Do people still use hairspray?

I've had my hair in a pony tail for about 15 years (since having kids, basically), and now that I've got a bit more time on my hands I'm trying to sort my hair out.

It's very thick (although according to my hairdresser, "the individual hairs are very fine, you just have an awful lot of them") and wavy.

I've been straightening it, which I like, but when I go out it frizzes up after a couple of hours. I use Frizz-ease on it when it's wet, but other than that just standard shampoo and conditioner.

How do I stop the frizzing? Does hairspray make a difference? Is hairspray even still a thing? I know you can buy it, but I don't know whether it's people trying to hold curls in place or whatever who are the target market!

My hair is 'natural' and wavey... Ergo, it has a life of its own, and can look like I have just stepped out of a fancy hair salon one day, and then like I have been dragged through a gooseberry bush backwards the next day.

It looks good MOST days if I use this...

L'Oreal Elvive Dream Lengths No Haircut Cream 200ml | Hair | Superdrug

No idea why it's called 'no haircut cream.' It used to be called 'de-frizzer' or something like that. Anyway, just a few blobs of this on the palms of my hands, and I run it through my hair after washing it (when my hair is 90% dry,) and it goes really nice/wavy, and has no frizz. Lasts for a few days til the next wash too.

I have two cans and never use them !

PrettyMaybug · 07/04/2023 12:59

Oh, by the way, I have not used hairspray for more than 15 years.

FionnulaTheCooler · 07/04/2023 13:01

I use hairspray on DD to make sure her bun stays in place for her dancing lessons, and smooth down any flyaway hairs. Don't use it on myself.

I think people do as whenever it's been windy some people have hair that looks neat and set. They tend to be people over 40.

DustyLee123 · 07/04/2023 13:09

I do !
But I think you should embrace your waves and get some good quality curly hair products, and see what happens.

Mumof1andacat · 07/04/2023 13:10

I'm under 40 and use it every day to smooth down the fluffyness of my hair. I also use hair serum but that's not enough.

SpikyHatePotato · 07/04/2023 13:10

Yes, because I have very fine fly away hair, and any leave-in product just makes it greasy

BigFatHamster · 07/04/2023 13:12

Yes I use hairspray. Even though I use different “no frizz” products, I still find I sometimes need some extra help to control my hair. And yes I’m late fifties and an old fart.

daisiesandpeonies · 07/04/2023 13:13

I have Afro hair - if I straighten my hair then I use hairspray before straightening it (after blow drying and before the straightening irons) and again afterwards. Tresemme Firm hold. I keep it in my bag and top it up throughout the day/night. Otherwise it goes curly again the second I go outside, especially if it's very humid or drizzling. I also take care to stay away from open flames... Grin

MathsNervous · 07/04/2023 13:13

🙋 I do!

PollyThePixie · 07/04/2023 13:14

I use hairspray. Not loads of it. Just enough to hold my hair in place a bit.

PollyThePixie · 07/04/2023 13:15

Sorry. I’m 65. Oh, and I also use heated rollers.

retrosteamband · 07/04/2023 13:17

Why wouldn’t people use hair spray anymore lol

my hair tends to stay straight with serum alone. I tend to use hairspray to make my curls last.

Sorry. I’m 65. Oh, and I also use heated rollers.

I'm 35 and love a heated roller ❤️ Best way to get that bounce

SisterAgatha · 07/04/2023 13:17

I do but I brush it out so it holds without looking set or hard. You can buy bouncy hairspray that does the same effectively.

I only use it when I’ve put waves in my hair though.

Slimjimtobe · 07/04/2023 13:18

Ooh that’s a good idea to put in on before using straighteners! Might try that (though I have very limp oily hair and I like crimpers! Remember those)

MrsMitford3 · 07/04/2023 13:21

I have been using Elnet forever I accept it may be marketed to an older demographic and the lady on the can looks like she is still in the 1960's but my hairdresser loves it and so do I

I have hair that has some natural curl but blow dries really nicely. It is very responsive to weather and frizzes up if a cloud goes overhead.
I just do a quick overall spray and it makes a big difference.
It's not like laquer and you couldn't tell to look at it but does help!

mynameiscalypso · 07/04/2023 13:24

I use a light hairspray just to keep my hair slightly under control. I think it's an Aveda one so feels less harsh than proper old style hairspray

goingtotown · 07/04/2023 13:29

Only use to spray loose glitter on cards.

Mercurial123 · 07/04/2023 13:49

I use Davines hairspray in summer when it's super humid, I'm not in the UK and it helps tame the frizz.

DustyLee123 · 07/04/2023 13:53

I also now use curlers rather than blow drying. It reduces electricity, and saves my time.

ImpossibleDrear · 07/04/2023 13:59

I have very fine straight hair cut short. I use a ton of product to give it body and texture - hairspray makes it good and sticky.

memyselfi · 07/04/2023 14:01

This !!!!!!!
It's amazing , I'd never be without it .
