cute florals. I’m 5 foot 4 and a size 12.

It seems most summer dresses out this year are more suited to teaming with a wide brim hat and statement earrings, rather than hefting rucksacks up the steps to the castles and train stations of Mittel Europe.

Any links to something suitable would be great. Budget up to about £100.

I have a few from sugarhill Brighton for holidays, a couple of the shirt dresses and a couple of the striped jersey dresses. Next have some in their sale.

Not a dress, but if you were ever interested in trousers, Sweaty Betty do a lovely if v expensive Explorer trousers - i dont have them but a friend does (the shorter cropped version) and they look lovely on her, super comfy for travelling too (Gary cropped yoga trousers look nice too)

I agree with the hiking or outdoor shops. I have one from a few years ago which is in a nylon blend which is breathable, non-wrinkly, and quick drying if I have a swimsuit underneath. It rolls up to to nothing in my suitcase.

I don’t think a jump suit would be great for train wees!

CoronationKicking · 23/05/2023 22:23

Primark do the knee length tshirt dresses in all colours. With a pair of cycling shorts underneath they were exactly what I needed for train travel across Europe last year. Roll down into nothing in your bag

This viscose dress from H&M is cheap, easy to pack, cool and comfy. I bought one last year and it was a godsend.

So true. Didn't think of that!

Don't get anything with a racer back because the rucksack straps dig into your skin and are sweaty

Blueash · 24/05/2023 21:04

Have a look at Apache I have a couple and they are wonderful.

Atishoos · 24/05/2023 21:40

Would you consider palazzo pants in a light flowy fabric? I found them great, and reduced the chub rub when walking around a fiery hot Rome. If you get the right fabric they can be rolled up and flung in a backpack with no worries about crushing etc. Team with sleeveless light cotton vest tops and a couple of flowy overshirts.

I am liking the look of some of the dresses shown though! It's just that I'm never comfortable wearing a dress in the heat, the sweat (sorry) seems to just gather in my inner thighs and nether regions!

Sounds like a great trip, enjoy.

You don’t want cotton jersey in very hot weather as it is far too hot. Stick with cotton is my advice.

I've got this lovely White Company one in 2 different colours, it's the most flattering and simple summer dress ever. Ideal for summer hols ☀️

That's really nice. Does it work with boobs though as the model doesn't appear to have any.

Usually yes white company clothes work well with boots. I'm a E cup and wear a fair bit of their clothing.

Wiennetta · 25/05/2023 08:55

I would look at Sweaty Betty and Lululemon for practical but stylish travel dresses.

loveinthe90s · 25/05/2023 08:55

Damnspot yes it does - I'm 36E and it's incredibly flattering
