Do any of you create your own work uniform?

I’ve spent the last 12 years wearing uniforms for various jobs and loved it. I’d line up the uniforms on coat hangers and add underwear/an extra layer/whatever and pick up one coat hanger every morning.

Now I’m in an office job with a few trips out of the office per week. I don’t need to be overly smart, merely casual-presentable. I was thinking to just buy two or three identical skirts and five identical tops and one or two cardigans. I also quite like the distinction between work clothes and non work clothes.

Does anyone else do this? Do you get bored? Is it in fact the perfect solution?

I've never done it so exactly as you have done, but yes i used to have a work uniform of cord trousers, button up tops a think merino or cotton jumper and loafers or brogues. I used to have to get up early and i liked the comfort of knowing i was presentable and comfortable.

ChangedForEmbarrassingQuestions · 22/04/2023 15:49

I’ve not actually done it, I’m just thinking of it.

I do this. I have 3x black jeans and 7x black tops that I only wear for work along with a choice of 3 pairs of 'work shoes' (black Cons, black biker boots, black brogues). I wear something from that selection every day, unless there is a meeting which needs something more formal, in which case I stick on a black tube midi.

ChangedForEmbarrassingQuestions · 22/04/2023 19:38

@MyBloodyMaryneedsmoreTabasco yes this is the kind of thing I was thinking, perhaps some slight variation for seasons but yours sounds good.

I'm only in the office one day a week but I have a uniform based around a couple of stretchy jersey pencil skirts. In winter I wear tights and jumpers with it (there are two I rotate). In summer, bare legs and a t shirt. Spring/autumn tights and a cardigan over the t shirts. It's made my Monday morning so easy! If i had to do more days in the office now I'd buy a few extra tops and keep that "uniform".

doingmyboxin · 22/04/2023 19:47

For the last little while, yes. Have three different styles of dress, 2 different colours of each, and I just rotate them. I do like you do, hang them up each night with tights, undies, and vest top if cold.

Have absolutely no idea what I'll be wearing when it gets warmer though.

MargotEdithAgnes · 22/04/2023 20:19

I love this idea too! I have never actually done it, but have considered it. Let us know how you get on if you do it please 😄

If I was doing it now, I'd probably do bootcut trousers and a boat neck, relaxed fit top and unstructured blazer and loafers. But the seasons would be my problem, as I have to go outdoors quite a lot and my job is fairly physical, so being too hot would be crap and being too cold would be equally crap! So being able to pick what to wear for the weather is important

Kyse · 22/04/2023 20:21

Yep. I have (all the same style, just different colours)

Blouse - grey, burgundy, dark green
Top - black and green pattern, grey and black pattern, navy stripe
Skirt - black, navy, (very subtle!) grey leopard print
Blazer - black
Cardigan - black, navy, dark grey and pale grey
Nude and black tights
Black heels/grey heels, black loafers, black ankle boots
Black bag, grey bag

Then a few dresses which all go with either the blazer or the cardigans

Kyse · 22/04/2023 20:21

Oh and black wide leg and black skinny trousers

VivX · 22/04/2023 20:27

Yes, when I worked in an office 5 days per week, I had 3 identical pairs of black trousers plus 5 shirts and a couple of jackets and black boots and shoes. I just rotated through them every week.

I didn't go as far as preselecting them each night but it didn't take long to decide what to wear in the morning.

Now that I'm not in an office every day, I follow a similar logic but I don't need quite as many clothes to rotate through.

Dingus · 22/04/2023 20:43

I've pretty much done this since the pandemic.

I really like it, and it saves making any decisions in the morning.

I hope my colleagues know that I have lots of the same item 😄.

GarlicGrace · 22/04/2023 20:45

Yes, I always did this. The women I've worked with did, too. I think "work clothes" are just as much a thing for women as for men, it's a bit less obvious because we have more choice of shapes & colours.

Magazine articles used to suggest having 6 or 7 outfits on rotation so you don't end up with a Monday outfit, Tuesday outfit, etc Grin Mine usually looked something like 3 pairs of black trousers, 1 black skirt, 6 different colours of stretchy top and a black blazer.

Now I'm not working I wear black leggings with different tops - the only thing that's changed is the amount of Lycra!

Cherryana · 22/04/2023 21:03

Yes I have different clothes that are just for work. They are more or less variations on the same jersey dress from Tesco. It is the perfect style, length and doesn’t need ironing. I do have some other dresses too but they are sort of variations on the same theme. It makes getting dressed very simple.

itsgettingweird · 22/04/2023 21:05

I do - sort of!

I have the m and s jeggings in various colours. A few t shirts all the same (various plain colours) from matalan and then just wear jumper or cardigan dependent on weather.

Team with either boots, loafers or pumps.

It is easier!

This is genius!

gogohmm · 22/04/2023 22:14

Sort of - I have half a dozen seasalt type dresses (one is white stuff, one M&S, one face face I think) which I wear with tights and a cardigan then winter leather shoes or no tights and sandals in summer. Plus I have black trousers, couple of skirts and a few blouses. In very warm weather I do wear my normal summer dresses too

StrawHatOnTheParcelShelf · 23/04/2023 01:00

Not a uniform as such but I do have a very simple approach that gives me some variety without having to think very hard.

  1. Uniqlo stretch tapered pants (I have a few now)
  2. Any top out of my wardrobe - I tend to pick one that hasn't had much wear lately
  3. Leather trainers (white, black or blush)
sashh · 23/04/2023 02:23

I did this with my PGCE, black linen trousers and 6 shirts that were in different colours but the same style.

On one of the days I was in uni another students said she wished she had a uniform and when I said I'd made my own was, "Why didn't I think of that?"

One school I had to wear a jacket while on the corridors.

I did occasionally wear other things but 90% of the time that was my uniform.

SpringNTing · 23/04/2023 08:55

I do this! Including the hanger with my undies & tights etc 😆

I rotate blazers, silk blouses and 7/8 trousers with loafers or pointy flats in Spring/Autumn. I have some nice high necked pencil dresses I rotate with black tights and ankle boots in winter. Summer is usually dresses and wedge sandals.

I get a whole week ready on a Sunday night if I’m in organised mode, otherwise I just put the outfit together the night before.

pictoosh · 23/04/2023 09:07

Yes indeed. I'm a Child Development Officer in a school for children with complex additional support needs. My clothes need to be comfortable, practical and hard wearing.
I have three pairs of cropped wide cords (different colours) and two pairs of similar dungarees. I have three striped long sleeved tees and three checked flannel shirts. One pair of cherry red doc boots. These are all worn in combination mon-fri. I wear something completely different at the weekend.

MargotEdithAgnes · 23/04/2023 09:29

I love the sound of your work uniform @pictoosh

pictoosh · 23/04/2023 10:46

Thanks. x

Auldspinster · 23/04/2023 10:51

Yes. Judicial support staff so a few black dresses and pairs of black trousers and nice tops. Takes all the thought out of getting dressed in the morning.

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 23/04/2023 11:01

I've got a few dresses I rotate.

whiteroseredrose · 23/04/2023 11:19

I did exactly that. I really miss my uniforms.

We are casual so I have 3 pairs of jeans, six stripy tops and 3 cardigans all in similar colours. I just grab the top of the pile.
