The “how to look expensive” thread

Throwaway1066 · 15/05/2023 06:42

I remember this thread from possibly years ago, but search function is failing me.

Does any one have the link still? Or failing that…..any tips for looking “expensive”

By that I mean effortlessly stylish, simple pieces, maybe kinda like a Parisian!

Hair, makeup, clothes, shoes, fragrance, jewellery…. Everything! What’s you favourite “expensive” tip?

(bonus if it’s not actually expensive)

I agree that comment made me wince

I'm willing to bet a lot of money that you are both white.

Twilightstarbright · 15/05/2023 09:41

Well fitted clothes. No one gives a shit what size you wear but you’ll look a lot better in something which fits rather than squeezing into what size you think it should be.

Look after your clothes properly. Learn how to use the full range of settings on your washer, dryer and iron. Wear woven rather than knitted fabrics. Stand up straight.

Yes to the comment about standing up straight. I know that I will certainly take notice if someone has a good posture. I am not sure how else to phrase it. But having a good posture is a plus. There is a reason that finishing schools used to, and most likely still place so much focus on deportment.

Find your Kibbe type an dress accordingly.
Neutral colours and minimal lines.
Coordinated acessories are probably no.1 in terms of looking "put together" and expensive.
Plenty of vids on YouTube on this subject.
Focus on the right coats/blazers shoes and bags which can basically hide everything else.
Scarfs and sunglasses.
Good skin.
Short neutral nails
"Less is more" make-up

Before n after.

Are you sure you’ve got the before and after in the right order?

Unfortunately I think this is key!

a light tan

You may want to think about this a little. You do understand that people who are not white are also allowed to be on MN?

I don't see the problem. People who arent white also tan?

Bananah · 15/05/2023 09:52

Avoid obvious logos. People who are truly rich don’t feel the need to wear something that screams “look at me, look what brand I have!” You need to be understated. People who are in the know will know where your bag is from without needing to see a logo. Keep clothing simple and neutral but high quality.

Apart from that, as pp have said it’s about grooming. Light makeup, expensive hair, slim figure from an expensive gym subscription and probably a nanny so you can afford to go regularly.

LadyVictoriaSponge · 15/05/2023 09:53

If the before is the denim shirt picture she looked far better than the ‘real housewives’ look in the second, she does not look expensive in that picture at all, in fact I would say the opposite.

Any particular brands that look particularly good without spending a lot?

I think my curly hair lets me down, no matter what I do, it looks scruffy, but I'm not prepared to ruin it by straightening it, so I'll remain scruffy 😂

I completely disagree that curly hair makes you look scruffy. It's just harder to care for but, maybe becuase DD has insanely curly hair that I struggle with, when I see women with curly hair that's styled well it immediately makes me think that they're super women! Grin

I am not always very good at the dressing and stylish thing but I completely agree with having clothes that fit - not only do they look better but you fiddle with them less and feel more comfortable and confident which is half the battle. If you gain a little weight, you will look better wearing clothes a size up, for example.

I'm also a big believer in things like good quality jumpers, scarves, jackets, bags etc. I have a wide selection of cashmere and silk scarves, which always make me feel good and one or two good bags which I whip out when I need to eg when meeting a new client or whatever.

frankgu · 15/05/2023 09:54

Plenty of very rich people like to label bash!

SurpriseSparDay · 15/05/2023 09:58

I really wouldn’t risk it, @MissLucyEyelesbarrow! Times are hard; you don’t want to lose your money …

ImAvingOops · 15/05/2023 10:00

There's a difference between looking rich and looking expensive. Anyone can look rich if they buy very expensive things. Looking expensive is about the details and putting in the effort (or spending the money) to get great skin, hair In beautiful condition and well styled, healthy looking nails, being in good physical condition and getting clothes adjusted so they fit perfectly and having a lifestyle where you can take proper care of your clothes.

Brown person here. You do understand that we also tan in the sun?
I'm a sort of greyish-mud-brown in the winter and a lovely caramel colour in the summer. So yes, health concerns aside, a bit of a tan also makes us look better/more groomed/like we can afford a holiday!

I'm white but don't agree with changing my skin colour will make me look more expensive. It will make me look orange.

ImAvingOops · 15/05/2023 10:12

A little bit of sun gives a healthy glow - like you can afford to go on holiday a lot!

SurpriseSparDay · 15/05/2023 10:13

You do understand that many, many people are well beyond ‘a light tan’? Can they not also look expensive?

It was at best an unthinking and exclusionary comment. Astonished that anyone would try to defend it.

And no, I’m not posting a photo of myself to justify my right to comment.

Absolutely agree. She looked ‘Chelsea’ before and looks ‘Essex’ now (I am very fond of Essex)

lilacbunny · 15/05/2023 10:17

I'm pale, and I think I look more elegant and expensive in my natural skin tone compared to those wearing fake tan around me.

My Middle Eastern family who are olive skinned - brown always look expensive because it's their natural tone! And they invest in good skin care and hair. So even though I know they wear boohoo and Primark. You would never believe it!

Pigtailsandall · 15/05/2023 10:19

I think good tailoring, which doesn't mean it need to be pricey. I have a friend who always looks stylish but she goes in to cheap(er) shops very methodically, and turns every garment inside out, looks at the construction, the material etc, and always buys what looks good on her and hangs well, instead of what is super-trendy. When I last met her, she'd bought a blazer from Tesco clearance for £11, and then paid £35 to alter it at the tailor's - it fitted her amazingly well. I think getting clothes altered so they fit you perfectly is totally underestimated.

I think she's probably talking about how a light tan would look more expensive on a WHITE person with ruddy skin.

Not that everyone regardless of skin tone has to conform to a light tan...

Why are there so many keen to take offence at the slightest thing. And I speak as the Mum of several mixed race kids. Yes, they change colour too but really don't like to sunbathe.
In many cultures pale skin is considered the holy grail. But as a blonde Anglo Saxon I look so much healthier with a tan.

Throwaway1066 · 15/05/2023 10:25

Thank you for the links, not sure why my searches turned up nothing!

If you were to buy one “expensive” (doesn’t have to actually cost lots, preferably doesn’t!) item for this summer, what would it be?
