Only Curls? For thin curly hair

OneFrenchEgg · 07/04/2023 17:52

Ok so I HATE my hair. It's naturally grey now, which is better than dyed with a strip of white and grey temples every four weeks.
I'm crap at waiting - ideally it would be shoulder length but I just had another bob/graduated thing done. I'm also growing out an undercut. It's thin, but lots of it. Not uniform either - straight bits, wavy bits. Random ringlets.
As you can imagine I've spent literally £100s over the years on curl stuff and straightening products.
Is Only Curls any good? I'm about to spend a load more on a bundle with them but I've been disappointed so many times!

I only have their curl enhancing crème, which is good, I use it on days I want to bring the curl out, after washing. Otherwise I do wash with Faith in nature conditioner.

CrystalMaisie · 07/04/2023 18:40

I read a thread about it on a curly girl forum I’m on, lots of people saying it really dried their hair out.

Ypsilanti · 07/04/2023 19:13

I have super fine curly hair, and not enough of it 🙄. I spend a lot of time trying to get maximum volume without exposing my scalp. And it’s really easy to apply too much product and my hair look greasy,

I recently ordered the Only Curls mousse and light hold crème. They’re…ok. I don’t rate the mousse as much as I had hoped from the reviews. I much prefer Aunt Jackie’s mousse (US link but you can get it here easily https://www.auntjackiescurlsandcoils.com/collections/best-sellers/products/frizz-patrol-anti-poof-twist-curl-setting-mousse) as it gives good hold and definition but less frizz from blow drying. And it’s harder to apply too much.

Frizz Patrol Anti-Poof Twist & Curl Setting Mousse | Aunt Jackie's Curls and Coils

This lightweight, frizz-busting elixir sets waves, curls, and coils, leaving them smooth, shiny, and defined. Formulated with Grapeseed Oil for gorgeous sheen, and Tamanu & Jojoba Oils for penetrating moisture retention, and smoothness, Frizz Patro...

Also fine hair and thinner than used to be. Also grey.

My hairdresser uses is (curly hair specialist) and my hair is lovely on the day I have it done. But Only Curls can have shea butter and coconut in - shea maybe too heavy for fine hair. Plus my hair does that instant really dry thing (there is a name for it..ah...possibly flash drying?) with coconut. Coconut things I'd be OK with for a few washes and then suddenly Poufff....dry, frizzy mess.

Try to resist the haircuts if you want to grow it (been there, done that). I used to think my curl had gone due to age....but it was because I kept getting it cut.....so not long enough for the ringlets of my youth to actually form.

What are you using at the moment and why the desire to change products? Do you actually need to or is it may be technique that is the issue rather than product?

I find:

  1. I do need to shampoo at least once a week (I use Faith in Nature Rose) and then Faith in nature Rose conditioner. Otherwise my hair gets weighed down and dull.
  2. Google Manes by Mel and the ribbon styling method. You basically help the curls forming by brushing whilst v wet and pulling it against the brush - a bit like making a ribbon curl against scissors. Her videos explain it much better. This has given me much better, more even curls
  3. Cheap gel (Ecco gel) and a touch of UG curl jelly works brilliantly for me. The cheaper stuff gives more hold (so can get to day 3/4 without washing) and the UG gives a bit more shine so I kind of graze it over the top once I have ribbon curled and squished the curls up a bit.

I have fine curly hair. I loved the smell but it made my hair stringy.

OneFrenchEgg · 07/04/2023 20:01

Ooh this is amazing feedback thank you! So glad I posted to ask.
So ideally I would have straight long hair. I can't face colouring it again so I'm waiting it out to be longer and the curls will drop.
It's..
frizz, fuzzy curls not neat ringlets or graceful waves. Interspersed with straight bits. And two hair cuts going on as I'm growing some bits out (fringe and undercut) so a right mess too.

I find it hit and miss - mine is thin and about shoulder length. On good days my hair has a lovely curly wave that'll go into a few ringlets here and there and on bad days it's a frizzy, flyaway mess.

I got the starter pack for Christmas which I think had shampoo, conditioner, some leave in conditioner and a setting gel. If you follow the instructions to the letter, scrunch and holding and using a t-shirt or something instead of a proper towel, it tends to come out okay.

But it's a lot of pissing around when my usual routine is a quick shower and let it airdry for a 50-50 chance of a good hair day.

