WHAT is wrong with me and trainers?! Help me someone. (pics)

So i started a thread about Fitflop trainers/sneakers yesterday. I need a pair of trainers to go walking in. I've never had any proper trainers only little plimsoll things. No support.

So white pair and silver pair have arrived. And once again i feel like the only person in the world who looks a prat in trainers. I'm size 5/6.

These trainers, and to be honest every trainer i've ever tried on, feel like they look like boats. I want to like them, they're so comfy. But i look down and i feel like i'm wearing barges.

The white ones look laughable and the heel slips off no matter how tight i do the laces, so i haven't even bothered with a pic of those.
The silver - if i lace them tightly they do stay on. But ... !!?

I don't know is it me? They fit, and they're comfy, but do they not look daft?

I'm feeling so deflated. Everyone else looks perfectly normal and nice in trainers 😳

(and sorry about bare feet pics it's to try and show what i'm seeing compared to my actual feet. if that makes sense)

They're high ish at the back and perfect on the side
I have a fused ankle which sits well

AlltheFs · 05/05/2023 16:12

I don’t own any trainers either @Laiste
They look ridiculous on me and rub my heels raw. I can’t wear anything like that comfortably.

I had one gym pair because I had to but they got thrown out a few years ago (were 20 years old).

For what it is worth I think your feet look normal in them though.

I wish I could get on with trainers. I love my walking boots though. Boots are fine but trainers are the most uncomfortable thing in the world on my misshapen feet.

Laiste · 05/05/2023 16:16

Thank you.
It makes me feel better.

I'm quite peed off. I keep side eyeing the silver buggers by the door.

I have small feet (size 4.5 to 5) but am 5'8". I have a pair of trainers that, due to the style, look bigger than my other shoes. To me, when I wear them, they look like clown shoes and I think they look silly, but in reality they look perfectly normal - they're just bigger than what I'm used to. In fact, given my tiny feet/tall body scenario they actually probably look "normal" to everyone else!

If they're comfy - keep them!

thebestbirtheraccordingtoDD · 05/05/2023 16:30

Did you wear them with no socks?
You'll need to break them in with socks first before going bare ankled.

Ps those days look fine.

LoobyDop · 05/05/2023 16:43

They look totally normal and I like them. Your legs look weird in the first set of photos, because you’re holding them funny and it’s an odd angle. Your legs don’t look odd in the other photos.

As an aside, your wood floor is absolutely beautiful!

Namechangethisonetime · 05/05/2023 17:07

They are not trainers, and going walking in these will likely hurt your feet. Get some ASICS

Or half decent Nikes (not entry grade nikes)

GettingStuffed · 05/05/2023 17:37

If you have a narrow heel you'll need trainers, or daps, that have extra holes at the top of the laces as these are there for things like this. There's are other ways to lace trainers up to rectify other fit issues

Flipflopflips · 05/05/2023 19:57

I've got a couple of pairs of these Veja Esplar trainers. Im not normally a fan of trainers, but can't get these off my feet! I love them, they're so comfy. I've never worn socks, they feel like you're wearing slippers. And they look great with any outfit.

Oh no!

They’re ugly, get some proper trainers that lace up and fit properly.
Nike Waffle one are comfy, supportive and not chumpy.

Addictedtohotbaths · 05/05/2023 20:04

Veja also not proper trainers, crease easily and not very supportive.

Maybe not 'proper' trainers. But they're very comfy and don't rub. They support my feet and still look brand new nearly a year on, so not sure what happened to yours (presume you own some). Since the OP only wants them for walking around a village, I presume running trainers aren't a necessity 😊

PlacedelaConcorde · 05/05/2023 20:45

If you find you dont get on with them after a bit, fitflop shoes sell pretty well on ebay so you can get at least some of the money back.

