Wide leg trousers recommendations

I’m looking for some wide leg trousers - my criteria are that they are soft/slightly slouchy and on the casual side rather than smart (so not the stiffer/thicker fabric that smart trousers often come in). Probably looking for a dark colour. I’m tall so they have to be long enough!

I really like these Reformation ones in the slate or black, but they’re on the pricey side. I could afford them but if there’s something similar for a bit less then I’d be happy. I’m not looking for fast fashion options though, I don’t mind spending on quality and they’re a bit of a basic/staple that’ll be worn a lot. Had the cheapie M&S black wide leg trousers and they’re ok but want an upgrade now.

Any recommendations? Thank you!

Linen ones in H&M.

Wiennetta · 20/04/2023 15:44

Thanks both! H&M always feels too fast-fashion and not great quality. I don’t mind spending a bit for something that is going to last. The Cos ones look nice!

Just bought the toffee colour of this:

V similar to the reformation trousers - high waist wide leg front pleats.

Saint and Sofia do lovely ones

Try the Sloan pant

Reiss have a selection of wide leg trousers at the moment - lovely fabric.

Saint and Sofia are a nightmare for returns (try and fob you off with credit, search for other threads on them) and IMO not great quality. Beware.

I am a big fan of Me&Em wide leg trousers and they would work beautifully on you if you are tall OP. But they are the same price as Reformation! In an attempt to also find a cheaper alternative I have ordered Sezanne LouLou trousers. Will report back when they arrive!

@Stinkymalinkyfromdownthelane - I really like those trousers! Can I ask are they very wide? I’m the opposite of OP 5’3 and struggling to find wide ones that don’t swamp me.

I bought these from Raey at Matches last year. The quality is excellent and fit is good.

Matalan have got quite a lot and some seem to fit your description.

Wiennetta · 21/04/2023 08:17

Thanks everyone! I’m not keen on fast-fashion so not sure about Zara, Matalan etc. I don’t mind spending a bit for something that is going to last and looks great. I’m after good quality as wide leg trousers are a bit of a staple for me. The material is important as otherwise it can look a bit cheap and the cut is also important so it drapes nicely.

I’ll have a browse at Me+Em, Sézane, Reiss, Matches.

OP has already discounted Matalan, but for anyone else looking for similar and is prepared to consider Matalan..... I have had wide legged trousers from there in both black and navy and have had them for about 5 years. Excellent quality, still like new and look stylish. i also bought them in a cropped version about 3 years ago, great for holiday evenings.
i don't mind paying more for quality either but don't dismiss anything just because it's from a cheaper shop.

Hi - no they're not that wide - the cos ones are much wider - and they are also shorter than usual - zara is too long on me usually at 5'3. They are the same width all the way down the leg and i am pear shaped so did have to size up so they didnt bunch at the top of my legs - if that makes sense!

It’s not just about quality but it’s also an ethics thing @OMGitsnotgood. Reformation has a good ethical stance. I never trust cheap brands as it’s pretty much guaranteed that the workers aren’t being paid properly if trousers are £15 a pop. These brands also churn out so much. Will have a look into the other suggestions on here but fast fashion isn’t really appealing for me.

I'd like wide leg black jeans but can't find them anywhere.

SummaLuvin · 21/04/2023 13:54

In terms of fast fashion and ethics if you are buying on the high street there isn't going to be any great deal of difference in terms of worker rights whether you by from Primark, M&S, or Reiss. In general, when you pay more for an item you pay for quality of fabric, quality of construction (adding seams/darts to make something fit better, rather than the quickest/easiest method), and higher end marketing - not necessarily a better wage for workers. Reformation talk a good talk, and make stunning clothes, but when you drill down it's a lot of green washing. If you really care strongly about ethics you need to go very specialist and the cost is massive compared to what we are used to seeing.

I wouldn't outright dismiss Zara, Mango, and H&M - I have items from all which I am very happy with quality wise and really do look expensive, yes some of it can be poor, but not across the board. For me fast/slow fashion is a state of mind rather than where you buy from. You can purchase the most ethically produced, environmentally friendly items in the world but if you are over consuming and treating clothes like they are disposable then it's fast fashion. You can shop H&M only, but if you buy mindfully and only items you really want/need that aren't on a whim and super trend led, then that to me is slow fashion.

ApolloandDaphne · 21/04/2023 14:18

I got some lovely linen ones from Whistles

sleepwhenidie · 21/04/2023 16:42

The Sezanne trousers arrived. Not as wide legged as Me&Em, nor as high waisted, so they aren’t quite as good IMO, but they are nice. Long-I would need to shorten.

sleepwhenidie · 21/04/2023 16:43

I’m 5’5” - no much use if that’s not added!

You are coming across quite condescending here Wiennetta. Fast fashion and it’s “ethics” don’t really appeal to anyone do they? But a lot of people dont have much choice as they can’t afford to shop elsewhere. Plus like a PP said most high street shops all have their issues. Just bear that in mind when dismissing people trying to be helpful here.

BigSkies2022 · 21/04/2023 18:42

Mother of Pearl have great trousers in lovely fabrics, and make strong claims for sustainability, circularity of production and social responsibility in their supply chains, which are mostly Portuguese, Turkish and Italian. I haven't investigated these, and so I have no clue whether it is greenwash.

However, they do charge around £300 for trousers, and since, OP, you say Revolution is too pricey for your at £200, I wonder where you are going to find these high production values at, I dunno, £100? £50? What is your budget? What are you willing to trade off?

Have you thought about charity shop/secondhand purchases? Employing a tailor and paying a proper living wage to a skilled individual to make you a pair of trousers, or alter an existing pair? You would have more control over the production that way.
