The “how to look expensive” thread

Throwaway1066 · 15/05/2023 06:42

I remember this thread from possibly years ago, but search function is failing me.

Does any one have the link still? Or failing that…..any tips for looking “expensive”

By that I mean effortlessly stylish, simple pieces, maybe kinda like a Parisian!

Hair, makeup, clothes, shoes, fragrance, jewellery…. Everything! What’s you favourite “expensive” tip?

(bonus if it’s not actually expensive)

Do not go for branded items

NewbieSoberista · 15/05/2023 06:46

I aim for this look too. Will have a hunt for that thread!

My tip is to have a small colour palette of mainly neutral colours. I'm not saying you can't look 'expensive' / Parisian chic with a bright, colourful wardrobe, but it's easier to do with a small, neutral palette imo.

Colour coordinate in a subtle way, like wear gold jewellery with gold hardware on handbags etc.

A really good coat for each season. Let's face it, we wear them a lot in the UK!

I used to live in Paris, but must say I never quite cracked the look! Would love to though.

Look after your clothes properly. Learn how to use the full range of settings on your washer, dryer and iron. Wear woven rather than knitted fabrics. Stand up straight.

regular manicures and a light tan

Iron your clothes.

Keep your nails short.

Don't overdo your brows and no foundation cakeage.

LouLou198 · 15/05/2023 06:54

I know a lady who looks like this. She wears lipstick everyday, even if she is not leaving the house. I think this helps!

frankgu · 15/05/2023 06:54

The best way to look expensive is to be rich as you need that all year round glow from multiple holidays, good skin from treatments, ditto hair & teeth. Subtle delicate but expensive jewellery.

Mumsnut · 15/05/2023 06:55

Swishy hair, nails done, light make-up. Good accessories.

DailyCake · 15/05/2023 06:57

Wear clothes that fit properly
No flowery dresses
Don't chase fashion trends slavishly
good quality accessories

SurpriseSparDay · 15/05/2023 07:58

a light tan

You may want to think about this a little. You do understand that people who are not white are also allowed to be on MN?

ImAvingOops · 15/05/2023 08:43

@SurpriseSparDay people think about themselves when they reply and what they would do - so it's not unreasonable or racist for a white person to reply with advice that would be useful to them in the OP's position.

SurpriseSparDay · 15/05/2023 08:52

Actually people tend to respond (to this type of thread) based on what they’ve seen, and on what they believe to be ‘definitive’!

SurpriseSparDay · 15/05/2023 08:55

(And we don’t know the OP’s ‘position’.)

Sorry to be picky but often these threads go to ‘blond swishy hair with highlights’ …

humblemeep · 15/05/2023 08:59

Any particular brands that look particularly good without spending a lot?

I think my curly hair lets me down, no matter what I do, it looks scruffy, but I'm not prepared to ruin it by straightening it, so I'll remain scruffy 😂

frankgu · 15/05/2023 08:59

I would add eyebrows as well

notanicepersonapparently · 15/05/2023 09:13

IMHO the whole expensive/Parisian look depends on good grooming. So spend your pennies on skincare and at the hairdresser rather than on eyeshadow pallets and nice tops. Ie the things that are fun to buy

Don't be ridiculous- skin colour doesn't make someone look "expensive"

I agree that comment made me wince

Usernamen · 15/05/2023 09:17

I love this look! Very Meghan Markle - she seems to get it exactly right.

Agree that it’s a lot to do with grooming and glowing skin / shiny hair, as much as it is to do with clothes and accessories.

Possiblynotever · 15/05/2023 09:18

@SurpriseSparDay actually, if you have a dark complexion I think it is easier to look at your best. I think that darker skin tones glow. Very white (thr very light blond), thend to have a very uniform complexion that is more difficult to keep ( and make up.)
I think that dark skin is more prone to dark spots and needs a lot of care. But a really dark skinned woman dressed in brown or black is a joy for the eye if she has good posture.
The same I can say about a woman with a light skin that dresses in very light colours (the camel/beige/ white combination). Again, with good posture.

Ohfgsjon · 15/05/2023 09:28

Why do so many people use Paris as a benchmark. I used to live in Paris and people were no more or less stylish and chic than in London.

I think its really difficult to make yourself look rich but it is possible. Take Jade Holland Cooper. A very attractive woman in her pre-marriage days but the transformation is astonishing. She now screams wealth. The hair, the make up, the subtle tweaks, the new teeth, the new lips, the exceptionally expensive clothes and make up. You can do it too. Just become extraordinarily rich and it's yours to be had.

frankgu · 15/05/2023 09:29

tbh clothes are that important. Rich people look rich even in joggers!
