Is 28 too old for very long hair?

I'm 28 and have hair that is past my waist, nearly tailbone length. I am worried it looks too 'young' or 'kiddy' and now that I'm nearly 30 I should maybe cut it shorter into something more sophisticated and grown up. I am quite petite and I worry I look too much like I'm hanging onto something I'm too old for.

I would love to know what anyone thinks. And also this is not me trying to humblebrag-I get it could read like that. I am asking here because I can't really get impartial advice from family/ my DH.

Bum length hair can look a bit ropey IMO, but it all depends on condition as everyone else has said. Very few people can have it this length without it starting to look thin and stringy, so taking it up a foot or so can really improve the condition without sacrificing the look and feel of long hair.

But I’ve had long hair most of my life - I think it suits me better than most other styles, and there’s definitely no time limit on it (in fact there’s someone I see around locally who has very long, thick, super glossy but completely silver grey hair and it’s absolutely beautiful - gives me such hair envy I almost pulled over the other day just to ask her about it!).

You can do whatever you want with your hair at any age, and 28 is no age at all! The most important thing is whether or not you like it.

My hair is almost as long as yours op and I'm 36. I love long hair and have never had short hair. I reckon most people are envious of your hair . If you go for regular trims and look after it I'm sure there is no reason not to keep it that way.

Everyone is being terribly polite, but if you're asking yourself the question, you're probably somewhat right. Balance that against how much you like and enjoy your hairstyle.

28 is no age, and of course not everyone needs to cut their hair as they age, but many do look better (self included) without super long hair after say 40. It's not much to do with the hair but to do with face shape and sagging.

I don't need to have short hair but it's better mid length now I'm over 40, otherwise the style drags my face down.

This doesn't happen to everyone though.

Thanks for everyone for replying! It's helped me have a new perspective.

I should say I fully support women of all ages wearing whatever they like- I love Linda Rodin, who is in her 70s and cooler than anyone I've ever met.

And the age thing is getting increasingly bonkers. I see women who are LITERALLY 20 talking about getting preventative Botox, or teenagers on TikTok telling 27 year olds 'Wow you look so young for your age!' as though they're surprisingly spry and active 104 year olds.

It's truly f*cking mental.

Think it depends on your looks and style

gogohmm · 04/05/2023 21:55

No such thing as too old but I would say with hair quality is important and very long hair can be in need of a cut (used to work for a hairdresser (accounts not cutting hair). As long as the ends aren't split go for it!

littleripper · 04/05/2023 22:01

my hair is waist length and I am 48! I cannot fathom your thinking 😂

chrystlha · 04/05/2023 22:16

While it might be a nice idea, you should maybe consider how easy it is to wash long hair while dealing with a zimmer frame.
(I can say that cos I'm twice your age).

52 here with waist length hair, no intention of ever having it cut Smile

Mate, I got my bum length hair cut when I was 52. It was nothing to do with age, I just couldn't be arsed with the faff of looking after it any more. I now have a no.2 round the back and sides and a curly bit on top.

The only thing that you should never wear at any age is the weight of other people's expectations.

Love this quote!

Washing long hair a couple of times a week and bunging it in a bun/plait is probably easier on the arthritic joints than washing and blow drying a short do daily 😉

I'm 38 and trying to grow mine to waist!
