£300 for a whole outfit isn't excessive? Is it?

Off out on a very rare day in London tomorrow. It's an all day affair, booze brunch and a show in the evening.

£300 is not bad for an entire outfit is it? Jacket. T Shirt, Jeans, Trainers and a bag.

I came away feeling I'd been quite thrifty but some people have implied otherwise! I do like a spend but literally for all that I'm quite chuffed.

It depends how much of an issue money is.

OneRingToRuleThemAll · 21/04/2023 21:30

I'll make you feel better and tell you I bought a backpack recently and that alone was £325.

It's all a bit Vimes boots theory.

Yes it was a lot of money but quality is expensive.

multivac · 21/04/2023 21:35

I mean, I wouldn't spend that much on clothes in a year. But that's not about being 'thrifty'; just resources and priorities!

BigMacExtraPickles · 21/04/2023 23:38

So the jacket, tshirt and jeans were all from whistles. Bag was Oliver Bonas. Trainers were £60 - a bargain from sports direct, £15 cheaper than Schuh! (told you I was thrifty 🤪)

They are all items I will wear again, decent investment pieces.

Whistles also had 15% off so was very happy all in all.

did you buy a whole outfit from scratch for one day out in London?

Yeah! I love a new outfit to go out in! Like I said it's quite rare for me to do this kinda stuff (actually staying overnight) so nice to feel a bit spesh 🤩

That all looks lovely together. I’ve been eying up that bag this week but not committed yet.

nzeire · 22/04/2023 01:22

All classic and gorgeous pieces! Awesomeness!!!!

that bag!

BusterGonad · 22/04/2023 04:02

That's a lovely outfit, the trainers are not my thing but I can appreciate that they are nice. I love the little jacket and bag. I think you did well to get all of that for £300.

GarlicGrace · 22/04/2023 04:15

YABU for buying Nike trainers. I'm a tragic cheapskate, and even I think you did pretty well for £300 😃 Have a great day, and enjoy all the future wears you'll get with these items!

SkyandSurf · 22/04/2023 04:33

You'll wear all those again.

I wouldn't have thought to buy a new outfit head to toe though- that's an approach I don't come across much!

greyhairnomore · 22/04/2023 04:35

Completely depends how much you earn or have spare.

Marchintospring · 22/04/2023 05:19

I think it’s a lot.
There’s so much stuff out there now I think you could get decent quality basics (which is what you bought) for way less. A label doesn’t make anything better quality or not. I guess you got some of it at a reduced price so that’s better.
Have a great day in London regardless . Enjoy wearing your new outfit.

AppleKatie · 22/04/2023 07:12

I do think buying an outfit from scratch for a day out is an unusual approach and makes that day out hugely expensive (and I don’t think that opinion warrants the biscuit someone gave me upthread 😂).

that said I suppose what matters is how it fits into your overall budget for the month/ year. Can you afford it comfortably?

I would only aim to buy a max of 1 pairs of trainers for a year but I also like a day out in my local big city at least once a month 🤷‍♀️ I guess it’s about where your priorities lie.

GiltEdges · 22/04/2023 07:18

Doesn't seem like a lot of money for a full outfit which includes trainers and a bag. You could easily spend £300 on those alone.

Whatwouldnanado · 22/04/2023 07:23

Classic pieces you'll enjoy for years. See if you can get a skirt to go with the top and jacket. Have a great time.

hettiethehare · 22/04/2023 07:33

I don’t think that is that unreasonable at all if you are buying at a certain mid-range price point.

I’ve just totted up my most recent purchases
of the same and it came to about £500 (Arket jacket, T-Shirt, White Company jeans, NB trainers, Massimo Dutti bag - none of those are cheap but all are fairly average high street brands).

Fairislefandango · 22/04/2023 07:41

Not thrifty! But if you can afford it, so what? Tbh it wouldn't remotely occur to me to buy a whole new outfit for a one-day thing, unless it was an event for which I genuinely had nothing appropriate to wear - e.g. formal evening dress.

PuttingDownRoots · 22/04/2023 07:48

Thrifty would be buying it all second hand through a resell website or charity shop.
Other people would get it all in Supermarket or Primark

But as long as you can afford it... its you money.

Xmasbaby11 · 22/04/2023 07:51

i Think that’s good value and lovely items. You’ve done well!

as pp say, I don’t buy an outfit in one go but it’s a good idea as it means everything looks good together! It sounds like you’ll wear them a lot, not a one off.
