How would you accessorise this dress for a party??

dreamingoaholiday · 27/04/2023 22:08

A reasonably posh do.

I'm clueless, I need help!

Also, do I really have to get my toes out?! I'd rather not. What other kind of shoes could I wear that would feel dressy?

They are definitely snowflakes. It's a winter dress. Very pretty so wear it anyway if you love it, but you may want something cooler if it's hot.

Definitely snowflakes.

KickAssAngel · 28/04/2023 22:53

I also think it looks like a winter dress. The stars/downloaded, fabric and color are all winter party dress. That's why it's so cheap.

What kind of event? You say work, but drinks, dinner, clients there?

I also see snowflakes. They seem to be six-pointed and most stars are five-pointed. It is a lovely dress though.

MrsSkylerWhite · 28/04/2023 23:15

I wouldn’t, less is more.

Nanaof1 · 28/04/2023 23:17

Oh, that is a very pretty black dress for someone with my body type. I am an "apple" figure, though I call it "applesauce" figure because everything has just kind of mushed up.......

Quitelikeacatslife · 28/04/2023 23:21

Does the dress look nice on you? If you feel ok in it then wear it for sure. It's not height of summer. I'm big lass too and just can't wear heels any more , I end up stomping round like a farmer and like you say, the men don't put up with that. Pointed toe low block heels are your friend here. Not everyone is going to do the glamour thing

Really love these

That's a really nice dress

TempletonTheRat · 28/04/2023 23:23

No offence OP but if you're attending a party with a bunch of women who look effortlessly stylish and are trying to emulate them, that dress has snowflakes on it. I think most people up close talking to you will be wondering why on Earth you've decided to wear. Christmas dress in spring.

The shoes you've chosen are also quite dated looking and yes - as you put it 'old lady' I would suggest going for a low block heeled open toe sandal with a dress like that

LizzieSiddal · 28/04/2023 23:00

Just put your size into John lewis website, there’s over 600 dresses Grin

https://www.johnlewis.com/browse/women/womens-dresses/size=24/_/N-flwZljsq

There are not 600 dresses that:

a. don't have a waist
b. aren't revealing beyond what I feel comfortable in, at a work do
c. suit my shape
d. I don't hate!

The number is pretty small.

Also... have you read the description of the dress from the website??

"DESCRIPTION
Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow...
Fit for all your upcoming winter festivities, Patrice is finished in a timelessly glamorous tea silhouette. Her relaxed bodice is designed with a flurry of embellished snowflakes, cinching in at the empire line and flowing into an A-line midi skirt that'll sparkle and shine next to the tree." ❄️🎄🎅🏼

I'm absolutely, 100% not trying to emulate them.

They're an arty bunch and there's a spirit of playfulness about the evening. I honestly don't think they'd be as shocked by snowflakes as you think they will!

I'm not wedded to the shoes at all. Someone suggested silver shoes and a particular shop and that's what came up.

It's not impossible to look nice in plus size but it does require a lot more planning, some other dress ideas
A high waistband can be really flattering if the dress flows out properly

Can you do 22? Scamp and dude are my go to for younger dresses that really do hang nicely . I feel brilliant in mine

No idea yet! It won't be here till Friday, it may go straight back! I have big boobs and it may well not fit.

I'm still looking for other things - not because I don't love the one above, but because the chance of the first one I try on suiting my shape is small.

Really what I need to do is to go and try on a bunch of dresses and see what suits, but I don't know anywhere I could go and do that anymore. Monsoon and Debenhams both shut in my town, the only shops we have now that stock my size now are Yours and the supermarkets.

I like those first shoes, thanks :)

The trouble is of course that the shops might carry the sizes on line but not in store. When I recently had a big event I ordered 2 from phase eight, one from John Lewis and one from scamp and dude , which I kept and absolutely love, because it feels fun and not old lady ish, and I don't have to wear it with horrible hold In underwear.
You have to outlay the money on credit card and be super ruthless yo take back the ones you don't want . I actually enjoyed trying the dresses on and picking them as I was relaxed at home.

Hmm, that first one could do, thanks! I did look at Scarlett and Jo and it didn't jump out at me! But it's nice and could suit.

The waist band looks like it's high enough that it's affectively an under-boob band, not am actual waist band!

Sadly I can't do 22 any more. Believe me, I've tried. No more Boden dresses for me 😓 (Couldn't care less if that's a MN cliche, I loved them!)

OP posts:
Quitelikeacatslife · 28/04/2023 23:49

I don't care about cliches, you wear what suits .
Most mn posters have no idea about plus size dilemmas My 2nd favourite dress I have is a Boden one.
Scarlet and Jo are very generous and are designed to fit comfortably, try a few from there maybe? They are reasonably priced too

dreamingoaholiday · 28/04/2023 23:50

I remember what gave me pause for thought about that one, now! Is it a bit wedding-y for a work do?

I'm curious now, what's your favourite one?!

I did love my Boden dresses!

I'll have another look at the Scarlett and Jo website - good to know they're well made.

Maybe in the floral but not in plain colour, bet your boobs would look good in it? Give you a boost? They have longer ones too?
Maybe this?

You need to try them on

Quitelikeacatslife · 28/04/2023 23:54

Scamp and dude is my fav

MrsRusselBrand · 28/04/2023 23:57

Hey ! I feel all your pain ! I'm roughly the same size are you and had a do recently and it wasn't black tie but cocktail. I wore this dress from next and wore some chunky chelsea boots (as I don't do heels ) and my leather biker jacket and I actually felt ok !! I was comfortable and think I managed to pull off the edgy but cool look ... I am not a fan of posh frocks and stilettos but this dress is so versatile
Hope you have a great night anyway Smile
