What's the typical "mom uniform" in your area?

Just what the title says, really. I'm interested to hear what it's like in other places.
I live in Tokyo and all the moms here seem to have the same style. You'd never see anyone wearing something tight or sexy (no cleavage at all times, nothing showing your waistline etc.), most of the outfits consist of a very loose-fitting dress/oversized jumper or shirt in neutral colors over baggy jeans. "Loose" and "neutral" are keywords here. Bonus points if you are wearing UV protection arm sleeves with your short-sleeved t-shirts. Nobody wears shorts or leggings - by themselves, I mean, laying under dress is OK - as that's embarrassing (actually nobody wears leggings unless they're going for a run, that's not just a "mom" thing. As for shorts, I was instructed by my midwife to steer clear of those as I'm a mom now! Anyway you're too old to wear shorts after 30 apparently, even if they are on the longish side). No sunglasses on anyone (I've seen some articles bashing moms wearing sunglasses like "who are they trying to impress?"). Flowery prints not recommended if over 30. Lots of branded bags, preferably something easily recognizable, are desirable.
This thread was inspired by some article I came across this morning with examples of shocking outfits that some readers saw other moms wear - well, not so shocking in my opinion to be honest. Out of place in some cases maybe, but I can't see why anyone couldn't wear a flowery dress or some bright clothes during the weekend or on holiday. That explains some strange looks from other moms at the nursery as I love wearing my flowery prints at the grand age of 32.😁
Anyway, I'm including here 2 pics of "recommended outfits" for moms and 2 pics of the "shocking outfits". Very interested to hear what's it like in other places!

Ireland here, never really pay attention but I do not think any one type stands out. Fairly diverse. For example myself and a couple of friends nearby would be dressed in active wear on a day off work like today when we are meeting for yoga and brunch but the rest of the week is smart casual as we are in the office. I do not notice other mums on the school run as I drive and drop them at the gates and have been doing for many years now so cannot even remember what the other mothers looked like when the kids were in primary school tbh.

Heatherbell1978 · 28/04/2023 06:41

In Scotland and I'd say fairly varied now but in winter everyone (including myself) was wearing a long lined puffer coat, leggings, trainers, backpack.

Black or blonde hair. Occasionally pastel pink or blue. Orange tan. Thick eyelashes. Duvet coat , leggings, trainers. Vape.

@Squidlette Sounds like southend 😂

Would 1000000% rather go out for a pint with these mums than anyone in a Boden floral dress though

UPF sleeves are so you can wear the clothes you want (ex. a short sleeve dress to work) but have quick and instant protection outside. Just slip them on and off. The Japanese ones look dreadful though. Aussies make skin-tight, discreet nude-coloured sleeves.

I was thinking of starting a thread on this subject! Because I’ve moved from South London to the South Manchester area and I’ve noticed a mum uniform here that London didn’t have. It’s as several others have described:

Long puffa/quilted coat
Trainers (platform or New Balance)
Woolly hat (beanie or bobble)

Not sure what’s under the coat yet. The Spring weather will reveal all.

I’m now consciously trying not to adopt the look, but suspect I’ll succumb in time.

I've moved from west London to south Manchester and it's exactly what you described.

Can't wait to see the summer wear and how it differs BlushGrin

Jinxjacobs · 28/04/2023 19:03

Yay the thread is still going!

My area has the leggings and white sports socks look, lots of puffer gilets.

Moving into big shirts, khaki jackets replacing the puffers and waterproofs now we're apparently in spring (some days anyway)

There are quite a few younger mums hanging onto their sliders and the fanned out topknot (never my thing but I'm well old compared to some of them).

Mistymoonsinastarrysky · 28/04/2023 19:54

Wiltshire village here and basically anything goes. Plenty of muddy wellies, jeans, leggings, trainers. Little or no high fashion or posh labels.
When mine were young I was always in riding gear or jeans and wellies, occasionally pyjamas under a long raincoat if too rushed for some reason (and I didn’t get out of the car)

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 28/04/2023 20:02

Leggings
Big chunky training shoes (no idea of brand) or
Flip flops/sliders
Long gilets or padded down filled full length coats

Sometimes the flipflops and the long down coat , their feet must be freezing

Essex

Primark PJ's with a coat over the top of you're lucky, if not a dressing gown (I'm not even joking)

Sounds like our children must go to the same school 😂

ilovesushi · 28/04/2023 21:25

I love the Japanese mum style - but I would have to add sunglasses. My DC are in secondary now so haven't a clue what other mums wear. I tend to style check other dog walkers and I get a lot of boot envy.

StarDolphins · 28/04/2023 21:30

70% look like they’re going to the gym
30% look like they’re from Love Island

Then there’s me that looks like a knackered, drunk scarecrow!

SootspriteSearcher · 28/04/2023 22:27

Round here lots of leggings, oversized tops and those dry robe coats. Dad's - mostly tracksuits and expensive trainers.

