Those M and S sidestripe trousers

Are they now ok to wear everywhere? Just saw Deborah Meaden wearing them on Dragon's Den with a blazer, and then one of the women seeking investment was also wearing them.

I have one pair of these and love them, but not sure if I would wear them in such formal settings. Thinking about buying another because they are the last word in comfort for women of a certain age.

Ah no I'm after the width but thank you :)

Elevenutionary · 08/04/2023 20:25

I have them <waves to all my middle aged comrades>. I can confirm they’re comfy and paired decently, they look fine. Won’t rock the high mumsnet fashion world and rules, but hey ho. I have had a few compliments in them. They look good.

Someone mentioned the side stripe being unflattering. As a pear, short-legged vixen, quite the opposite - the stripe is leg lengthening.

I don’t have to dress up for work but tbh I can’t think they’re ever appropriate for work.

ScarlettDarling · 08/04/2023 20:31

I have two pairs and I really like them. Dh calls them my ‘Nana trousers’ but I don’t care. They’re comfy and I think they look good. I wear mine with a fitted top, denim jacket, big scarf and trainers.

knobheadex · 08/04/2023 20:37

I have a black pair and a cream pair. They're bloody great. Ridiculously comfortable, heavy fabric, hand well and flattering. They can be dressed up or down. I'm not sure what's not to love. Just because they're popular doesn't make something shit.

SchoolTripDrama · 09/04/2023 01:02

Def not, they're Joggers!

I find it hard to believe Deborah Meaden was wearing joggers?

These are the ones I find more formal because of the fabric. They've got a fixed pleat across the front as well. Definitely a trouser (despite their own description which does them no favours!) and not a jersey jogger.

I have a pair of these.
The fabric is quite heavy, so more suitable for winter and I find them very comfortable and usually wear them for travelling. Not sure I would wear them for work.
I do find them a bit flappy round the ankles though.

SirChenjins · 09/04/2023 10:04

To all of you who have them for work - what tops do you wear with them to avoid looking too casual?

A fitted white collared jersey shirt usually and a fitted blazer. Our deputy head was the first person I ever saw in them (and it was in 2019 thinking about it because it was a theatre thing) and I thought oooh they look nice.

@Bichette Mine are definitely not thick, the ones in the first links without the zipped ankle are much heavier jersey. (though mine are from last summer so they might have changed the fabric I suppose- I definitely couldn't wear mine in winter here, too cold but for summer they're great) I was going to order some more colourways for this sunmer- would you mind telling me the fabric of yours please? I don't want them if they've changed the zipped ones to jersey) (am in Italy so buy everything online!)

Bichette · 09/04/2023 10:29

According to the label on mine material is a 67% viscose/28% polyamide / 5% elastase mix
The sizing is quite generous. I am 1.65m and 60kg and usually a size 12 but these are are size 10 short length.

boboshmobo · 09/04/2023 10:40

Check your back view .. I seen a lot of women wearing them and the back isn't flattering

I tried them but they just don't suit me and my bum is normally ok

Not sure if the me and em ones are better though !

Iwantthepenthouse · 09/04/2023 10:52

I really don't like them. Does anyone remember Rachel from Friends wearing similar when she went to stop Ross' wedding? Every time I see that episode they really bug me.

LadyWithLapdog · 09/04/2023 10:59

They look informal so it depends on the work environment. I saw some tuxedo type ones with a shiny satin same colour band, those look more stylish, but too much for work.

Deborah was definitely wearing side stripe trousers in the just-finished series of Dragons' Den.

LlynTegid · 09/04/2023 11:03

I'd sooner wear a smart pair of jeans in a formal setting myself. Each to their own though.

Redebs · 09/04/2023 11:05

Ewww! They are horrible!
Definitely not for work

Jeans aren't formal

I'm being increasingly convinced that mumsnet have shares in M and S and are paying someone to say how wonderful m and s clothes are. Let's see how many lemmings jump and buy them now. Kerching!

Yes.
It's like those YouTube comments where someone will randomly start 'asking' about bitcoin investment and get lots of replies recommending the same dodgy scheme.

This is definitely advertising. It breaks advertising regulations.

And M&S clothes are so horrible, I can't believe anyone who isn't paid would be promoting them!

TheFairyCaravan · 09/04/2023 11:12

I’ve got two pairs of plain ones that I mostly wear round the house. I’ve got the navy ones with the green stripe down the side and a bright pink pair from Sainsburys. The Sainsburys ones are a lighter fabric than the M&S ones but you’d expect that as they were half the price.

I really like mine. I find them comfortable and flattering and have had many compliments.

CordyLines · 09/04/2023 11:14

They look awful (to me) for a work/formal setting. Chavvy and jogging vibes shout at me. OK for lobbing around the house, walking the dog, going to the supermarket etc. Fine. That's when comfort is key.

Believe it!😂I don't mind people saying I am not stylish or beautiful, but I am not a paid influencer. I like quite a lot of M and S clothes, including their jeans, which I am wearing now.

Didn;t expect this thread to be so controversial!

I'd wear them anywhere without the stripe TBH. The stripe is awful.

Leftbutcameback · 09/04/2023 11:44

I wear them for work instead of navy trousers in a less stretchy material, and also for more casual with trainers. But my work is very casual. I wouldn’t wear them to an interview because they are too casual. I do love them though!

Leftbutcameback · 09/04/2023 11:46

SirChenjins · 09/04/2023 10:04

To all of you who have them for work - what tops do you wear with them to avoid looking too casual?

In winter a round neck fitted jumper, in mustard or pink. In spring something like a shell top with a small fitted cardigan. I also have a gorgeous fine knit long cardigan which looks nice with them (it was quite expensive but I find it makes any work outfit look smarter).

And flat pointed shoes.

boboshmobo · 09/04/2023 11:48

Deborah's are definitely not M and s !

The high street copies the cat walk so hers will no doubt be a more expensive brand ..

Marks have thin stripes not a wide panel
