What's the typical "mom uniform" in your area?

Just what the title says, really. I'm interested to hear what it's like in other places.
I live in Tokyo and all the moms here seem to have the same style. You'd never see anyone wearing something tight or sexy (no cleavage at all times, nothing showing your waistline etc.), most of the outfits consist of a very loose-fitting dress/oversized jumper or shirt in neutral colors over baggy jeans. "Loose" and "neutral" are keywords here. Bonus points if you are wearing UV protection arm sleeves with your short-sleeved t-shirts. Nobody wears shorts or leggings - by themselves, I mean, laying under dress is OK - as that's embarrassing (actually nobody wears leggings unless they're going for a run, that's not just a "mom" thing. As for shorts, I was instructed by my midwife to steer clear of those as I'm a mom now! Anyway you're too old to wear shorts after 30 apparently, even if they are on the longish side). No sunglasses on anyone (I've seen some articles bashing moms wearing sunglasses like "who are they trying to impress?"). Flowery prints not recommended if over 30. Lots of branded bags, preferably something easily recognizable, are desirable.
This thread was inspired by some article I came across this morning with examples of shocking outfits that some readers saw other moms wear - well, not so shocking in my opinion to be honest. Out of place in some cases maybe, but I can't see why anyone couldn't wear a flowery dress or some bright clothes during the weekend or on holiday. That explains some strange looks from other moms at the nursery as I love wearing my flowery prints at the grand age of 32.😁
Anyway, I'm including here 2 pics of "recommended outfits" for moms and 2 pics of the "shocking outfits". Very interested to hear what's it like in other places!

Should have also mentioned that a respectful mom would never dye her hair a brighter colour than dark brown... 😁

I’m in the uk in a niceish city south of Birmingham - they all seem to wear active wear 😄 im still living in 2010 with my skinny jeans but running leggings and jumpers/coats and trainers - particularly in the afternoon

shivawn · 26/04/2023 09:07

I live in Ireland. There is no mum uniform. There's a big range of ages and backgrounds of mums, some are casual and some are dressed up. Really depends on the season too. For me (and most others I see), I dress the same way as I did before I became a mum.

JofraArchersFastestBall · 26/04/2023 09:08

That sounds very restrictive. Leggings, florals, bright colours and (in summer) shorts are all perfectly acceptable and unremarkable here in the West Midlands. There's lots of people in office wear, athleisure and the usual range of jeans and jumpers.

I've just done the school run in black barrel leg jeans, a t shirt from a club night I used to love in my youth and a fleece jacket. I was wondering if my 19yo self would have been pleased or horrified at how little my fashion sense has changed/progressed...

TokyoSushi · 26/04/2023 09:10

There is most definitely a Mum/school run uniform here, it's quite strict!

Sweatshirt, usually grey, something like Sweaty Betty, Barbour, maybe Nike. Leggings or skinny jeans. New balance 327, no socks. Knee length black puffer gilet. Hair in ponytail. Apple watch & iPhone, no bag.

bigbadbarry · 26/04/2023 09:11

I had my daughter in Tokyo (we moved back to the uk before she was nursery age so I didn’t have to deal with the school gates) and the rules for pregnancy were something else! I nodded and smiled and did my own thing mostly. Sympathies

Stormydanielss · 26/04/2023 09:12

I live in the NW in a town and I don't think there is a particular "uniform" I don't think I notice any one in similar outfits, there's lots of different styles going on. Or maybe I don't pay attention 🫣

BelindaBears · 26/04/2023 09:40

It’s a real mixed bag at ours, because there’s a big mix of mums, dads, grandparents, childminders, people on their way to work, SAHMs wrangling preschoolers, SAHMs going off to the gym afterwards, people who drive in, people who walk in, people who cycle in. Too varied for a uniform, thank fuck as I’d undoubtedly get it wrong.

icanneverthinkofnc · 26/04/2023 09:40

Round here. There seem to be two types
1)Boden style, flat shoes, hair messily tied up, picking up Jocasta from nursery
2) Waynetta Slob - leggings with hole in arse or leg, grubby, baby sicked TShirt, trainers yelling 'Jaydee, get here, you little shit!'
😂

I make an effort to NOT conform to any of this!