Interesting reading the reactions of the other mum to you picking up your ds from nursery in leggings. I work in a nursery and we all wear leggings and tshirts! The brighter the better! Today my leggings were rainbow striped with pick & mix sweets all over them!

I would love to visit Japan one day, might have to tone down my wardrobe as it's very bright! I dont own anything plain 🤣

TokyoSushi · 28/04/2023 22:30

I've just order an Adanola sweatshirt thanks to this thread! Yesterday I'd never heard of them, today I've seen about 10 on the school run! (I do actually really like them!)

Hey from another Dundonian!

Waves from another Dundee mumsnetter!

I hardly notice what the other mums are wearing (i only do school run once a week). I know one mum always wears sports stuff but couldn’t tell you the brand. A lot of mums in hijab at my sons school: usually beautiful colours but I’ve no idea of brands.

i grab the first thing I can find that isn’t pjs: I work from home on the day that I do pick up.

@BigFatMummyOnTheCeiling I'm surprised how many people have mentioned Joules here. I remember reading one of the Joules threads lately and everybody was saying that they hardly see anybody wearing it these days, but looks like it's still going strong. Btw love your usernameGrin

@Furries I think there was a “I live in Japan AMA” thread actually, and everything there was very much on point. OP was an English teacher I think (sorry if I'm mistaken). I do have lots of funny stories about working/ doing job interviews here though so I might do a corporate life version of that AMA thread one day. Smile

Please do an “I live in Japan” ama

mdinbc · 28/04/2023 22:43

I'm older, but will report on mum's I know; West Coast Canada, small town.

black leggings/ripped skinnys
oversize sweatshirt
black adidas or vans
blundstone in winter/birks in spring/summer
shackets are still going strong
any variation of waterproof jacket, lululemon or helly hansen

messy bun or ponytail, driving a jeep cherokee or toyota rav4, holding yeti mug

rockpoolingtogether · 28/04/2023 23:47

bigbadbarry · 26/04/2023 09:11

I had my daughter in Tokyo (we moved back to the uk before she was nursery age so I didn’t have to deal with the school gates) and the rules for pregnancy were something else! I nodded and smiled and did my own thing mostly. Sympathies

Ooh sounds interesting. Tell more!

Middle-class Toronto: Black leggings, canvas slip-on flats, oversized blue collared shirt with sleeves rolled up, pony tail, light eye make up.

Not joking: 3 of my neighbours and I ran into each other walking our babies last summer and we were all dressed EXACTLY like that. We had a good laugh.

I am really enjoying this thread, thank you.

The Toronto mum look is definitely one I would like to try out when it is warmer here in SE England. It would be a refreshing update from my usual jeans & old jumper (although I did recently purchase a knee length puffa gilet - my arms got soaked when i got caught out in the rain without a brolly lol).

I am also now wanting to buy a yeti mug!

Someone needs to do a Instagram reel / dare I say TikTok to showcase all the uniforms. Post the link if this exists.

This is one of those threads that pretend to be about clothes when they are really concerned with insecurity, social status and money. Or else it wouldnt have reached over 3 pages long.

I always say, if you have to shout about it to internet strangers, you ain't got it! Grin

I never understand the need to dress the same as someone else.

Who decides what's popular? Someone has to be the first to wear it.

NotMeSecretFormular · 29/04/2023 02:57

Oh, they'd hate me. I’m often mistaken for a teenager because I’m short and baby faced. But I do dress like a teenager. Lots of black make up, long lacy skirts or tiny mini skirts and platform boots. Flared pants and the odd low cut top (big of boob). I'd hate to have to restrict myself like that. I just wouldn't. Comfy but different. It's just how I look every day,

mackthepony · 29/04/2023 03:09

Here it's a lot of those sporty type sandals and leggings, little backpack as if they're going hiking.

Standard issue floor length sleeping bag coat in winter. With a bobble hat.

Occasionally see shorts in the summer time. Hair is usually natural. Most people are slim

Borracha · 29/04/2023 05:13

I’m in Dubai and my kids go to school in a verrrry western/British expat heavy area.

School run uniform here seems to be Hermes Oran sandals/Birkenstocks, linen shorts and top co-ord, Louis Vuitton Neverfull bag, subtle Rolex, less subtle engagement and wedding ring, Celine sunglasses. Yo-yo pram and white Range Rover optional 😀

PinkButtercups · 29/04/2023 05:55

TokyoSushi · 26/04/2023 09:10

There is most definitely a Mum/school run uniform here, it's quite strict!

Sweatshirt, usually grey, something like Sweaty Betty, Barbour, maybe Nike. Leggings or skinny jeans. New balance 327, no socks. Knee length black puffer gilet. Hair in ponytail. Apple watch & iPhone, no bag.

This! But ours wear socks over their leggings.

PinkButtercups · 29/04/2023 05:56

Oh and those ugg type slip on shoes. Look a bit like clogs.
