Can you recommend a good face powder?

Please?! On a budget preferably, I haven't got the money to buy all the products like I used to sadly. I used to be pretty good with makeup but I've lost myself a bit and there's just so much choice out there.

I'm early 40s and am starting to show my age, my skin is quite textured now so I don't want to end up using what I used when I was smooth and line free. I really don't want to be enhancing the lines and pores.

I was pretty dry skinned before so my foundation never really achieved the dewy look, now I've switched my moisturisers around and changed my cleanser I'm finally feeling pretty hydrated but I'm now looking overly shiny. I don't want to be fully matte but just to take the edge off the sheen would be great. I used to use mineral foundation but I remember it feeling quite heavy which I'd like to avoid.

I also have what I think is rosacea on my cheeks, quite spotty and red which I'd like to hide. Dermatica seems to have made this worse so I'm taking a break from that until it's gone. I've replaced my daytime moisturiser with SPF which seems to have added to the shine. If there are any recommendations of one that is lighter that would be great too, I'm currently using the boots solan anti ageing one.

I use Collection. Cheap as chips!

orangelotus · 11/05/2023 10:06

i like the MAC one and although it's pricey it does last for ages

Harkonen · 11/05/2023 10:13

I borrowed dds Glossier wowder and love it.

imapterodactyl · 11/05/2023 10:18

Some good suggestions, thank you! I'll have a wander in boots and look for those on the weekend. I think I need a whole makeup overhaul TBH!

It’s not cheap but the absolute best one I have ever used and I have tried loads - Charlotte Tilbury Airbrush Flawless Finish powder. I use it over her Beautiful Skin Foundation and my skin has never looked better. I am a similar age to you and also suffer from skin dryness and a little rosacea on my cheeks.

RK800 · 11/05/2023 11:18

I’ve just ordered some from ELF, I really like their stuff and it’s a great price point.

Niftythrifter · 11/05/2023 12:20

Not cheap but you can get it cheaper when they have beauty on offer but I like the Nars one which is translucent.

AFishCalledKeith · 11/05/2023 12:44

With regards to the SPF question... loads on here recommend La Roche Posay which is very light and very good BUT expensive. I've been using L'Oreal's Revitalift Clinical Anti-UV Fluid alongside the LRP one and think it is pretty much a dupe for LRP. Once out the bottle, I'd struggle to know which was which. And it's much cheaper. Worth trying if you're struggling with shiny face?

Thanks!! I wanted to give LRP a go but at the moment it's just too far out of my price range. I was recommended it by a derm years ago so I knew it was one of the best. I'll have a look for the L'Oréal.
The soltan will probably be more handy for summer when I have no makeup on top.

I love LRP but tried Altruist this month. It’s so much thicker and more sun cream like I was missing LRP. Unfortunately it will take me ages to get through the Altruist one…though perhaps I’ll use it on the kids!

Might try the one you’ve said.

TwentysixV · 11/05/2023 14:35

Nivea shine control suncream is really good. And rimmel stay matte powder

CaveMum · 11/05/2023 14:41

Keep an eye on Look Fantastic and even Boots for deals on LRP products, Boots in particular often do 3 for 2 offers.

I use LRP Oil Control Fluid SPF50 and the Anti-Shine Sun Cream. I have PCOS and very oily skin as a result, regular sun creams bring my face out in terrible spots but the LRP stuff is great for me.

Do. The L'Oreal one is thin and 'runny' like the LRP one. I think they are owned by the same company so it's almost like there's been some recipe sharing going on...

I used to use Bobbi Brown powder.
Then I found Collection Pro CC finishing powder.
Knocks the £££ ones out of the water.

If you want a more liquid SPF then Biore watery essence spf 50 is great.

Laura Geller balance and brighten, it’s a powder and foundation in one. Very colour correcting

DitheringBlidiot · 11/05/2023 19:14

It's not cheap but I've got a travel size that's lasted me a year and has lots left in it. By Terry hyaluronic tranluscent powder. I use it (30s) and so does my mum (60s)

BriarHare · 11/05/2023 19:17

It’s not on the cheap end, but I love the Laura Mercier powder. I’ve had the same one for at least 2 years so it lasts!

Daffodil77 · 11/05/2023 20:42

I also like the LRP one and again it's not too bad on offer.

It would be worth looking on Instagram for makeup people who have rosacea. One name that comes to mind is Rose Gallagher.
