What do you wear day to day?

As in what do you find yourself reaching for most often, even if you have plenty other things? Are you mostly a jeans person, or do you prefer tees to blouses, etc?

I look best in leggings or slimmer bottoms so am not as interested in the wide trends, but that makes it more difficult to locate tops that are longer length than boxy or cropped nowadays.
I have only this week noticed that I always seem to pull out the same things again and again, even though in my mind I thought I was more eclectic.
So my daily stuff (wfh, slightly rural) tends to be leggings, big jumper, and in summer lightweight slim jeans or shorts with plain cotton tees. I dont have much variation but am happy enough with that and can pull out something fancy (one dress!) for a rare, smart occasion. Am curious about other people, are you one for variety or do you have a sort of fixed favourite (such as long dresses and so on)?

I am thinking here of the stuff you wear outside of work, really. Just day to day preferences.

It's a constant battle between the life I want to have and the life I actually have. I would love to wear fabulous Cos dresses or wide legged trousers/blazer to work.

In reality, I WFH and go for a long walk most days, so it's mostly M and S or Uniqlo leggings/jeggings, jumpers and trainers day to day. Chinos in summer. I find jeans uncomfortable to wear all day but will wear them for a few hours.

Trying to dress for the life I have right now rather than buy impractical stuff I will never wear.

It's a constant battle between the life I want to have and the life I actually have.

This is exactly how I feel. I have several wardrobes full of lovely clothes and I love pretty dresses/tops. I spend quite a bit on clothes - but then day to day I live in running leggings and T-shirt’s and wear the same 2 or 3 jumpers if it’s chilly. Very rarely have the need to dress up. I bought a gorgeous needle & thread dress bc I loved it but I have absolutely nowhere to wear it! I’m a sahm so that doesn’t help as my days are spent doing chores/running errands and exercising. It’s annoying as I’d love more chances to dress up but my friendship circle has become very much a case of going round to one another’s houses rather than going out. I also never seem to get invited to weddings (no one I know gets married!) and I love a wedding!

BansheeofInisherin · 05/05/2023 17:25

I do go out to the theatre or to dinner occasionally ( much less than I used to). I am in London and everybody is very casual here, so I would feel overdressed wearing anything more than jeans and a nice top! All my friends are very casual too.

LittleWhiteMoth · 05/05/2023 17:29

I never seem to get invited anywhere either! Grin

I don't so much have a fantasy wardrobe but I often get confused about what my style even is. In some ways it's a non style, with contemporary touches, and that's ok I suppose. I used to love the rural uniform, the wax jacket, skinny jeans, white shirt, long boots, but never felt comfortable in so much stiff, tight stuff. I still like the look though but mostly on men.

I now wear a lot of soft, yoga-esque things such as cuffed yoga pants, soft vest slips and a floppy wool cardi, mostly in warm, neutral colours that suit my skin tone.

I sometimes wonder if the 'find your style!' stuff is just capitalism at work, lol. We have too much choice in a way.

We used to throw dinner parties, but we downsized in the pandemic- good thing too with the CoL- and now my house isn't fit for hosting, plus am way too tired. DH also has become more reclusive in his 50s.

I am thinking of just buying some nice accessories- jewellery, scarves- to make my daily uniform more exciting. But I find those even more difficult than clothes.

QueSyrahSyrah · 05/05/2023 17:39

I have a wardrobe full of nice shirt dresses that I envisage myself breezing to work in, with a denim jacket and some nice fresh white trainers.

Reality is much more often jeans (either skinny or wide leg) and a t-shirt or jumper with converse.

What do you think outs you off wearing them? Is it a mind thing (the jeans and tees feel easier to style) or do you think the jeans look more 'you'?
I used to be like this with short jackets, I had so many and loved them but never seemed to put them on!

@LittleWhiteMoth It's the ironing mostly Grin

I always feel nicer and more professional in a dress but when it's 8am and I once again haven't ironed the night before, the jeans and t-shirt are easier.

I've started to feel quite boring / scruffy in the jeans though, so I'm really going to try and make more effort.

LittleWhiteMoth · 05/05/2023 17:52

It's funny how we still see dresses as making more effort, possibly a throwover from the past maybe? For instance, if i wanted to make wide leg jeans work in a simple way it would take a TON of effort for me!
I want low effort clothes that look great, never sure I can master this though.

I love wearing a total variety - I'll think of my last weeks outfits,

Saturday - long sleeve short denim shirt dress from Zara with white converse

Sunday - black leggings, doc martens, oversized beige t shirt, tan zip hoody and oversized leather jacket

Monday - Spanx leather pants, doc martens again , stone coloured cami with a thin beige off the shoulder jumper worn with a sleeveless charcoal berghaus long puffer jacket

Tuesday - black ck joggers with black high top converse and a white and gold Nike sweatshirt it's loose and fairly cropped but I wear a black vest top underneath.

