Breastfeeding in a tie wrap dress- how??

I have a wedding to go to next month and I am breastfeeding my baby. I really like the look of some tie wrap dresses I’ve seen but I don’t understand how I’m supposed wear them as a breastfeeding mum.

I’m thinking of wearing a stretchy vest top underneath (I’ve got some already) but what I’m not understanding is how does the tie wrap bit work? Do I have to keep untying it to get access to a boob? If so, this doesn’t sound practical as if it’s a true wrap dress I am basically fully undressing myself in public! If I only tie it loosely to allow easy access then the vest will be visible all the time which kind of spoils the look IMO.

Does anyone have any tips?

I would wear a loose crop top underneath so lift the top up and then just pull the wrap dress to the side just enough to get a boob out. You should be able to do this without undoing the dress.

Thanks. I guess I’m failing to understand how I would be able to pull the dress aside. I’ve got a wrap dress and I tie it quite tightly because if it was tied loosely it just looks gapey around the chest and doesn’t look great. Maybe a wrap dress isn’t the best option but then I don’t have any other option apart from a dress with buttons which never seems to look ‘dressy’ enough for me!

I guess you could loosen the tie of the wrap dress before you breastfeed so it's loose enough to pull the side and then tighten again before you get back up

Yeah this seems a bit of a faff if I’m honest. Trying to untie and retie a wrap dress while holding a hungry baby sounds like a wardrobe malfunction waiting to happen 😂

What about going for a specific nursing dress. Something like this www.seraphine.com/en-gb/sky-blue-maternity-nursing-dress-with-neckline-tie/

Buy a wrap dress made of stretchy fabric like jersey? Might help

Mmmmpavlova · 14/05/2023 12:14

Yeah OP the tie wrap dresses are a bit annoying IMO.

The best type are the ones which have a wrap top but a normal skirt. They are usually surprisingly easy to pull to one side, even eden quite fitted, and still look fab and dressy.

I have a selection of bandeau style crop tops to wear under dresses, so I can pull this up for coverage, a bit like the one up one down technique. Amazon do these in multiple colours really cheaply so you can find something that matches with the colour of your dress for ultimate discretion while feeding.

Mmmmpavlova · 14/05/2023 12:18

Faux wrap dress, I think they're called. Much less faff than buttons or tie wrap dresses and I think can look more dressy. You also don't end up with your knees/ thighs poking out of the slit every time you move or sit down...

That dress is gorgeous but sadly way out of my budget 😭

Jersey would be a great fabric to pull aside. I just haven’t seen any dressy enough for a wedding that don’t cost the earth! Will keep looking though.

There's also a really good Facebook page called Can I Breastfeed In It? UK which is worth checking out!

I just sort of pull my boob over the wrap, I’ve never had to undo the wrap… but maybe it depends a bit on your figure?

Something like this? Silk Fred has a large selection of wrap dresses and is a good place to start.

I’m not keen on that dress. It looks great on the model but wouldn’t like nice on me. I’ve got quite a small top half so I can look quite swamped by too much loose fabric. I do like a lot from Silk Fred though. I think I need a stretchy figure hugging style like this one: https://www.silkfred.com/womens/clothing/dresses/long-sleeve-dresses/jenerique/long-sleeve-midi-wrap-style-dress-in-geometric-floral-print?locale=en-GB&universal=true&utm_campaign=PMax%3A%20PLAs_Wholesale%20Dresses_Smart&utm_medium=cpc&utm_source=google&gclid=CjwKCAjwjYKjBhB5EiwAiFdSfvSa_eCkQQ00KPVSXyk-hLh1keAXREyHm1fJ4yjrdbDYId3KEls1SBoCmJYQAvD_BwE

I Am on that FB page too. I haven’t found it very helpful so far as most people on there seem to love these tie wrap dresses that don’t suit me because of how loose I would have to tie them to get easy access. I also have this dress, which was worn by some people in that FB group to a wedding but it’s not what I would wear to a wedding, more like what I’d wear to a BBQ perhaps https://junojacks.co.uk/products/the-olivia-mumma-breastfeeding-dress

You could wear a slip under the dress.
I fed anywhere and everywhere, but at a wedding you could choose to feed somewhere more private and then wear something you really like. Will you have a room? Could just nip off to feed. I did this when I was a bridesmaid and had to undo a zip backed high neck dress!

I think it is to do with my figure. I’m a bit of a pear shape and quite small on top so I do have to tie them across me tightly otherwise is just gapes and doesn’t look right.

I think I’d find a slip more irritating than a vest/crop top. My issues isn’t necessarily what to wear underneath more like actually finding a way to make a wrap dress ‘work’ with the tying situation. It’s not a big wedding so I’m not sure there will be anywhere private for me to feed and we won’t be staying overnight. I am now thinking a tie up wrap dress is a no no as it’s going to annoy me but a stretchy mock wrap style might be an option.

I breastfeed in wrap dresses and loosen and re-tie after feeding. It can be a bit of a faff, yes. If you don't mind second hand it'd be worth a check on eBay in case there are any nice occasion wear nursing dresses in your size. Seraphine as a good shout as PP mention.