Campervangirl · 26/04/2023 09:48

Primark PJ's with a coat over the top of you're lucky, if not a dressing gown (I'm not even joking)

35965a · 26/04/2023 09:50

It’s so varied. Some in activewear with their leggings so far up their arse cheeks it makes me cringe, some in jeans and jumper/t-shirt, some in work clothing, some in dresses.

LapinR0se · 26/04/2023 09:50

I’m in Geneva Now it is

  • mom jeans
  • cashmere jumper
  • golden goose trainers
  • enormous sunglasses
  • dog
MissHavishamsMouldyOldCake · 26/04/2023 09:52

Would absolutely love to visit Japan but the societal expectations to conform for people living there sound so stifling.

MiddleParking · 26/04/2023 09:54

Anything goes round here but I do see a LOT of people in Adanola sweatshirts and socks at the moment. New Balance also v v popular (including with me). I actually think there’s way more of a dad uniform amongst the men I know.

Arewehumanorarewecupboards · 26/04/2023 09:54

It’s mostly wellies and wax jackets here.

Blondey2023 · 26/04/2023 09:55

Skinny jeans, sometimes those hideous 'mom jeans', long coats or cardigans with flats. Pony tails. Sunglasses.

Reluctantadult · 26/04/2023 09:55

Legging, lots of skinny jeans still about too.

Joules striped tops.
White trainers.

Blueberrycreampie · 26/04/2023 09:56

@toucaninjapan can I ask if you are Japanese or just living there? Either way, thanks for the insight into a bit of the culture. I'm not a mum but would like to visit Japan one day!

Briallen · 26/04/2023 09:58

Mostly leggings and long puffer coat/gilet to knee here. White trainers with white socks over leggings.

Belltentdreamer · 26/04/2023 10:02

Two main types types here:

  1. arty creative vibe - lots of Lucy and Yak dungarees / Mom jeans with cashmere/ fair isle jumpers / Veja trainers or Blundstone boots, Patagonia etc. normally working in London or Oxford
  2. More country vibe - lots of Joules dresses, Barbour waxed jackets , Hunter wellies or Chelsea boots. Bonus points if you arrive in a Land Rover or Range at the bare minimum a Volvo 4WD or any large SUV
Mummynew08 · 26/04/2023 10:02

This is why I'm glad I live in South London- women here wear whatever they like (as far as I can see) and it's really varied. The ages of the mums vary quite widely too which helps explain the lack of uniform. Eg at dd's nursery, the mums range from 20s to 40s.

I do wear skinny jeans, flats, messy ponytail for drop off on my wfh day (as a pp described) but only cos it's the most comfortable for me. I also wear a baggy jumper, with no bra or makeup, so I don't think I look very sloany! But I've never seen two mums dressed alike at drop off. Some of them look really smart on the way to work.

toucaninjapan · 26/04/2023 10:03

Thanks everyone for the replies!

@Blueberrycreampie I'm actually white, working in Japanese corporate world (a whole topic in itself lol). Japan is a very beautiful and safe country, but it's not for everyone. My character fits Japanese mentality in -some- ways and I speak the language, so I'd say I'm quite integrated, but some things are still very strange to me 😁

FusRoDah · 26/04/2023 10:04

Of those who are not obviously in their work outfits, there are 2 main types:

Activewear with (bright) leggings right up the bum cheeks as pp mentioned. Various brands of trainers, short puffer coat.

or

Dungarees, cardigan, flowery headband

3luckystars · 26/04/2023 10:06

I’m in Ireland and anything goes, there is a huge mix of everything and people look different on different days too. All fit in.

I’m really interested in these UV sleeves you are talking about, they sound cool. Could you post a photo if you can find one?
