Is 28 too old for very long hair?

I'm 28 and have hair that is past my waist, nearly tailbone length. I am worried it looks too 'young' or 'kiddy' and now that I'm nearly 30 I should maybe cut it shorter into something more sophisticated and grown up. I am quite petite and I worry I look too much like I'm hanging onto something I'm too old for.

I would love to know what anyone thinks. And also this is not me trying to humblebrag-I get it could read like that. I am asking here because I can't really get impartial advice from family/ my DH.

OP posts:

I had bum length hair that age and it looked bloody brilliant!!!!! was never shorter than shoulder blades thereafter. I look awful with short hair so will never have that out of choice

Proudofitbabe · 04/05/2023 18:59

Nothing looks too old at 28, but I think bum length hair always looks awful and flat to the head!

AgingIsAPrivilege · 04/05/2023 19:03

My Nan had wait length hair til she was into her 80s. She still kept it long til she died well in her 90s but it was maybe shoulder length, the long lengths were lost with age. So I'm also in the camp of your hair can be any length at any age.

That said, I just cut DD(14) hair from bum length to bra clasp length and it's transformed her. Her face is tiny & heart shaped and her hair, whilst absolutely beautiful, dominated her features before. She's never had so many compliments in her life & she loves how much easier it is to care for. So just a little food for thought there.

Beeswood · 04/05/2023 19:06

Keep your hiar long as long as you want to, forget about age.

I always had waist-length hair then eventually coudn't be bothered with it anymore, so had it cut to shoulder length.

DappledThings · 04/05/2023 19:10

Age is irrelevant, I think anything below waist level looks a bit weird. DD wants to grow hers to her knees, I'm hoping it stops naturally well before that.

hellocats · 04/05/2023 19:12

No!

But if you have long hair it should be properly maintained, bad ends look awful at any age but even worse when your hair thins.

Babysharkdoodoodood · 04/05/2023 19:14

I had bum length hair until 10 yrs ago (48) then had to have chemo. 😭

Honest to god, I coped with surgery etc , but the loss of my hair had me howling!

Now it's back to my shoulders, but with an undercut to ease the hot neck from flushes.

Giselletheunicorn · 04/05/2023 19:16

Condition matters more than length, I reckon.... Is it in good condition and do you have the time to spend on maintenance? If yes to both, then why care how long it is?

Outgrabe · 04/05/2023 19:17

Well, it’s not forbidden, strictly speaking, but don’t you find it gets tangled up in your Zimmer frame?

Honestly, OP.

DoTrollsShitInTheThreads · 04/05/2023 19:18

It's about condition and health of hair. Any sign of rats' tails or hair extensions is a no, but natural, long, shiny and healthy hair is gorgeous. At any age.

SecretsIWouldNeverTell · 04/05/2023 19:19

🙄

ferntwist · 04/05/2023 17:51

Can you post a pic OP? Sounds gorgeous tbh. I’m envious!

I have a feeling the OP will not be posting a photograph of her 'long hair' and her 'petite frame!' Wink

CentrifugalBumblePuppy · 04/05/2023 19:23

Long hair has no age limit! I’m 50, and have hair down to my coccyx. It’s been all the colours of the rainbow and I can’t wait for it all to be grey.

I can wear it up in a chignon for business or a messy bun for doing the housework, or I can go all out & let it flow in full bloom if I want too. Long hair is the best of both worlds for me!

BaggyJumpersandLeggings · 04/05/2023 19:23

Nooo don't be daft, I'm 32 I have long hair too, I have it shaped round my face but if I pull it round to the front it comes down past my breast and the back goes down to my waist, I always have. Couldn't imagine it being short tbf don't think it would suit me. Mad other pp say , there's no rules, if you like it and look after it then keep it long xx

Moversnotshakers · 04/05/2023 19:25

You are Definately not too old for lovely long hair. Im 56 and cut my long hair in january to a bob and hate it and been growing it back ever since. Im lucky my hair is strong and thick and its getting

long again and im.much happier .. keep it long. I think mine stems back to early 70's boy hair by my mothers home cuts!

BaggyJumpersandLeggings · 04/05/2023 19:25

🤣 I meant 'as other pp say' not mad 🫣
You're not mad guys! 😬😆

Berlinlover · 04/05/2023 19:27

I’m nearly 47 and my hair is half way down my back, I’ve no intention of cutting it. Your hair sounds gorgeous.

uglybettty · 04/05/2023 19:28

Yes of course. 28 is after all practically geriatric!

JaninaDuszejko · 04/05/2023 19:28

Ok, I'm going to answer your actual question. I'm guessing you suffer with people treating you as someone with less professional or life experience than you actually have? Unfortunately petite women do need to sometimes dress more grown up and formally to be taken seriously. So yes, get your hair cut into a style that suggests you can pay for your own haircuts.

This doesn't mean there is an age you should stop having long hair but making sure the ends are well maintained will make a difference to how you are perceived.

5128gap · 04/05/2023 19:30

With hair length your date of birth is the least important thing to consider. As in, irrelevant.
The things that I would consider are:
Is it nice hair? Unless it's a lovely colour, texture, shine or condition, more won't be better.
Does it actually enhance your appearance rather than just hanging there, or tied up or plaited?
How much is it part of your identity? Would you have to rethink your style without it?
Does it bring you enough benefit for the maintenance to be worth it?
Do you have an alternative style in mind that you're keen to try or you think would look better?
Above all, there's no rush. The people i know who've gone shorter from very long and not regretted it wanted to do it and dithered for ages until they were certain.

craftybeee · 04/05/2023 19:32

I've had hair down to my bum for the past 10 years, it's my comfort blanket, my identity and would never dream of cutting it. If I want to look more sophisticated I go for a slick back pony tail or bun.

When I was much younger I always had a 'bob' and I hated it, I sometimes have nightmares about going to the hairdressers....

wildfirewonder · 04/05/2023 19:33

FFS, 28 is not old.

If you like your hair very long, keep it.

ArcticBells · 04/05/2023 19:38

Nothing is ever too old if it suits you

user14728317878908 · 04/05/2023 19:46

I'm 30 and my hair is longer than yours. I actually try to keep it tailbone length but I've not had it cut in a while and it's now much longer than that.
I completely understand what you mean, about not being 'age appropriate'. I kept telling myself after I got married and had my long hair for my wedding pictures etc I would change to a more mature style...that didn't happen. Then I thought after I had a baby I would surely get it cut...that didn't happen either. At the moment I am too lazy to change it to anything that requires maintenance so looks like my long hair is here to stay for a while longer!

Cheesyfootballs01 · 04/05/2023 19:57

I’m 41 and my hair is down to my waist! I’m not cutting it 😎
