Light summer coat, hold me back from the floral raincoats!

Like other posters on here I'm trying to be more strategic about what I buy and wear, spending more on good quality clothes which won't look cheap or dated in a year.

(Though I suspect the long padded gilet I bought may date - but I've got a metric shittonne of wear out of it, so I'm still happy!).

I need a long, lightweight coat for rainy spring/summer days. Please stop me from buying the Orla Kiely waterproof macs
https://www.regatta.com/orla-kiely-waterproof-mac-navy-passion-flower/
as they are pretty but would make me look like an oversized three-year-old!

Aside from wanting to be steered towards something suitable for a grown-up woman, the other issue is that I have a classic British pear shape, I'm not overweight but nor am I willowy.
So belted trenches I'm a bit wary of ;)

I do spend a lot of time outside so it has to be genuinely well made and weatherproof.

Sort of thing a head of Finance or Legal might wear for a rainy June walk back to the station or taking her mother's ancient dog out for some exercise?

I've just bought this Utility Parka | UNIQLO UK

I bought yellow because I love yellow!!

It's really nice quality and looks good on.

Sorry, just realised you wanted at least knee length.

Still, it may have been worth posting as someone else might fancy some of the shorter jackets.

I always find these posts so helpful when looking for clothes, looking at Mumsnet posts saves me from having to scour the internet!

"Sort of thing a head of Finance or Legal might wear for a rainy June walk back to the station or taking her mother's ancient dog out for some exercise?"

This is oddly specific and hilarious😄But honestly why would you want a corporate looking raincoat? They all come in shades of grey, navy or olive and are unspeakably boring.

The OrlaK one has a beautiful print. But agree may look juvenile. Maybe go for a shorter length. Something that hits midwaist.

But if you are set on a staid raincoat, go for a bright one like this?

Please don't choose this it is horrendous 😬

Dont get why people are suggesting short lenght for a rain coat. That doesnt keep you dry if you are outside in rain, does it.

This 💯
I don't get the point of a rain jacket. Half your body gets wet. 🙄
At least with a coat three quarters is kept dry.

Me too, I recently got this in Olive and I love it. Very tempted to get another colour.

I was surprised how good it looks on, it's a good price too.

EvelynBeatrice · 06/05/2023 20:21

Look at Joules. They have a full length beige hooded raincoat and (drum roll) no belt.

EvelynBeatrice · 06/05/2023 20:23

The Brampton one.

My mantra in these situations is, What would Jennifer Aniston do? It’s helped me to put down monstrosities I’d considered buying, multiple times.

mumtohatty · 06/05/2023 20:59

Isle Jacobsen raincoats are gorgeous, I've had mine for 6 years and it was well worth the money, it's still like brand new

FayCarew · 14/04/2023 14:09

Get one that is at least mid-thigh in length and one that has a two way zip.
If you are getting a coat with a hood, try it on before you buy. You won't wear an ill-fitting hood.

A barbour might fit the bill.

Can you explain to me please the benefit of the two-way zip?

Very good strategy. I do the same thing by imagining a Parisian woman.

I have the long ilse Jacobsen and I think it looks chic, it's also very comfortable and waterproof.

whitesnowflake · 07/05/2023 06:08

@Paperbagsaremine I fin the sizing to be accurate so go for normal size. I'm a 10/12. Customer service is absolutely brilliant and if you are unsure about which size to take, contact them for advice. They have also sent me colour samples in the past. Returns have been easy.

User1264876 · 07/05/2023 06:17

I would probably get one of the longer Seasalt ones, at least it will keeps you dry which is the main thing.

Hellenabe · 07/05/2023 06:20

That uniqlo one looks great, wish it was in a nicer colour like navy

Jolenetookmyman · 07/05/2023 06:24

I have the Joules Helmsley. Long, waterproof kept me warm and dry at a wet weekend in the Lakes recently. They have an ebay outlet store which is decently priced.

atthebottomofthehill · 07/05/2023 07:40

www.ilsejacobsen.com/products/10-rain71-raincoat-685 I have this one and love it

Italianmeringuebuttercream · 07/05/2023 07:46

@atthebottomofthehill is the ilse jacobson warm enough to be a winter rain coat? Or is it roomy enough to wear layers underneath?

atthebottomofthehill · 07/05/2023 08:00

The one I have is not warm, but it has room for layers. It's light enough to wear to keep dry in the summer and roomy enough for layers when it's colder in spring and autumn. But I wouldn't wear it as a winter coat.

LadyEloise1 · 07/05/2023 08:55

They used to do that Ilse Jacobsen coat in the most gorgeous pink.
I think it was colour 508 or 509.
It would be fabulous on a grey rainy day- we get a few of them in Ireland.
At the time my size was unavailable. Sad
Now they've discontinued the gorgeous pink and replaced it with a ghastly calamine lotion colour. Angry
Sod's Law.

It is a light coat. I'd size up and have room for layers underneath.

HBGKC · 07/05/2023 09:09

OP I'm a pear (tho a petite one), and the Seasalt Janelle is flattering on me. It has poppered waist-cinching tabs that you can adjust to nip you in more/less, comes down below my knee at the front (and dips down even longer at the back, and is properly windproof and waterproof, which makes it warm even though it's not very padded (though it's thicker than a single-layer plastic Mac-type thing).

It's very lightweight, considering how winterproof it is. I invested in it as my school-run coat about 3 years ago, worn it 300+ days a year since then and it still looks pretty much like new.

My only regret is buying the navy, which has a fluorescent yellow zip/trim 😵‍💫 I'd much rather have the Woodland greenish one.

If you're hankering after a print, it even comes in this nice subtle blue-toned version:

Bluebells1970 · 07/05/2023 09:13

I've got one very similar to this from Didriksons.
https://www.didriksons.com/en/women/rain-sets/elly-women-s-parka-504135-i01

It's so versatile - great for walking the dogs but smart enough to wear to work and it's cut incredibly well so very flattering. It's nearly knee length on me (5ft6).

WilsonMilson · 07/05/2023 09:29

Let this be a warning to you. I made the mistake of buying this one. Ever since, I’ve seen nothing but elderly women in it. I’m mid 40’s. Honestly, every single person has been 75+.
Not so much head of legal as nursing home day out. Shame as I really like the colour on me, but now I’m too mortified to wear it and the family call it my granny jacket.

That's really nice. Is it warm, or light? I'm looking for one I can wear now, so quite lightweight.

Bluebells1970 · 07/05/2023 17:23

@MarkWithaC it's super lightweight and will keep draft out but I wouldn't wear it in winter without a fleece under.
