Flat shoes for work

Currently wearing ankle boots with midi dresses for work.
What flat shoes do you wear with midi dresses that are comfortable to walk in all day?

Last summer I walked to work in trainers then changed to heels but want to see if there are any smart ish flat shoes for work I could wear. Most look so frumpy!

If you fancy comfortable ballet flats, I've just got fit flop ones. Allegra I think they're called. Very comfortable. I can't cope with uncomfortable shoes anymore.

Oooh I quite like flip flop sandals so might try their ballet flats too, thanks!

Frumpy is mysoginistic? Ok my bad 🤷🏻‍♀️

@NatashaDancing thanks for the link to pretty ballerina, never heard of the brand before but looks quite nice. Are they comfy?

Ageist and misogynistic.

In your opinion. You are entitled to your opinion but it isn't an objective fact.

What's wrong with "making the dress the focal point" ? A dress will often be the focal point of many outfits.

What we are all expressing, including you, is our opinions. This is the reason for posting on the internet.
You defied someone to say the shoes on the model looked 'frumpy'. They do to many people who couldn't be bothered disagreeing with you because of your aggressive posting style.
The blue dress you posted was equally hideous.

ZeroPlastic · 15/04/2023 18:26

I can't get my head around loafers with a dress. Reminds me of being 12 and having to wear my school shoes with everything 😂 I'm sure it looks good to others, just not for me.

That said, I definitely find flats more modern and think midi plus heels can look a bit dated (although heeled boots are fine). I have lots of dresses like that Batsheva one from places like Pink City Prints so my taste obviously isn't everyone's.

Mrcpy · 15/04/2023 19:23

I look stylish in midi dresses and ballet pumps, or loafers. I’ve never got on with heels. The key is a good posture and being relatively slim. And it helps that nobody in my line of work gets a payrise for looking good, ie it doesn’t actually matter. But yes it’s possible to look good in flat shoes.

I’ve even been contemplating wearing white trainers to work. I think a pair of clean minimalist white trainers can look smart. But I’ll let you know how I feel once I’ve tried it 😉

Blimey there are some unnecessarily really snarky replies on here. 😂

@Wenfy I'm a bit confused by your comment about being over 40 for a couple of reasons - since when was over 40 an 'older' woman? I'm well passed that and consider myself an older woman but someone in their 40s, certainly not.

Also how can anyone take offence at being over 40

Yes, do you describe men as frumpy? It is negative term applied almost exclusively to women who don't dress in a way you/society think is young/attractive enough.

Heels are very outdated, especially in work settings, IMO.

I was the same re loafers but there's one young woman in my office who wears loafers with dresses and it looks very smart and right on her.

Pink City Prints are fabulous.

Very comfy. The leather is very soft but they last for ages. I have a black suede and patent toe cap pair that was bought in 2010 and are still going strong.

Bearpawk · 16/04/2023 06:42

Interesting point on the word frumpy.
I don't hear men described as frumpy but there must be a word for men who dress badly/ not stylishly.... I'm picturing men who wear shrainers ....

What js the acceptable alternative word for women? Just 'unstylish'? is it misogynistic to say some people dress badly, not necessarily linked to age?

My aunt for example is very comfortable but stylish dresser. Natural fabrics, shapes that look great on her figure. Nothing skimpy or 'young'. Mainly neutrals and navy - lots from madding dutti or cos. Linen trousers and comfy but stylish cloggs. Just puts together really nice outfits.

My mum however will wear a lot of stuff from supermarkets, bon Marché, like some polyester trousers and a fleece and some silver sandals from clarks. (I like some styles in clarks but not these ones)
What is an alternative word to describe that, if not 'frumpy' ?

Not sure what type of work you do but I'm in professional services and I'm client facing.

All the very senior people, be it men or women are fairly attractive and good looking. I don't think it's a conscious decision to only promote good looking people but there's definitely an unconscious bias going on.

I need flats for work due to a hip injury. I'm fine in winter but I really struggle in summer. I find loafers make me feel like a school girl, pointed ballet flats make me feel like a wizard (how do you walk up stairs too?). Trainers are ok but I seem to make them filthy within a few weeks as I have a 30 min walk to work and I don't really want to drag a second pair of shoes around.

blahblahblah1654 · 16/04/2023 07:13

I've never been able to wear heels. Young professionals all wear flats and certainly don't look frumpy. Like a pp said, it tends to be 50 plus ladies that wear heels. I wear ballet flats but always have. Not great support I guess but if you're sat at a desk all day you aren't covering miles in them.

blahblahblah1654 · 16/04/2023 07:16

Loafers and DM type shoes seem popular now, but they don't suit me.

I’m a doctor and it’s a competency-based career progression. “Frumpy” people might progress faster because they spend less time faffing about with clothes? (jk)
We’re still “client”-facing though so I like to look smart.

horridjobescapee · 16/04/2023 07:42

Just following. I'm changing jobs and I will be client facing. I can't wear heels or ballet flats due to disability - I need supportive shoes and I'm struggling to find some that aren't clumpy.

Pretty Ballerinas look lovely, do they offer any support to your feet?

RosesAndHellebores · 16/04/2023 08:45

@horridjobescapee Google Memery shoes. Some of their brogues/lace ups are neater than those in the shops.

Thank you. My feet are so broad that only hotter extra wide for me without squashing my toes and it's a real literal pain

RosesAndHellebores · 16/04/2023 09:55

Try Sargasso and Grey. DD is very wide and these work. They are expensive; she just has fewer shoes. Fortunately, as a teacher, she can wear trainers to work.

I can't think of a synonym which would be used for a man. There is "slob" or "slobby" but that involves being unkempt, untidy, grubby, crumpled suit, soup stains on tie and isn't the same.

Is "shrainers" a typo or a style horror I'm unaware of.

Depends on the style. The pair I was wearing yesterday (raspberry pink pointy leather) have a soft foam insole and rubber soles and I fair bounce along wearing them although completely flat. The ones with a small block heel have support but others are the traditional very flat , leather soles with no support.
