What to wear to evening wedding in field?

So, the wedding is based in a field, with marquee, fish and chip vans etc- think festival vibe. I'm there from 6:30pm - late, so thinking a dress/heels etc may not be the best. I want to be smart-ish so my camping sweatshirt and joggers may not cut it!

@Soontobe60 I like those, but I fear they might be too long. I'm only 5ft 2 and feel a bit drowned in longer dresses, but think I might have to go a bit longer if I want to do the old leggings trick for later on. The point about 3/4 length in case of mud is good too.

@CapaciousHag that is a lovely dress and very different, but I will need to wear a bra otherwise lives may be lost.

I had considered a jumpsuit but yes, the loos may be tricky for that.

I love greens and blue.

Biker boots with a beautiful long flowing floral dress and a fresh flower band round your head (ask your local florist)

Something like this is quite Boho - Joe Browns have quite a few dresses along these lines if it’s your sort of thing:

I know people have different tastes, but I cannot see a single celebratory element to that Joe Browns dress. Neither the fabric nor the design / colour / cut are attempting to be in any way special - which is what dressing up means to me. Would you really wear it to an evening wedding reception?

Slight danger of ‘comedy fortune teller’ vibe, @anunlikelyseahorse?

True! Plus, she doesn't want to wear a long dress.

Maireas · 22/04/2023 17:50

It'll be damp if not muddy, so wellies are a good call. Would you wear a trouser suit?. You could get a nice bright colour and layer it when it gets cool in the evening.

NetZeroZealot · 22/04/2023 17:51

Wedges.

Layers.

RampantIvy · 22/04/2023 17:55

Would you really wear it to an evening wedding reception?

Yes, because it is in a field, not a swanky hotel. It is a beautiful dress and completely epitomises the wedding in a field vibe to me.

Kiwisarenotjustfruit · 22/04/2023 18:01

Maxi dress, so you can add thermal legging/joggers later, and a proper warm cardigan or jumper, with maybe a shirt (denim? Tartan? You can use as an in between layer if the jumper is itchy. Either cowboy/biker boots with the outfit from the start or add wellies in the evening.
And yes, by the end you will look like the last day at glastonbury but so will everyone else. Or they’ll all leave early because they’re too cold.
Bring your favourite woolly hat too. Makes a massive difference to heat retention.

Slight danger of looking like a jobby?

TruthRevolution · 23/04/2023 16:07

Do you have any footwear that would work OP?

If you do it might be easier to start from there and base the outfit round about them

faffadoodledo · 23/04/2023 16:46

@MirandaPr1estly I love that Warehouse dress! I'm looking for something g to wear for Chelsea and think you have found it for me!

Daffodilwoman · 23/04/2023 16:51

I’d wear comfortable boots and a midi or long dress, though not too long that it hits the floor. I’d wear a warm shawl too and take gloves but then again I can’t stand being cold. Maybe leather gloves to match a colour in the dress. Probably a hat too to dress up the outfit and keep you warm. Match a clutch bag to the colour of the gloves and hat if you can.

Thermals. We went to a teepee wedding in July one year...fine in the day but was flipping freezing when the sun went down. If there's any doubt on the weather I'd look for a jumpsuit or something you can hide thermals under!

CinnamonJellyBeans · 22/04/2023 09:23

insect repellent.

and wellies.

wonkylegs · 23/04/2023 18:06

My brothers wedding was in a field last summer but ceremony was in a church so a degree of formality was needed.
Most of the women wore summer dresses or floaty jumpsuits with sandals either wedge heel or flat (or had heeled shoes for the church & then sandals / flip flops for the field. Weather was good & very dry so didn't need a wet option.

Most of us had a jacket or wrap for later in the evening when it got cooler.

Bride changed into a jumpsuit for the evening dancing.

Jeannie88 · 23/04/2023 18:13

Oh love this, a nice dress and some form of boots/trainers. We do tend to worry too much about these things and once we get there and see what other people wearing, ie allsorts, we wonder why we did lol. Also couple of drinks in you won't care anyway. Have fun! X

A swing dress, paired with low wedges or fancy trainers, or fancy DMs if that's your style

Biker jacket to keep you warm.

I love their emerald satin jacquard dress!

What a great site. Thanks for the heads-up.

MissLucyEyelesbarrow · 23/04/2023 19:52

I would wear a fit and flare dress, as you say that's the style that suits you, OP, with sandals during the day if dry/boots if not. I would take leggings to put on underneath once it gets colder (I wouldn't worry about the 2005 vibes, as no one will care once you're a few glasses of wine in). Loads of layers - gilet to go under jacket.
