A scalp treatment shampoo that truly stops dandruff flaking?

Hdqn · 03/05/2023 08:07

DH has very short hair and a sore scalp, pale pink and flaky in places. We’ve tried so many shampoos but they do not stop flaked falling onto his shoulders and he is so self conscious at work. Has anyone got anything that really works? Head and Shoulders did a clinical ‘Scalp Relief’ one which was great but they have stopped selling it. Please help!

He needs another selenium shampoo. Try Selsun (it's available on Amazon, a small bottle is about £6 but lasts a long time).

Isheabastard · 03/05/2023 08:47

Have you tried Nizoral?

CalloohCallayFrabjousDay · 03/05/2023 08:50

Nizoral is good.

CosyCoffee · 03/05/2023 08:54

I use Head & Shoulders DermaXPro shampoo and conditioner and it's got rid of all my flaky bits. I had an awfully itchy scalp and this stops the itch completely, it's very soothing. Actually leaves my hair in good condition too!*

I have a similar sounding scalp. I have successfully used the ginger body shop shampoo for about 4 years now.

I feel for him, it’s very sore and horrible.

HadalyEve · 03/05/2023 08:59

He may have a scalp condition or infection that requires a prescription. I’d go to the GP and if the course of treatment they prescribe doesn’t work, push for a referral to a dermatologist.

Yes,it's really good as is The Body Shops ginger shampoo.

I really miss L'Oreal selenium shampoo 😢

Marmite27 · 03/05/2023 09:01

The only thing that works for me is head and shoulders. And only if I leave it on for a while like a conditioner, rather than rinsing straight off.

Nizoral is good.

Thank you - just looking now - the 2x week treatment or the daily shampoo?

He's coming to the end of this bottle as I had read all the great reviews on here Smile - sadly, not working!

Oh gosh I can't get him to the GP for really important stuff! I know what you mean though and if it were me, having struggled for this long - I'd be at the GP this afternoon! Grin

Neutrogena T gel

BearKey · 03/05/2023 09:04

I swear by T gel, I've been using it for years and it's the only thing that works for me. Strips dye out of your hair though, but I feel that it's worth it for a non flaky and non itchy scalp!

broadbeanquiche · 03/05/2023 09:05

Vichy Dercos

Allblackeverythingalways · 03/05/2023 09:05

Someone on here recommended Vichy Dercos anti dandruff when I was complaining that L'Oréal discontinued their selenium shampoo.
It's amazing! I'm flake free again!!
Boots and amazon have it

Myjobisanightmare · 03/05/2023 09:08

What about scalp oils pre shampoo for a few hours and Eucerin scalp lotion after shampoo it soothes scalp without making it greasy

TheYearOfSmallThings · 03/05/2023 09:12

I found the body shop ginger shampoo useless too. Selsun Blue works, but strips hair colour if you dye your hair. Nizoral works, but is unpleasant to use. Redken scalp relief dandruff shampoo works, but I notice they have changed the packaging - not sure if they have changed the formulation. Philip Kingsley Flakey/Itchy scalp shampoo works and is pleasant to use, but is very expensive. Vichy Dercos works quite well but has a funny smell.

If I didn't colour my hair I would go for Selsun Blue, it is very effective.

Yes that's how I found it. There was a shortage of selsun it seemed and someone recommended this. Its amazing. You have to use it for 4 weeks I think it says.

You can get great big refill pouches too
I going to throw the BIGGEST strop if they ever discontinue it 🤣

Softoprider · 03/05/2023 09:15

Have you thought the shampoo might be the problem? Try co-washing or just use conditioner for a while

Soozikinzii · 03/05/2023 09:23

My husband was prescribed nizoral by the Consultant dermatologist - it definitely works .

GatherlyGal · 03/05/2023 09:29

The problem is there are different kinds of dandruff which are caused by different things so if he won't go to the GP it's just trial and error.

I have a cupboard of almost full shampoo bottles!

The thing that works for me is tea tree. Either a tea tree shampoo (which I can't find any more) or tea tree oil massaged into scalp before washing.

Very true. My mum battled what she thought was dandruff for years, and only after finding a bald patch did she finally go to the GP. GP tried a couple things, then referred her to see a dermatologist and was biopsied & diagnosed with a type of scarring alopecia- Folliculitis Delcalvans. It took high potency steroids in a scalp solution for a month plus six month course of antibiotics to clear it up. And then every time the “itch” comes back she uses the steroid scalp solution for a few days.

DRS1970 · 03/05/2023 09:50

Selsun and Niazoral are both good. Especially when alternated with head and shoulders.
