DN, 12 but size 18. Where to buy clothes?

My niece, aged 12, has a brain tumour. As well as leaving her blind and slightly delayed (emotional age of around 8), it has also caused huge weight gain.

Please can you give some suggestions of where to get some summer dressed, t-shirts, shorts etc, in age-appropriate styles (bearing in mind she would quite like jersey dresses etc and is young for her), but size 18/20. She is autistic so prefers relatively plain styles, natural fibres, few seams/ornaments etc.

Thanks so much!

So many good ideas! Thank you so much! I'll spend the rest of the day drawling. Thank you!

The Tu range at sainsburys and george at asda are usually great for jersey dresses etc for the summer. I'm an 18, just over 5 ft and also dislike too many seams/fussy clothes. I have a wardrobe full of very simple jersey dresses and love the snag shorts to go underneath.

I hope your niece gets well xx

It might be worth looking at "old lady" brands which may be good for comfortable modest clothes for heavier shorter people.
Something like this from Cotton Traders leaps to mind.

Bloody hell she doesn’t need to wear old lady brands! There are lots of perfectly nice shops for bigger sizes as PPs say.

Look at next swing jersey dress - I can't link for some reason. Tu may need to get it shortened

@Stylemyhairplease

something like this?

As a size 18 myself, can I also recommend you buy her chub rub pants or cycling shorts to go under her dresses?

PutinSmellsPassItOn · 19/05/2023 11:39

I find Asda really good for summery basics, they sell lots of soft cotton and seamless stuff too. Definitely have a look in there, their cycling shorts are also fab for under dresses and don't roll up either.

neveradullmoment99 · 19/05/2023 11:40

They have lots of lovely things - fleeces, jackets, dungarees, hoodies. Worth a browse. You also collect points and there maybe a discount for signing up.

Mabelface · 19/05/2023 11:51

For knickers, these are wonderfully comfy! Buy a size bigger a they come up a little small. wirarpa Women's Boxer Briefs 5.5"... https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B09Z4SBG4Y?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share

NanFlanders · 19/05/2023 11:52

Another vote here for Popsy Clothing. Lovely range up to a (generous) size 26.

SuperLoudPoppingAction · 19/05/2023 11:56

I'm autistic and a size 18 ish, and often wear kidcore type clothes.
I like frugi which goes up to a size 20, I think, and often has offers on the sale. The patterns they use for children get made into adult size clothing like pyjamas, although they don't do a petite length so would need to be taken up.
I find their fabrics so comfy.

Molke do good things like crop tops and soft bras for people who don't like how tight normal bras can feel, or who might not notice if an underwire was digging in.

oldperson1 · 19/05/2023 11:59

Sorry to hear about your niece hope all goes well for her, I would also recommend Yours or Simply be on line . Also Marisota and Curvissia.

REP22 · 19/05/2023 12:16

I've long been a fan of Simply Be, they have nice selections in larger sizes - Women's Summer Clothing & Accessories | Simply Be. Good sales and slightly more quirky stuff as well. I like their Joe Browns items as well.

Very best wishes to you and your niece. x

Have a look on ASOS. You can filter down sizes and body fit. Their plus range has oversized tees etc. Also their Collusion range is very oversized but with trendy graphic tees. Download the app as they may offer a discount.

TheFormidableMrsC · 19/05/2023 12:18

Also new look do some lovely jersey smock dresses that are good over leggings or cycling shorts for the summer. Lots of colours.

Alazne58 · 19/05/2023 12:21

As mentioned before try ASOS using the filters options.
MangoOutlet and Mango and ZARA.
Bonprix.

anon2022anon · 19/05/2023 12:23

I would look at vinted for some of the stuff mentioned- Maxomorra feels lovely to touch. If you're on facebook there are selling groups on there that you can pick up bargains from. She probably wants an XL in tshirts
https://www.vinted.co.uk/catalog?brand_id[]=307066&size_id[]=310&size_id[]=7&size_id[]=6

Duns Sweden (my favourite) she would probably need a Medium or a large for an 18, as it sizes up bigger
https://www.vinted.co.uk/catalog?size_id[]=310&size_id[]=7&size_id[]=6&size_id[]=5&brand_id[]=837893

And as much as I wouldn't normally recommend it, I would also look at places like Shein and Aliexpress, as they do cartoony style prints that you don't really see elsewhere too.

Oh and places like redbubble for her favourite characters

I hope she recovers, sending love

I also think Popsy would be good. They do alterations too, so would be worth emailing them. It would also be worth contacting a seamstress. I use Little Rainbows on Facebook. Beautiful fabrics. It will work out more expensive than Primark etc, but adult size 18 will have room for breasts, so may not sit right - you may find the v neck very low and the waist line by her hips. My daughter lives in her playsuits I have bought 5 over the years at £40 each, but other than a few t shirts that's pretty much all she wears. The lovely lady at little rainbows will do colours to suit and adaptations - e.g leave a pocket so that the bottom is open to access P.E.G feeding tube. The dress that you posted looks quite a simple one to sew and you may find a willing person in your community who would make one in the exact fabric that you choose. If my sewing skills were up to it I certainly would!

EmpressMoo · 19/05/2023 12:25

Primark have adult sized Disney, Peanuts, Marvel etc clothing that might appeal to her. Maybe also consider looking at their men's range for t-shirts and sweatshirts if she doesn't need a cut that has room for boobs!

Uniqlo is also good for florals and graphic/cartoon prints. They usually have a lot of jersey non fitted styles that are loose and generous eg swing dresses so she might want to size down. I am guessing her frame is quite petite so she might have narrow shoulders and small chest compared to waist size if she hasn't hit puberty? Their styles are quite modest, unfussy and short.

BellatrixLestrangesHeatedCurlers · 19/05/2023 12:26

Very has lots of different brands and free returns so she could try things on and send back as needed. A lot of the brands go to size 20 or higher. If you stick the fabric you want in the search, "jersey dress" etc then it will filter for you. I only tend to wear jersey/viscose and get most of my stuff like this. M&S do some younger styles too and again you can search by fabric and print.

DinosaurOfFire · 19/05/2023 12:27

I echo @doverdiva and would add Kite clothing as well. Bright, soft, cotton jersey, and they wash and wear well too.
