Stylish vs fashionable

ShinyNewBear · 08/05/2023 15:55

There’s a definite difference I think.
I see women who look good but I would say are fashionable or on trend vs some women who seem to be effortlessly stylish.
id love to be one of those women 🤣
They are usually tall. I always think it’s harder to be stylish when you are short.

what makes someone stylish vs fashionable do you think?

Small boobs help. It's much easier to look stylish with a nice neat B or C cup that with massive FFs or Gs. Sigh.

Niftythrifter · 08/05/2023 15:59

I think stylish means knowing how to put an outfit together and what pieces help to make that outfit. I also think it means being able to give a nod to the trends but not being dictated by them as well as having confidence in the way you dress in terms of your choices etc.

TrianglePlayer · 08/05/2023 16:44

I am short and agree long legs seem to help when trying to look stylish! But Kylie is tiny and seems to look stylish all the time.

TheOGCCL · 08/05/2023 16:52

I agree on the bust.

I think it's partly about an approach to shopping where you seek out the good quality, elegant basics and completer pieces, in consistent colours, eg a black high neck vest top and a black blazer to wear together, and do not get drawn to patterns/eye-catching/harder to pair and wear items. Dress up with classy jewellery. It seems boring and more expensive at first but helps you look more put together. [Note to self].

MummyJ12 · 08/05/2023 16:57

Style is dressing for you, and wearing what suits you.
To me, style is well cut, nicely fitting clothes. Creating a timeless look that doesn’t date. Fashion is fun, but it dictates what we should be wearing now “to be in fashion or fashionable”. Although fashion can still be stylish, if it is a look that works for you.
The two are interchangeable however, the most stylish are those with taste and elegance and aren’t “followers of fashion”.

WonkyHare · 08/05/2023 17:13

I'm short, large of ass, frame, tummy and nork, old, with short.grey hair...all of which should disqualify me from being stylish according to FB..but I get told all the time that I am...and even more mysteriously I get told it by young people too. Maybe there is more to it.

Surprised no one has yet protested at the false dichotomy you present, @ShinyNewBear. Why on earth would the only possibilities be:

Fashionable but not stylish

or

Stylish but not fashionable

?

Honestly I want to enjoy this board - but this is such a nonsensical premise …

(And that’s before the Mensa crowd arrive to tell us that only brainless sheep ‘follow fashion’, or that you can only be stylish if born with blond hair and blue eyes and naturally rosy cheeks …)

I did write in my post that the two are interchangeable….(unsure as to if you read my post or just skipped through the short thread in haste?!)

MetaDaughter · 08/05/2023 19:12

So you did, @MummyJ12 - before stating that ‘the most stylish are those with taste and elegance and aren’t “followers of fashion”.’

JaneJeffer · 08/05/2023 19:17

Height has got nothing to do with it.

And calm your tits @MetaDaughter

MummyJ12 · 08/05/2023 19:18

There are victims of fashion. I’m sorry but there are. (Think Eddie from Ab Fab!!-lighthearted example).
Whereas you’ll never see a victim of style.
This does not mean that all fashion followers aren’t stylish. Or that if you follow fashion then you can’t be stylish. That is simply not what I wrote in my post, and is not what I think at all. However, IMO, the most stylish aren’t followers of fashion. They don’t need to be. They may wear items of clothing that will be “on trend” or “of the moment” but this will not be the main reason for wear. It will be incidental.

Floisme · 08/05/2023 19:28

I was about to say I didn't care any more but that's clearly not true as here I am posting.

What I mean is that I think that what is considered stylish is in itself subject to fashion.
I think that there are a handful of women and men who are inventive and imaginative enough to create their own distinctive style without having at least a working awareness of trends. However these women and men are outliers.

I have also come to the conclusion that the so-called style rules are just as restrictive as the fashion rules.

kitsuneghost · 08/05/2023 19:50

I think extrrmely petite carry stylish very well. Unfortunately fat doesn't which is my problem.

I think I'd agree.

People who are stylish and have a personal sense of style are likely to have their style be the primary driver behind their clothes decisions, and then they integrate some more on trend pieces if they're interested in fashion.

Whereas I think people who are fashionable have the primary driver of their clothes decisions as being on trend.

Both can look good and well put together, but the second group's look probably varies quite quickly as the trends change whereas the first group probably have a broader base of versatile basics.

Of course there is. Some people have an innate ability to put outfits together and look good regardless of their size and shape and others just don't, no matter how hard they try.

I know many plus size people that are very glamorous but they are also a lot taller than me

PlusOneMet · 09/05/2023 12:59

I feel cos I’m fat I have to be fashionable as stylish doesn’t work on me

Waveyhouse · 09/05/2023 13:10

My sister is on the larger side but is one of the most stylish people I know. She’s not particularly tall at 5 foot 5 either.
She always looks great, glamorous and polished. She gets a lot of compliments and just has a knack of putting things together. Her outfits are fab.
I would also say she is fashionable too.

RunnerDown · 09/05/2023 13:15

I don’t think it matters if you are tall or short, fat or thin. It’s definitely about how you put things together and wear the clothes . People can have very little money and do their shopping in charity shops and yet look more stylish than someone with lots of money to spend . It’s about accessories , colours, proportions and just having a good eye. I think it’s an artistic thing.
I look “ well dressed” ( sometimes) but not stylish . I have to copy other folks ideas from the internet - it doesn’t come naturally to me. Although I now realise you have to wear the style of clothes you personally feel comfortable in rather than what someone else thinks looks good.
It’s easier to be fashionable if that’s what you want - but not all fashionable people are stylish. And blindly following fashion trends is where the difficulty with height and size come in because we don’t all suit the same things .

What do you wear?

One of the times I was told I was stylish I wore a knee length black dress, a fitted grey blazer, black tights, orange doc martens, silver jewellery, and an orange crossbody bag. Might have had a big orange scarf on too. Last time I was told I wore a long black polka dot dress, chunky flat black ankle boots, a black moleskin fitted jacket..silver jewellery..and a big old battered leather crossbody satchel type bag.
