WHAT is wrong with me and trainers?! Help me someone. (pics)

So i started a thread about Fitflop trainers/sneakers yesterday. I need a pair of trainers to go walking in. I've never had any proper trainers only little plimsoll things. No support.

So white pair and silver pair have arrived. And once again i feel like the only person in the world who looks a prat in trainers. I'm size 5/6.

These trainers, and to be honest every trainer i've ever tried on, feel like they look like boats. I want to like them, they're so comfy. But i look down and i feel like i'm wearing barges.

The white ones look laughable and the heel slips off no matter how tight i do the laces, so i haven't even bothered with a pic of those.
The silver - if i lace them tightly they do stay on. But ... !!?

I don't know is it me? They fit, and they're comfy, but do they not look daft?

I'm feeling so deflated. Everyone else looks perfectly normal and nice in trainers 😳

(and sorry about bare feet pics it's to try and show what i'm seeing compared to my actual feet. if that makes sense)

Why not try some like this that are less bulky? Might not be classed as fashionable, but they're easy to wear (and to be honest, I would say the fitflop ones are more comfort than fashion).

They look absolutely fine, Op. You look exactly the same in them as everyone else wearing that style of trainers. And there are thousands upon thousands of women walking around every day, looking and feeling good in them.

timesogin · 05/05/2023 13:47

I had a phase of buying trainers online and they are all sitting in a barely worn pile in the bottom of the cupboard! I think you need to go and try some on. I also have narrow feet and just can't wear some brands - they don't look right and they aren't comfy.
Trying on a few in a row somewhere with a choice of brand might be really helpful?

I don't think those trainers look silly - but if they don't fit/feel right then you might need a different brand?

WellTidy · 05/05/2023 13:48

@anon2022anon do you have those Lacoste trainers? They’re perfect. I’m wondering how wide they come up. I have really wide feet and find that boys/men’s trainers, rather than girls/women’s, come up wider, and tbeeefore suit me better. I’m a size 4.

DappledThings · 05/05/2023 14:06

I don't get what you are seeing. They just look like normal shoes on normal feet. No idea what you think looks odd about them.

anon2022anon · 05/05/2023 14:08

@WellTidy I don't, sorry, but a colleague has them and I always think how neat they look, make her feet look tiny.

IJustHadToLookHavingReadTheBook · 05/05/2023 14:18

I feel the same. I have large feet and always feel I look a prat. But I've discovered Bonega Stan Smiths and think they look nice/minimise my big feet. Recommend.

Skybluepinky · 05/05/2023 14:32

Try normal trainers not ones that are neither shoes or trainers, my neighbour who is in her 80’s wears that style due to her swollen ankles.

CuteCillian · 05/05/2023 14:45

I have really similar looking FitFlops (in white) for summer dog walks on recommendation to help with heel pain. They are so comfy and I no longer have any discomfort.

TheFormidableMrsC · 05/05/2023 14:54

I think for exercise purposes you need a separate pair of proper cross trainers or running trainers. Even for just walking. You need proper support. I've got loads of "fashion" trainers though and I love silver ones although I wear Superga. I think they look nice although I prefer a lower cut trainer myself.

PurpleWisteria1 · 05/05/2023 15:10

They are not trainers? I would still say they are a tennis shoe/ plimsole type?
Trainers though will feel really weird and massive to begin with if you are used to a small light plimsole or similar.
But you will look the same as everyone else!

userxx · 05/05/2023 15:15

My size 7's can look flippin huge, I pick my trainers carefully.

Laiste · 05/05/2023 15:20

Those Lacoste ones - really nice. But would they be classed as having support/comfy to walk in? Or are they more a fashion trainer?

Being a thinish sole would they actually be any more supportive than plimsolls?

WithIcePlease · 05/05/2023 15:27

I have similar Lacoste trainers (basically a trainer for me to wear at work). I've just looked at mine and they have approx 3mm of foamy insole and then the rubber sole. There's no shaping inside.
I don't know if that helps
I have no foot problems but personally wouldn't wear for more than work and a whizz round a town centre. I wouldn't walk 5k in them

Laiste · 05/05/2023 15:27

It's really nice to hear from other posters who feel weird in trainers but do it anyway!

Thank you to everyone saying they look nice/normal Smile

I agree i've gone for an odd design and i'd be better trying on in a shop. I just thought because i've had this make in other types of shoe i'd keep it simple.

The bad news is, feeling buoyant about them i wore them out - hardly any walking - and they've rubbed my heels already Sad 😳

Is there a way to soften the backs i wonder?
I should have held fire and worn them around the house.

£90 wasted if i can't wear them Sad

@WithIcePlease thank you - that is helpful.

God i know nothing about this stuff!

I would have thought the fitflop slightly comfort over fashion would have been best, but they've hurt me! 🙄

Stupid tender feet.

I find Fitflops very supportive and I have the Rally ones in white and find them very comfortable for walking around town or travelling etc. They are not an exercise trainer though. If you are walking for exercise I think you need a proper trainer.

There is another thread about trainers - Adidas - and from looking at that I’m eyeing up a nice mint green pair.

HostessTrolley · 05/05/2023 15:45

I have very wide feet and bought these from adidas. They were comfy straight from the box, I can walk all day in them - well I could until my dog ate one yesterday 🙄

Adidas cloudfoam

uncomfortablydumb53 · 05/05/2023 15:49

Looking at your side view, I think they look good on your feet, but I can see a gap at the heel
Maybe you have narrow ankles?( as do I? I always test if I can put a finger in the gap, if so they will slip off as you walk
How do your toes feel? Is the toe box wide enough?
I'm not a shoe fitter btw but I do have CP and I've learned a lot over the yearsGrin
Adidas Superstars fit me perfectly and are very supportive
Gazelles gape at the heel
Any doubt and I'd return them

I think you're right i do have narrow (bony) ankles.

If i hadn't worn them out i would return them i think Sad

Narrow heels not ankles

Laiste · 05/05/2023 15:52

Those cloudfoam ones linked to above are nice.

OP posts:
uncomfortablydumb53 · 05/05/2023 15:53

Ahh that's a shame try a heel grip and/ or chiropody felt
I'm sure you could get them to fit better

Laiste · 05/05/2023 15:54

The superstars are nice looking. But are they quite high up the back of the heeL? Or are they just low under the ankle bone?

OP posts:
uncomfortablydumb53 · 05/05/2023 15:56

The cloud foam Adidas would be perfect I think
Can you see the padding " cups" the heel?
My superstars are the same