OneFrenchEgg · 07/04/2023 20:21

Yeah I feel like the holy grail isn't really out there!
I hate blow drying it because it just fluffs up. And I cannot be bothered with all the faff. I watched a video which seemed quite straight forward which is why I looked - £60 for a set is just a lot to invest on top of the rest I've chucked away!

I have fine wavy straight hair that I have blow dried straight all my life. Unfortunately the menopause has left me with a boiling hot head which means that my hair flicks and waves and won't stay straight any more so I'm trying to embrace the natural texture. I've tried lots of curl creams and texture sprays but they are usually to heavy for my hair. I've just discovered Merwave which is designed for wavy hair and it's a bit of a game changer. The mousse / gel are much lighter and actually encourage the wave rather than drowning it - can thoroughly recommend!

Craftyrose · 07/04/2023 20:45

I really like only curls. My hair is fine and pretty curly. I ditched shampoo to only wash with conditioner and that's helped too. I don't like the mousse much, but I use the curl enhancing gel. Not the mega hold one, I didn't like that as much.

fiftysth · 07/04/2023 22:06

It's too heavy for my fine wavy hair. At the moment I'm only using the Living Proof Vanishing Oil. It's working really well and so much easier complicated routines with lots of products. I take the excess moisture out with a Good Wash Day towel first.

OneFrenchEgg · 08/04/2023 09:06

Does anyone have any recommendations for hair like this ?
Fine, grey, mixed curls and waves - goes clumpy and frizzy.

Like this - this is damp with gel in - it never looks lovely or like hair I want. It's also far too short.

That's like my hair - as per my post above I recommend Merwave as it's for wavy not curly hair and is much lighter than the curly hair products

OneFrenchEgg · 08/04/2023 10:45

I'll have a look at Merwave - currently using Umberto Giannini

I absolutely love Only Curls. I have thick wavy hair though so I can't give you specific advice. However, their customer service is absolutely fantastic. I emailed them and asked about their products before I purchased and got a very quick and specific reply. They have an app with loads of tutorials and curly advice. I would really recommend them as a brand. I think it's worth getting in touch and asking about their products for your specific hair type

JuneOsborne · 08/04/2023 11:52

A lot of curl products are really heavy. In your case I'd steer clear of any scrunch out the crunch type products, anything that leaves a cast.

Have you tried anything like Philip Kingsley elasticizer? Might be worth a shot.

Then I'd use something really light-weight for styling. Boucleme do a light gel that if I remember correctly, doesn't cast. And, actually, now I think about it, shrub do a curl defining cream that could be just what you're looking for. Gives definition, non of the separation and gives a bouncy and soft finish.

JuneOsborne · 08/04/2023 11:53

(buying and trying curly products is my hobby!)

Cookerhood · 08/04/2023 11:55

I tried Only Curls & didn't get on with it. I use Trepadora products, they are fabulous (££).

EmmaChizzett · 08/04/2023 11:59

Only Curls is very light on my very fine and fragile, very curly hair and the normal gel has no cast.
I've spent a fortune on other products that don't work on my hair, so I'm sticking with Only Curls for the moment. I would only buy the trial size though, as I find I have to change products now and again.

JuneOsborne · 08/04/2023 14:48

I rate trepadora too, but I can't think which one would be light enough for ops hair. Huge fan of the papaya one, but boy does that leave a cast!

OneFrenchEgg · 08/04/2023 17:25

Hmm well weirdly someone stopped me just now in Boots to say how lovely my hair was and how long did it take to grow out the colour. So it's the wave / curl I need to sort. Maybe the merwave is the way forward, it's v interesting people talking about 'heavy' products, that hadn't occurred to me at all.

What is your current routine/products. As it can be as much technique as what you are using.

MargotMoon · 08/04/2023 20:40

I have similar hair - fine, wavy/curly, going grey, and thinning on top. The best product I've found was one I bought from my hairdressers but you can get it online - Davines's Curl Moisturising Mousse. I always used to use gel but I am a convert to mousse but you've got to apply it to hair while it's still good and wet, not let it dry.

They're not the cheapest though. I'm lucky that my hairdresser gives out samples to try so I can test what works for my hair before I commit, but I only use Davine's products now.

I'm so tired of trying routines tbh!
I did the whole no sulphate, squish to condish, special towel, scrunch the crunch etc
Now I just leave to dry after putting some cream / gel in and scrunching a bit