Wednesday- office day so green wide leg pants from Zara, a white t shirt with green and gold motif from h&m and white and gold stan smith trainers, beige trench coat from new look

Thursday - black and white leggings, black vest top, black loose cropped t shirt, black and white Nike trainers, blue and black north face puffer jacket

Today - pale blue denim high waisted mom jeans with thin gold belt, white converse, lemon scoop neck button top, white fitted sports jacket, gold accessories

I used to wear a uniform of same stuff all the time but was always interested in fashion/peoples dress styles and since losing weight I get such an amount of enjoyment putting things together.

SaltyGod · 05/05/2023 18:55

I've decided to dress nicely for me, even if it's just a WFH day.

I've embraced the wide legged look as it suits my figure and I love the leg lengthening proportions.

So this week I've been in a combo of:

  • wide legged jeans
  • wide legged black jersey trousers
  • whistles zip from jumpsuits which I absolutely love and are so flattering
  • cashmere cropped cardies
  • silk cami top
  • embroidered or silk blouses
  • cropped channel esq jacket from hush

All with trainers or flat pointed sling backs in the office.

All with decent accessories so it looks fairly presentable on endless video meetings.

DidyouNO · 05/05/2023 18:57

I'm a mum of four, a childminder and a foster parent to a highly complex three year old.
My go to is wide trousers with elastic waistband for comfort and a vest top plus cropped jumper if it's chilly. Im tall so it's a look I get away with I think and so easy to wear. People often comment I look too smart to work with kids but the elastic waists are my friend!! It's a cheat but so comfy!!

Sounds very much like us, such an effort to have people over and it's hard to keep on top of the mess etc

woodhill · 05/05/2023 18:58

I tend to live in jeans and top on my days off but look smart casual in office

EatTheDamnCake · 05/05/2023 19:00

Jeans and a nice top till I die! The shape of the jeans does vary from season to season though.

At work I wear one pair of trousers a lot. I really ought to buy more of the same. They're just straight leg trousers and truth be told they're a bit too big and too long for me. But I love them.

Now it's warmer I'm going to wear similar trousers but the summer version.

I do love dresses too, but I find them uncomfortable somehow...I don't know why

QueenofLouisiana · 05/05/2023 19:12

I’m a dresses girl. Mainly knee length or midi, sadly with comfy shoes now for my old feet.
I love the fact that I throw them on and I’m done.

woodhill · 05/05/2023 19:15

I would love to wear dresses more but have to wear PPE over clothes so I would be too hot, separates are better

LittleWhiteMoth · 05/05/2023 19:30

Some great variations here! Where do you find the wide leg pants/trousers? I don't do anything 'smart' so would want more casual styles.

I do wish elasticated waists were flat bands instead of chunky puckered elastic though, they always make me feel less streamlined and a bit lumpy. Like if all the tops of trousers were a flat elastic instead, similar to high waist gym leggings. That would be nice.

Got to admit dresses are easier, there's no contest, but I havent seen any I like for years so gave up.

I took early retirement at 55, did work in retail for years, so wore smart things, I never owned a pair of trainers or a hoodie till I stopped working, i now feel like i have lived in leggings, jeans, skinnie, hoodies and jumpers for too long and want to feel smart again, so looking to buy a couple of blazers to smarten me up.

I have a couple of pairs from Karen Millen with a flat elastic waist. I think they are supposed to be lounge wear but they are great for WFH and dig walking

BansheeofInisherin · 05/05/2023 20:24

All my wide leg trousers are from M and S. They have a huge range.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 05/05/2023 20:25

I’m quite mixed I think, but do wear a lot of jeans! This week has been:

Monday - denim boilersuit from Oliver Bonas with stripy long sleeve top underneath. Chunky Adidas white trainers
Tuesday - oversized black dress from Kin at JL. Opaque tights, Veja Esplar trainers
Wednesday - khaki Levi’s 501 90s jeans, vintage grey sweatshirt, New Balance grey/beige trainers
Thursday - black Levi’s mom jeans, stripy puffed sleeve sweatshirt from &OS, black DM boots
Today - the green Levi’s again, tan and cream striped Arket top, cream Adidas Astir trainers.

Jackets have been a cream quilted Cos, black H&M oversized leather biker, dark green quilted Hush. Itching to get my denim jacket out but it’s too cold.

Once it warms up (pls soon) I will wear more midi dresses.

LittleWhiteMoth · 05/05/2023 20:51

Thank you for the recommendations for wide leg/flat waistbands!

In my dreams I would wear strappy knee length dresses all summer, like the slip style in the 90's but you only seem to find them for evening wear. But then I would have to fuss about cardi's and jackets so perhaps I'm better staying with my usual stuff.

Must say I have never worn traditionally female shoes in many years, you know, the typical lady shoe style? I have worn either slip on sandals or trainers/converse, with boots in winter. I keep hearing about how ballet flats are back, and whilst they're cute I can't imagine doing that to my feet again!