I think they look nice, although fitflops in general make everyone's feet look. Wider imo. I have some fit flop sandals that make me look like a hobbit but are so comfy

TheOGCCL · 05/05/2023 23:58

This is me too. Most trainers look incredibly clumpy and make my legs look super short, I think it's something to do with the proportion between my legs and my feet. It's particularly bad with socks so I rule them out completely during winter. I also find a lot of trainers very heavy and stiff, the opposite of comfortable. Also too much for the summer when I want to wear them. I've been wearing the same pair of very beaten up trainers for years as they are the only ones that suit my feet, and they don't make them anymore. Things I look out for:

  • lightweight, maybe fabric over leather
  • raised heel to increase leg length
  • low rise, so more ankle showing
  • white and plain - I find dark colours or trainers with lots of colour particularly unflattering

Haven't found anything yet though.

TheChosenTwo · 06/05/2023 00:11

They look a bit like bowling shoes! Think it’s the shape. I’m not sure I’d call them trainers, I think it’s the almost flatform base and adds to the club shape a bit.
However I’d not bat an eyelid at anyone wearing them, I live in trainers at the moment, so comfortable!

LittleWhiteMoth · 06/05/2023 05:04

i loved the old plimsolls myself. 'fashion' trainers always look a bit off and stiff to me, so tend to only buy from trusted brands who specialise in them. Otherwise you look great, nothing at all wrong with your very feminine, lovely figure.

honeyandbutterontoast · 06/05/2023 05:46

I have fitflop rally and they are super comfortable. But I have fat feet so it’s tricky finding the right kind for me.

think you need to find ones more for skinny feet. Vejas would probably be a better fit for you.

This.

FunkyMonks · 06/05/2023 06:40

Wear sports socks to break them in the are ankle type socks but slightly padded and back of heel and under the foot failing that put a plaster on the back of your heel when wearing them with socks until they no longer rub.

I have wide feet and like you find I'm size 5 in some shoes 5.5 in others and oddly a 6 if I'm wearing sliders.

Personally for walking long distance you need trainers that other arch support and aren't flat a sports trainer would be ideal adidas and Nike do lovely ones.
Adidas I'm always a 5 Nike I have to go to 5.5 for sports style trainers because they do tend to be a bit narrow.

PennineWay · 06/05/2023 06:51

They are quite chunky fashion trainers. I don't think they look weird at all but if you're not used to seeing yourself in that kind of footwear I can see why you might.

Have you thought about getting something a bit more slimline? Things like Allbirds are quite popular or even just Converse or something. I have some Asics which have a bit more shape to them.

You probably just need a different style. Do they need to be big clumpy fashion trainers if it's just for walking around the village?

Crimsonripple · 06/05/2023 06:58

The trainers look nice - more fashion trainers than walking as they'll make your feet ache. I wear Adidas Stan Smiths and Vejas. Both look great with jeans or dresses.

If I'm going for a walk round the village for exercise then I'll put on my sketchers or adidas running trainers with moulded inserts.

Crimsonripple · 06/05/2023 07:00

For the rubbing, if they'll stick, put plasters on the heels of the shoe. I have that in my Toms but I do wear them bare foot. Yours will likely just need wearing in.

Whatthediddlyfeck · 06/05/2023 07:05

Laiste · 05/05/2023 15:27

It's really nice to hear from other posters who feel weird in trainers but do it anyway!

Thank you to everyone saying they look nice/normal Smile

I agree i've gone for an odd design and i'd be better trying on in a shop. I just thought because i've had this make in other types of shoe i'd keep it simple.

The bad news is, feeling buoyant about them i wore them out - hardly any walking - and they've rubbed my heels already Sad 😳

Is there a way to soften the backs i wonder?
I should have held fire and worn them around the house.

£90 wasted if i can't wear them Sad

Did you wear them with socks/trainer liners?

DailyEnergyCrisis · 06/05/2023 07:21

New Balance are good for narrow feet- I’ve had loads of styles, currently like the 530 and the 574.

SisterMaryLoquacious · 06/05/2023 07:27

Fitflop Rallys may look flat and unsupportive but they've got great interior support and are perfectly suitable for long walks on the flat - that's exactly what they're designed for. They're not a great fashion look though because anything that's a halfway house adjusted in the name of comfort/practicality never is.
