Flat shoes for work

littlese · 10/04/2023 07:37

Currently wearing ankle boots with midi dresses for work.
What flat shoes do you wear with midi dresses that are comfortable to walk in all day?

Last summer I walked to work in trainers then changed to heels but want to see if there are any smart ish flat shoes for work I could wear. Most look so frumpy!

@NatashaDancing And I think the picture of the huge dress and ballet shoes that you posted isn’t great either. I wonder what makes you right and me wrong?

And as for Quaker buckle shoes….

But I’d rather just accept that people’s tastes are different, without the sneering.

I think she looks fabulous.

This is where the picture came from.

As for sneering, I was responding to the "frumpy" posts.Adwoah Aboah

She does look fabulous, but it’s not something the average woman in the street could pull off.

I don't wear a lot of heels as I'm tall & my work dress code doesn't require corporate dressing.

I wear flat leather ankle boots a lot either laced up or Chelsea boots.

Currently, for going out I love the block heel slightly platform look & I have Esska sandals & ba&sh ankle boots in 2 colours

Sorry @NatashaDancing but that huge pink dress looks dreadful with those shoes! Both are OK in their own right but they do not work together at all. It's about proportions / volumes for me & that oversized fussy dress with the tiny flat shoes skew the proportions entirely. I would never wear that. Nor would i look at someone on the street wearing it & think she looked great.

I can't imagine where you would wear that dress either. Is this OK to wear in an office?

You see I often think the proportions of dress and high heels are completely wrong.

I wore this dress to the office with flat lace up boots a couple of weeks ago and also this week with pointy flats.

Flouncy dress .

The pink is too pink for the office but I would love to own that pink dress. I'd wear it as a summer dress. I own dresses that are as dramatic (or fussy/ frumpy'/ add your own term) and wear them as summer dresses.

I apologise if you thought I was sneering at you. I didn't mean to. I was responding to the "frumpy" and "are you over 40" post.

OldHouseLover · 15/04/2023 13:04

@NatashaDancing I love your blue dress & I can imagine it looking fabulous with laced up boots.

I don't like the pink dress much I'm afraid.

I don't ever wear high heels in the traditional sense of heeled pumps (loubutain etc) & I agree they would not work with those dresses.

I quite like a pointy toed flat though & if I'm not mistaken you linked to some really gorgeous ones with big bows on another thread? I need to find them again!

NatashaDancing · 15/04/2023 13:27

Thank you. If it were a really sunny day I might even wear the pink frock to the office.

Having spent an uncomfortable half hour sitting behind a male colleague and looking at the waistband of his pants very visibly showing over his ill fitting jeans, any reservations I might have had about mad dresses are long gone.

carriedout · 10/04/2023 07:43

The word 'frumpy' is outdated, misogynistic nonsense. Flat shoes look great, with the added bonus of being able to walk.

I wear brogues, loafers or mary janes.

So true.

trickybossmbe · 15/04/2023 13:47

Just because the pink dress is featured in Vogue, it does not mean it is stylish, or even nice. Also, none of the individual pieces comprise that outfit work together either.

That terrible Batsheva dress is far becoming the sartorial equivalent of . Please, stop trying to make it happen and including it in yet another thread.

Both dresses are something even Widow Twanky would refuse to wear.

Unfortunately, this thread is yet another example of certain posters dominating the conversation, shouting down those whom disagree and derailing the thread it in the process.

I think peoples idea of ‘smart’ or ‘work appropriate’ are quite different. I don’t work in a properly formal corporate environment, but I do need to dress in fairly conservative, smart clothing. I couldn’t get away with any of the dresses linked to on this thread, and certainly not trainers.

I tend to wear fitted pencil dresses or structured, tailored dresses with a bit of interest. They can look ok with a smart, simple flat sandal when it’s very hot, but I’m yet to find a flat shoe that doesn’t look wrong. I live in hope!

alpacamaraca · 15/04/2023 13:53

I have these in tan:

RosesAndHellebores · 15/04/2023 13:58

Really like those @alpacamaraca. M&S shoes are great if they fit you. In my experience they come with a complimentary blister; my mother says the same about Clarks.

Another shoe range I really like is Bobbies - French but available here from Harvey Nicks and a shop on Marylebone High Street. There is a better selection in the French shops.

I had these in the silver/pewter last year but they were SO hard to break in and cut my feet to shreds!

Accepted! It wasn't so much that I thought you were sneering at me personally, but more that there's a lot more sneering creeping on to these threads generally, as if there's only one version of 'stylish' to some people on here. Although I admit to sneering about leggings and tunics a lot myself, so pot/kettle, I guess.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 15/04/2023 14:04

Anyway, total thread derail. Sorry @littlese !

pastypirate · 15/04/2023 14:10

I wear vans most of the year at work in black or animal print with ankle grazers. Following for ideas though

Just because you say it isn't stylish doesn't make it not stylish.

alpacamaraca · 15/04/2023 13:53

Those are nice as are the pink suede scalloped pair from M& S someone posted earlier.

I think it's easier to find flats for dresses than heels- high heels can look very out of proportion on shorter dresses.

I wear loafers with dresses. Always liked that look.

Flat shoes are not "frumpy" with dresses. Pointed flats in particular are not "frumpy"

I'm not sure if age is relevant but my work shoes are flats or low heeled Mary Janes , or Quaker buckle shoes. I defy anyone to say these shoes or the model in the picture look "frumpy'

Pretty Ballerina

The shoes on the model are awful.

Honestly they might look 'ok' to some as they are on a very beautiful woman who most of us look nothing like. They are also being used to make the dress the focal point.

Ariela · 15/04/2023 16:52

I wear leather, can't walk in synthetics as they make my feet 'hot' - so deck shoes, sandals - I have a pair with closed toe which are very comfy, or Mary Janes

In your opinion. You are entitled to your opinion but it isn't an objective fact.

What's wrong with "making the dress the focal point" ? A dress will often be the focal point of many outfits.

Windywuss · 15/04/2023 17:07

If you fancy comfortable ballet flats, I've just got fit flop ones. Allegra I think they're called. Very comfortable. I can't cope with uncomfortable shoes anymore.

Agree. I stopped wearing any kind of heels the day I saw our chief exec bounding down the stairs in his comfortable flat shoes , followed far more slowly by an assortment of senior female managers all literally clinging to the stair rail to cope with their 6 inch heels and pencil skirts.

That was 10 years ago. I'm part of the senior leadership team now (despite my footwear).

There are loads of smart comfortable shoes out there - I like loafers but sometimes wear black leather trainers

MeetMyCat · 15/04/2023 17:35

I just can’t make flat shoes work with midi dresses, unless it’s trainers. So like a pp, once it’s too warm for tights and boots, the dresses go back into the wardrobe until it’s warm enough for sandals
