As above really, I'm looking for something casual to wear with jeans/trousers. I'm not a style icon but although I'm nearly 57, I'm not quite ready for granny shoes. Don't want anything too young or too old. I usually wear converse but is that a cliche now?

I'm 5'9/10 and size 12-14 and have size 6 feet.

Eh? I take it you are trying to be rude. Arse!

I recently (well, since Covid) switched to comfortable shoes only, but still trying to retain some sense of style. I wear black trainers (my current ones are Veja, but now on their last legs and I’m looking at Adidas for a replacement), brogues, chelsea boots, and I’m the summer I wear sandals (a mix of Birkenstocks and Ancient Greek Sandals for when I have to look smarter). But I mostly wear these when walking the dog or popping to the shops: https://www.toa.st/collections/womens-boots/products/tretorn-terrang-boots-black

What’s your budget OP? Arket and Toast both have a good selection of good quality and stylish shoes. I’m in my mid 40s.

Our Black Tretorn Terrang Boots have a natural rubber and neoprene upper. They are durable and waterproof.

Thanks both, I'll have a look. I had looked at Veja and winced a little at the £100 plus but it's not that I couldn't afford it and I'm not hard on footwear. So no exact budget but I like value for money.

I guess the main use would be shopping, maybe popping into the pub in the summer, casual wear for work type of thing rather than for sports or muddy walks. I seriously cant do heels any more and wanted something other than very flat slip on type of thing. My heart kind of longs for some adidas sambas which my best friend had when we were about 10 which I covetted but were out of my financial league at the time. Boycotting nike so not those.

Is there a TK Maxx near you? They had loads of nice trainers in earlier this week, most were between £25 and £40.

Or they have a website.

BigBoysDontCry · 14/04/2023 22:37

Those are pretty similar to the veja @Ikeameatballs and similar price bracket too so both those are straight in the running 😊

We have a TKMAxx though it's not very big. Thanks for the heads up, I didn't think of there.

I’m your age. I live in trainers. I wear Nike Dunks (but I need to boycott too really!), Adidas bold which are chunky, Stan Smith's for summer-I know they are over done but I like them.

RockGirl · 14/04/2023 22:43

New Balance are so very comfortable and lots of designs to choose from.

missmoon · 14/04/2023 22:47

I love my Veja trainers (for their look) but they are sadly not the most comfortable. I would say Adidas or New Balance is probably much better for comfort.

BigBoysDontCry · 14/04/2023 22:49

Thank you for the further ideas and noted re comfort for the Vejas. My feet are pretty standard thankfully so nothing in particular awkward to make allowances for.

I'm a bit like a magpie and always love the pastel coloured ones or trimmed in those colours but i'm trying to think practical and classic.

I found Vejas very uncomfortable and I have standard feet.

dimpleton · 15/04/2023 07:27

M&S had some nice trainers in, if you don't want to break the bank.

Sunnycats · 15/04/2023 07:41

New Balance 327s - very popular at the moment but so so comfy. I don't think age should come into it at all though, I'm 46 and where what I like. 😊

Sunnycats · 15/04/2023 07:42

Wear not where!

Milksheikha · 15/04/2023 07:45

I have wide feet and have 3 pairs of Veja which I find very comfortable.

CantWait01 · 15/04/2023 07:46

I’m in a similar position. I have just ordered a pair of white Vans which are the first trainers I’ve found which are actually comfortable (don’t get on with Nike or New Balance) but teenage dc tell me I look like I’m on my way to a skate park.

fuzzbearpenguin · 15/04/2023 07:50

In summer I live in Superga pumps.

Moda pelle often have nice casual pump/trainer type shoes too

CharlotteSometimes1 · 15/04/2023 07:51

Go for the Sambas, they’re having a moment right now so you’d be bang on trend. If you can afford it, I’d gently suggest that maybe you could allow yourself to spend a little more and get the ones you love. Style should be ageless so I don’t consider my age when picking a brand.

Mercurial123 · 15/04/2023 08:25

Onitsuka Tigers Mexico 66 are really comfortable. My feet hate Vejas, so uncomfortable and always gave me blisters.

LawksaMercyMissus · 15/04/2023 08:38

Tamaris....not cheap but a huge choice, very comfortable and wide enough for my bunions!
