Powder over foundation

I'm 50 and often think I should stop using powder over foundation. I find it makes the wrinkles under my eyes more noticeable. I now do the lightest dusting of loose powder possible.
How can I stop using it all together without my foundation sliding off. It feels wrong to not 'set' it.

Do you need to use it over your whole face? I’m a similar age and I only use powder down the centre of my face (where I get a shine) so nose, chin and centre of forehead.

thelengthspeoplegoto · 11/05/2023 22:11

I do give a light dusting all over but I'm the same, T zone. Could try that to see how it goes.

I would try focusing the powder on the key area only. Alternatively you could look at either a primer or a setting spray.

thelengthspeoplegoto · 11/05/2023 22:54

I'll do that. Thanks.

Hi OP, I'm 50 too and finding I have to use much less powder now, as well as brands with finer particles (ie Charlotte Tilbury, I'm happy with the airbrush flawless finish compact, but it's bloody expensive). Also testing out different setting sprays, e.l.f. Makeup Mist & Set Clear Spray is OK for me and doesn't break the bank.

Try pressing the powder into your skin with the brush rather than dusting it on, use as little as poss and only in areas that really need it.

I'm 40 and don't wear any make up as I have flawless skin due to never wearing make up and frequently get told I look late 20s not 40.

Good for you but how is that helpful to the OP

anyway OP you might want to look at a finishing powder it’s normally a bit more finer than normal powder

😂 wow, good for you!

OP, as others have said just the areas where you get oily and a good primer and setting spray will help. Urban decay all nighter setting spray is really good, I’ve tried other cheaper ones but always go back to this one .

WrinklesShminkles · 12/05/2023 06:55

How do you apply the powder? I find brushes hopeless for this. I now use a Real Techniques powder sponge (dampened) and find that gives a much lighter, almost invisible finish.

stillbejeweled · 12/05/2023 07:12

I don't use powder at all. I use primer, foundation/concealer and then a setting spray.

It's really made a difference.

RampantIvy · 12/05/2023 07:21

I gave up using powder in my 40s because it was very ageing. Would changing your foundation help instead? I'm pretty sure that there are foundations that don't need setting.

At 64 I now wear tinted moisturiser instead of foundation as I am finding that less is more these days.

Do you have your hard hat on though? 😁

TheChosenTwo · 12/05/2023 07:38

Definitely look more into setting sprays, for a night out I always use either the urban decay all nighter (which doesn’t smell that nice but is pretty bullet proof on my skin) or the Charlotte tilbury airbrush finish (or something like that, can’t quite remember). And also are you priming first? I tend not to because I don’t really think any of the ones I’ve tried actually do anything but others swear by them. You might find it really helps.

Not ever wearing foundation doesn’t automatically give you flawless skin, but I’ll give you a B+ for your lame stealth board attempt.

Cor, with friends like you....

Learned an amazing trick: after moisturiser sinks in, apply powder then UNDER your foundation. It absorbs the oil before it wrecks the foundation. I use Skindenadvia Bridal setting spray over the top.

tikkanaan · 12/05/2023 20:12

Use a brush that applies it lightly. Only where you need It. Consider the type of foundation - I find the dewey ones slide off my face more easily.

chucklevisions · 13/05/2023 07:24

I’ve mostly stopped using powder for the same reason. I use oil blotting paper (DHC but guess others are available) which takes the shine off really well

squishee · 13/05/2023 07:38

Mousse foundation and a thick round blending brush works for me. I can't bear that "set", cakey, mask-like finish that comes with liquid + powder.
