Help me find a mid-length but not frumpy haircut!

I’ve been growing my hair for a good few years but have had it every length under the sun in the past.

I’m bored of it now and have decided it’s time for the chop and originally wanted it to be shoulder length but I’m going to donate my hair and it needs to be at least 8” which would take us to bob length. I’ve got a 17 month old and am 20 weeks pregnant so want something low maintenance but don’t want to look like I’ve given up and gone for a mum bob.

I’ll attach a pic of my my hair but there’s lots of it and I have a cow’s lick so a full fringe doesn’t work (but a side fringe does). It’s pretty straight but has developed a slight wave over the last few years.

When my hair was shorter I used to style it like that sometimes and I really liked it but it’s too thick to hold for long so isn’t practical for an everyday style, unfortunately.

Isn't that what you meant by "mum bob" though? Did you look at scandi bob?

Blondbombsite · 02/04/2023 13:27

I like the Scandi and the Italian bob posted upthread too. I think maybe the Italian bob offers a bit more versatility. Normally I’d go for more of a side fringe (it just grows out incredibly quickly hence why it’s not visible in all of these pics) but maybe it could look chic to be one length.

I've got a longish feather cut, mullet type, but not, heavily layered cut.

I suppose like a shoulder length pixie cut.

I love it as I don't need to do anything bar rough dry and put some product through it.

I was going to say like Miley Cyrus in the perfume ads, but obviously 200 years older and 20 times the size.

I bet you look amazing! I was eyeing up a similar style when watching Yellowjackets last night but I need it shorter and don’t think it will work as well with a round face and cow’s lick.

I'd go for a long bob, skimming your collarbone. Looks good polished or wavy.

Definitelycross · 02/04/2023 14:12

@Blondbombsite thank you but I think it can frame a round face and my hair is that really annoying type that waves in the wrong place and curls in others.

I think the beauty of this type of cut is the more dishevelled you look the better it can look. Zero effort for maximum cool. Not that I'm cool but you know what I mean.

Also far easier to grow out colour too. I'm lucky mine is the same colour as the photo.

I think if you’ve got wavy enough hair that style looks great and I hope my hair goes such a nice shade when the greys come in. My DM was almost totally silver by my age but I haven’t found any greys yet. Most of those pics above are of my natural colour but the more recent ones show where I have a T head once or twice a year, as I got older I found it went a bit darker in the winter so I brighten it up every now and again.

I like the one on the left here. My tiktok feed is currently full of women getting these type of “shag” cuts.

Long Bob is the way to go

NellyNoName · 02/04/2023 18:57

I think something like this (maybe a touch longer to your collar bone) would look great on you OP.

Go for a lob rather then a Bob

YukoandHiro · 02/04/2023 19:08

Don't cut your hair short if you're pregnant. The best thing you can do for your appearance in the first year postpartum when all attempts at looking after yourself fall is away is have hair that can be swept back.

Take it from me: mid length hair. No time to style with two under six. I look like a birds nest most days.

Badger1970 · 02/04/2023 19:24

I've got an Italian bob (albeit without intention), and it's really versatile. It still has enough length to wear up, or curl if I feel the urge but most days, I just add some nioxin thickening mousse and blow dry. I can either blow dry the ends under with a round brush, or not use a brush at all and scrunch it.

Stress and the impending menopause had thinned my hair quite badly, so I had about 4 inches cut off and this has made a world of difference.

Rayn22 · 02/04/2023 19:36

Oh my! I could have wrote this! However I am older than you at 48. During my thirties I had a sharp bob and looked fab. Tried having one just before covid and I looked like a middle aged lady. Decided to go long hair and sod it.
I think bobs can look amazing but I also think they are aging and look best when you are younger.

Pawpatrollermum · 03/04/2023 12:25

why don’t you change your parting to the middle and get a fringe or bangs (like the last picture) the longer length suits you.

Because I’ve got a cow’s lick it doesn’t sit properly if I do that. I can go lower or deeper with my parting but not completely central. A curtain or side fringe works but not a full one or one that’s too short.

I could probably do the fringe like the last pic (which I like) but the parting would have to be off centre.

Ignore the previous posters OP. I know exactly what you mean re the mum bob and its frumpy look I want to avoid too.

The photo NellyNoName posted would look great on you.
Have you tried doing wavy hair to try to jazz it up a bit.
