Do people still use hairspray?

I've had my hair in a pony tail for about 15 years (since having kids, basically), and now that I've got a bit more time on my hands I'm trying to sort my hair out.

It's very thick (although according to my hairdresser, "the individual hairs are very fine, you just have an awful lot of them") and wavy.

I've been straightening it, which I like, but when I go out it frizzes up after a couple of hours. I use Frizz-ease on it when it's wet, but other than that just standard shampoo and conditioner.

How do I stop the frizzing? Does hairspray make a difference? Is hairspray even still a thing? I know you can buy it, but I don't know whether it's people trying to hold curls in place or whatever who are the target market!

A lot of the women on my sports team use hairspray to stop chub rub from burning holes in their thighs...

I curl my hair with a curling iron so use hairspray to keep the curls in, it's humid where I live so they'd drop out quickly without it!
I've tried lots of brands of varying price but have treseme to be the best for me.

My bloody mother uses it.....and despite asking her not to spray it in my house and it makes me feel sick, she STILL uses it
fucking elnette

I do if I want to wear it up and it just isn't behaving - I have a small can and it lasts for months!

This is all helpful, thanks! I've tried letting my hair go curly, but it just doesn't ever get there. Straight works better.

Thank you for the recommendations everyone!

I'm mid-30s and they will have to pry my Elnette from my cold, dead hands. I have very fine hair, but a lot of it, so anytime I put it in a plait or ponytail (basically any kind of up hairstyle), I have to use hairspray to stop it all just sliding straight back out of the bobble/clips. Elnette holds it without looking hard or crispy.

This !!!!!!!

You need styling creme as I’m sure everyone is saying.

Bumble is v good for straight and curly

You might find a bit of hair oil will help too if it’s v dry - aveda is good - but try just curl crème to start

Hairspray is to hold a shape not tackle frizz.

The Frizz Ease one tackles my frizz.

Hairspray definitely keeps my frizzy hair under control.

Yes I use it, am also an old fart but have very similar hair, very fine but loads of it and, as a PP said, prone to fizzing up if a cloud passes overhead!

I've learnt that there is no point in using any styling creme or leave in serum or oil as, even if I only put it on the very ends of my hair, it creeps upwards to my head overnight and I'll have greasy hair the day after washing it. I try to only wash my hair every 4 days as its such a pain to dry and straighten.

So hairspray it is, it keeps the ends from frizzing up and it calms down those little fine flyaway hairs on the top of my head.

I have lots of hair but it's fine & wavy too. I use the John Frieda Frizz Ease hairspray it's fab!

shivawn · 07/04/2023 16:44

I don't. I once accidentally set my hair on fire from a candle in a pub, thanked my lucky stars I hadn't put on hairspray that night and I have a fear of using it now.

cocksstrideintheevening · 07/04/2023 17:22

I haven't used hairspray for years but my tweens have just come back from town with two massive cans and that slicked down middle parting ponys are back...

Runnerduck34 · 07/04/2023 20:22

I've wavy fine flyaway hair so use elnett hairspray otherwise I look like I've been dragged through a hedge backwards within 5 mins of stepping outside.
Elnett is the best imo, its a light touch and doesn't set hard like some brands but holds well.
My 19 year old DD also loves it!

Clickncollect · 07/04/2023 20:29

I have never stopped using hairspray lol. Smooths down the fly away hairs on the too if my head and a nice all over blast to give it a bit of a swish. I’m 45

DiaryofWimpyMumm · 08/04/2023 16:16

My mum still uses it every day. Her hair always looks nice
