Only Curls? For thin curly hair

Ok so I HATE my hair. It's naturally grey now, which is better than dyed with a strip of white and grey temples every four weeks.
I'm crap at waiting - ideally it would be shoulder length but I just had another bob/graduated thing done. I'm also growing out an undercut. It's thin, but lots of it. Not uniform either - straight bits, wavy bits. Random ringlets.
As you can imagine I've spent literally £100s over the years on curl stuff and straightening products.
Is Only Curls any good? I'm about to spend a load more on a bundle with them but I've been disappointed so many times!

Living proof curl enhancer is lovely on my fine wavy curls but going to look at other recommendations on here

Puppylucky · 08/04/2023 21:23

It's interesting to hear the debate about cast as Merwave products definitely do leave a cast that needs to be scrunched out but it's very light so it just holds the wave in place

Squiblet · 08/04/2023 21:54

Davines is so nice. I have fine, curly/frizzy hair and have to use medicated shampoo so it usually looks meh. But it's at its best when I've used a combination of two davines products: a little all-in-one leave-in conditioning milk, mixed with a little of their curl serum.

OneFrenchEgg · 09/04/2023 09:33

Listed everything suggested, might try the Merwaves first although Faith in Nature looks good.

Conditioners /shampoo
Faith in Nature

Styling products:
Only Curls curl enhancer crème
Mousse
Eco gel
UG gel
Merwave mousse and gel
Living Proof vanishing oil
Elasticizer
Boucleme gel
Shrub crème
Trepadora (is there one light enough for my hair)
Davines curl mousse
Living Proof curl enhancer
Davines conditioning milk

Comments on OC (thinking of my hair type):
Only Curls can dry hair out
OC is okay
OC made hair stringy
OC is heavy
OC hit and miss
Really like OC original gel
Love OC

I think the Trepadora papaya slip would be ok, after all they use it on all sorts of curls in the salon. The shampoo is amazing - very expensive but a bottle lasts me 6 months. When they didn't have it in stock the salon suggested Faith in Nature.
I also use curly jelly (Umberto Gianni) as the Trepadora gel is to expensive for me to use all the time in the quantities I need, but I have very thick hair

Has anyone tried JVN hair?

Just popping back to show how I actually style my hair/apply the products can make a difference. Over the last few days I have done 3 different methods, same products.

If I did not use a brush or finger coil my hair it would probably look quite similar to your photo @OneFrenchEgg. Actually, no, my hair if I do not add some definition is awful - reminds me of the 1980s perms!. I have learnt that I do need to do something with it rather than gel and squishing it a bit. If I don't, I end up with each strand of hair curling in it's own way and it can look messy/frizzy rather than curly. I worked out I need to ensure the strands of hair were aligned - so they could kind of hang out together in the same direction, then the curls would be curls/ringlets/clumps rather than flyaway and stringy. Particularly as my hair is fine.

Have tried various things - "praying hands" is one technique - but not great with mine. Tried a wide tooth comb and denman brush and both do help. By brushing through the gel once out of the shower and thenhelping form the curl, I get better results. And gently squishing the curl up to my scalp to encourage the curl all the way to the roots.

None of them create perfect, frizz free curls - but I think that is the very nature of curly hair. Especially now it is grey.

Non curly people may not be able to see any difference in any of the photos attached. Curly haired people may not - it maybe just the imperfections you can only see in yourself.... who knows.

Anyway, I thought I'd share if of use.

Doing it does take a bit more time than just squishing some gel through. And of the 3 photos 1 is the quickest, 2 takes a bit longer, 3 takes the longest. But the greater definition with all of them on wash days gives me hair I can refresh/not need to wash for 2-3 days which is a bonus!

Hi - thank you, I can see the difference and would aim for 3 I think, proper ringlets don't suit me at all, probably due to my current cut. I need to practice more, it feels a bit overwhelming though!
I'm thinking of trying the OC mousse as it keeps coming up for wavy hair on TilTok (probably algorithms?) and have ordered Faith in Natire from Boots (only lavender available).

Also @ChopOrNot that's a really good guide. Do you have a blog or group you could post it too? RL examples are so helpful.

Your hair is beautiful @ChopOrNot !

Products aside, the thing I've found helps the most with my thin, curly hair is a diffusion attachment for the hairdryer. I've got a Revlon pro something or other.

ChopOrNot · 13/04/2023 15:04

Thing is to just change one thing (bitter experience), So if you are using Faith in Nature/UG curl jelly - stick with those and try a different application technique. See if it helps.

If you change product and technique you will not know what has made it better/worse.

I meant to add to my post with the photos, that the thing to remember is if it is frizzy when it is wet/damp, it will be frizzy when it is dry.

Oh, and the other thing - is to add product/gel/mousse to wet hair - not hair that has been dried out at all. You kind of want to seal some moisture in, plus wet hair sticks together a bit better - so the curls clump better/less stringy.

I sometimes blow dry, sometimes don't. But gently with difuser. In my pics 1 & 2 were blow dried. 3 wasn't - which is why it is a bit longer looking....curl drops a bit when air dried I think.

And @OneFrenchEgg , I too should have been born with dead straight hair. Long, dark, squishy. <sigh>

OneFrenchEgg · 13/04/2023 15:33

Yes I long for straight swishy hair.
Good point - I'll try Faith in Nature and hold off OC for now.
The wet thing always seems so counterintuitive but I will try again.

I apply to hair straight from the shower (or sometimes in the shower once turned off), do the styling/coiling/brush thing (have a microfibre towel tied around my shoulders to avoid drips) and then use the same towel to gently cup the ends and squish the curl up to my scalp and pull out excess water then. It does maybe remove some product as well...but it means the hairs are "set" together before I start touching them with the towel. So less frizz.

BotCrossedHun · 13/04/2023 15:57

Reading all with interest. I've frizzy thick hair though, not thin, but also greying, and it just looks huge if I let it go curly.

Anyone tried Windle products? They keep advertising on facebook etc and of course the reviews there are great as it's their page, but I'd like to hear from someone neutral who's tried them

Howtohideasausage · 19/09/2023 10:48

How did you get on One French Hen? What worked for you?

OneFrenchEgg · 10/12/2023 11:41

Hi just found this again, I've reordered the larger sizes after trying a bundle. The more I used it the better my hair got so I'm sticking with it for now
