Breastfeeding in a tie wrap dress- how??

Cleanqueennot · 14/05/2023 11:51

I have a wedding to go to next month and I am breastfeeding my baby. I really like the look of some tie wrap dresses I’ve seen but I don’t understand how I’m supposed wear them as a breastfeeding mum.

I’m thinking of wearing a stretchy vest top underneath (I’ve got some already) but what I’m not understanding is how does the tie wrap bit work? Do I have to keep untying it to get access to a boob? If so, this doesn’t sound practical as if it’s a true wrap dress I am basically fully undressing myself in public! If I only tie it loosely to allow easy access then the vest will be visible all the time which kind of spoils the look IMO.

Does anyone have any tips?

If you like the seraphine dress - have a look at Vinted. There are always lots of second hand options on there.

I think it is to do with my figure. I’m a bit of a pear shape and quite small on top so I do have to tie them across me tightly otherwise is just gapes and doesn’t look right.

I think if you have small breasts you can just 'pop' one out. Mine are teens now, but even at my own wedding I just pulled one 'up and over' and that was in quite a restricted dress.

Have a look at Juno Jacks. They do some nice breastfeeding dresses you could wear to a wedding

yeah the zen behind b'feeding in a wrap dress is to pull boob out of the top part. Not easy to do discreetly in my experience but can be easy with a stretchy fabric like jersey.

better in my experience to have a top you can pull up, could you team a top with a smart skirt? I found a waterfall cardigan super useful

I’m open to a skirt and top although haven’t found any nice ones I can afford. That one you sent is lovely just too expensive. I’m on my last couple months of maternity leave and statutory mat May has stopped so times are hard 😭

Yeah thanks, I’m looking at jersey stretchy dresses now. I’m open to a top and skirt combo but I seem to be quite fussy on a limited budget!

I had this same conundrum a year ago and couldn't figure it out in the absence of jersey fabric. In the end I searched for draped wrap dresses (so extra fabric) and subsequently wore the below (french connection Aimee dress) - it's super open and drapey as shown in the pic, but I was able to add a concealed popper to make it more decent and wedding appropriate.

I used to pull the dress to one side, latch my baby and get comfy, but we were quite established at nursing by then and I felt confident enough that nobody was going to notice or care if they saw a little nipple for half a second.

I’ve already got a Juno Jacks dress and on the website it is categorised as an occasion dress, but honestly I wouldn’t wear it to a wedding. It doesn’t look dressy enough Tim my opinion. Maybe I am being picky though?

I think it does - just shown it to my mum and she agreed. You could add a jacket to it.

What about a seasalt dress? They do ones with cross jersey top that are great for breastfeeding. www.seasaltcornwall.com/chapelle-organic-cotton-midi-length-aline-dress

Its a maxi dress, so imo fine for a wedding, and you need to be able to breastfeed so i think you probably need to be less fussy for 1this 1 wedding and go for practicality.

That one is also really comfy!

I found I could hoik a boob out but only on the right. The outer layer of the wrap. To switch sides you have to make a hole in the other side for waist belt to go through and nip to loo and switch the dress round. It does ruin the neckline so get something off Vinted.

DollyP23 · 14/05/2023 20:45

Have you had a look on vinted or ebay for a nursing dress? Lots of people will wear a nice seraphine dress once when pregnant or breastfeeding and then want to sell it. Then no worries about shifting the wrap dress about

Oh I was just looking at that seasalt dress too but am a bit cautious of buying from somewhere I’ve never bought from as I am not familiar with their sizing and fit. I have decided to stick with websites that offer the buy now pay later option with Klarna. I really can’t afford to pay for a dress and then if it doesn’t suit/fit me will have to pay for another dress while awaiting refund.

I may have got carried away as I’ve ordered 15 dresses to try from Quiz, New Look and ASOS! I will stop looking now 😬🤣

I haven’t ever used eBay or Vinted and am a bit reluctant. I really want to order a few and try them on and return easily. So I’ve ordered way too many from ASOS, New Look and Quiz as they accept pay later with Klarna. This means I can try on different styles without being out of pocket. I need to stop looking now as I’ve already ordered 15 dresses to try! Makes me feel a bit nervous 🫣

I wear wrap style dresses when bf rather than actual wrap dresses, so the top is stretchy-ish and can be pulled aside but it doesn’t affect the rest of the dress.

Richtea67 · 15/05/2023 09:32

What about a milkmaid style dress? Maybe a bit casual but you could dress up with tailored jacket, heels etc..should look nice for a summer wedding, and would suit your shape if you're a pear.

Yes, this sounds like a few of the dresses I have ordered. I’ve ordered 15 different styles, some wrap front like you say and a milk maid type one, and also ‘slip’ style and Bardot so possibly able to slip it down. Fingers crossed one out of fifteen dresses will be suitable 🤞🏼

I have a milkmaid style dress on the way so will see how it looks! I’m very excited for all these 15 dresses to arrive. I didn’t even try on this many dresses for my own wedding 🤣

You could say I was inspired by Mels milkmaid look on the Eurovision 🤣

Loads of Seraphine dresses on Vinted, probably only worn once for the same scenario as you. You could get something really lovely for really cheap! Don't discount it OP! Grin

I know it’s me just being fussy but I think I would prefer a dress more at a midi length. I find maxi a bit more casual looking but I know many people would disagree with me! My mini wearing days are over so it’s really only midi length I have left. Knee length is good too but not many dresses at knee length anymore. The midaxi length isn’t quite as floor length as a maxi and that’s good too.

I will keep my Juno jacks dress on stand by and if I don’t like any of the ones I’ve ordered I will happily wear it. I’ve never worn it so I’m pretty excited to wear it but I had pictured it more for a BBQ/garden gathering with friends rather than a wedding.
