£300 for a whole outfit isn't excessive? Is it?

Off out on a very rare day in London tomorrow. It's an all day affair, booze brunch and a show in the evening.

£300 is not bad for an entire outfit is it? Jacket. T Shirt, Jeans, Trainers and a bag.

I came away feeling I'd been quite thrifty but some people have implied otherwise! I do like a spend but literally for all that I'm quite chuffed.

It's definitely not thrifty, but if money isn't a concern then it doesn't really matter.

Niftythrifter · 21/04/2023 19:40

Will you wear the items over a long period of time? Of the answers yes then I’d say it’s not too bad at all!

Willywanderer · 21/04/2023 19:42

It's not thrifty (that would be maybe one cheap thing) but to buy all that for £300 sounds like you got some cheap bits

Iwantmyoldnameback · 21/04/2023 19:43

None of these are things you can't wear again, I think it's fine, not that it's anyone else's business anyway.

BCBird · 21/04/2023 19:43

It depends on your income. You have bought the things as I presume you liked them.and could afford them. Enjoy them and your day in London.

zurala · 21/04/2023 19:46

It sounds a lot to me for just basic items, and especially to buy an outfit just to go for a day out because I'd just wear things I already own. Adding up in my head what I would spend on those items was around £150 so £300 does sound a lot to me.

TomatoSandwiches · 21/04/2023 19:47

Sounds completely reasonable to me.

pickledandpuzzled · 21/04/2023 19:50

I hardly ever buy clothes for a specific occasion- last time was a wedding after I'd lost a lot of weight so had nothing remotely suitable.

Generally I keep a selection of clothes that cover all bar unusual situations, rather than buying especially.

Are you saying you bought a whole outfit, top to bottom, and accessories, for a day out?

Plaidparty · 21/04/2023 19:50

Doesn’t seem too much to me - good quality bags these days cost at least that!

MiniEggsAllYear · 21/04/2023 19:57

I'd probably spend a fair bit on trainers, bag, jacket and jeans but probably not all in one go. So yeah it's not bad really if you're buying them all in one go but then planning to wear them a fair bit after this one day out.

AppleKatie · 21/04/2023 19:59

did you buy a whole outfit from scratch for one day out in London?

OldKingCole · 21/04/2023 20:00

Sounds good to me!

Teachingteacher · 21/04/2023 20:03

I would never personally spend that much on clothes, but I spend my money on other things, so to each their own. In my circle, a bargain for clothes would be in the 30-40€ range for a nice piece.

BendingSpoons · 21/04/2023 20:05

It sounds a reasonable (but not thrifty!) amount for all those bits but I would rarely buy a whole outfit.

JackGrealishsLegs · 21/04/2023 20:08

It’s on average £60 per item so not bad at all as long as you’ll wear the things again lots. Sounds like you will though! Have fun!

defi · 21/04/2023 20:11

Depends on your income/budget

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 21/04/2023 20:51

I wouldn’t go out and buy “an outfit” in one go, but if I take what I was wearing today (now in pjs!) and think about each item I’m sure it would have been around £300, although I do get NUS discount and buy a lot on Depop.

Tinytigertail · 21/04/2023 20:58

That sounds like lot of outfit for £300. Enjoy your day out!

Lamelie · 21/04/2023 21:03

Lots of money but also lots of items. Where did you go?

RobertaTheRotund · 21/04/2023 21:05

It's thrifty to get a whole outfit including bag and shoes for that. But, it isn't especially thrifty to buy an entire new outfit for a day out maybe. I'm sure you'll wear it again though so tell the jidgy people to keep their beaks out

RobertaTheRotund · 21/04/2023 21:05

OldHouseLover · 21/04/2023 21:09

I understand OP. I love using an occasional (however tenuous) to buy a new outfit or things to add to existing wardrobe to make an outfit & once I've worn it for the day out / event it becomes part of my day to day wardrobe

I rarely buy things just randomly, its 99% for a day out / lunch / dinner/ trip.

I buy to the higher end of my budget & wear things for years so get great value but spend more per item than what you've listed.

Bags are investment pieces & I don't buy them too often

Hope you had a great day

Biscuit
Purplecatshopaholic · 21/04/2023 21:23

That’s a lot of pieces for that price so not unreasonable at all

DeadbeatYoda · 21/04/2023 21:27

That depends on your perspective. For lots of people that I a huge amount of money, for others very little.
