Baccarat Rouge

I wonder if I'm the only person in the world that hates the small of baccarat rouge 540. Everyone raved about it so due to the price I bought a dupe to try first. It was rank and made my feel sick as if a migraine was coming on.

I thought no way can everyone be raving about that and assumed I had a dodgy dupe.

I recently got a 10ml sample bottle of the real thing and it is equally as rank. It has a weird overpowered toxic smell with an undertone of teenage boy BO! I had to wash it off as it was making feel so nauseous and I can still smell it now when thinking about it.

I work in a school and there are a few kids with asthma and I was worried I would trigger them in to an attack if I wore in class.

Why are people going crazy for this minging perfume!

Well done with this post very helpful

ImpossibleDrear · 29/03/2023 12:09

I tried a sample of this recently and it was overpoweringly sweet and cloying on me. Hated it.

VanillaSpiceCandle · 29/03/2023 13:07

I think the people who are revolted by it, rather than just dislike or are unimpressed with it probably dislike the combination of heavy jasmine and ambergris. It’s very animalic, definitely an acquired taste.

I’m wearing it today and hope I don’t smell of teenage boy armpits Blush

I think of it as one of those perfumes that men who wear perfume like - those big overpowering dirty scents with a medicinal tang. I was surprised at how much I disliked it! Usually quite like most perfumes exclet the really fruity ones.

VanillaSpiceCandle · 29/03/2023 13:25

It’s funny you say that. I think it’s more of a feminine fragrance - I could never imagine my DH wearing it and we share a few unisex fragrances.

I think heavy jasmine as very feminine though so maybe it’s that.

Cinnamon23 · 29/03/2023 13:28

It does seem to be a ‘love it or hate it’ fragrance. I like it, but my favourite MFK is Gentle Fluidity Gold.

They have a few that get overlooked due to BR’s popularity!

MedievalMadness · 29/03/2023 13:33

I love it but couldn’t afford it. I tried about 4 dupes which were all awful on me. I’ve never found a dupe of anything that I like. it’s ok not to like something that lots of other people like. But I’d not base my opinion on a dupe.

I think I am very much in the minority as it is definitely one of the most popular luxury scents. I'm slightly disappointed I didn't love it as I am on the hunt for a new perfume. I may hate it due to how it reacts on my skin.

I haven't. I based my opinion on the actual perfume

Gosh i really want to smell it! I find the tobaccoy ones quite attractive too.

A lot of it is about how a perfume mingles with your own personal chemical mix on the skin after a while.

I manage to make a lot of perfumes smell RANK. Hilariously awful while the same thing sprayed at the same time will smell lovely on my friend.

When i find one which stays smelling good i treasure it.
Chanel no.5 stays true. Also Jlow Glow and Nuxe.

Stugs · 29/03/2023 13:50

I wanted to love it too! I'm still completely confused by it tbh 😆

Laiste · 29/03/2023 13:52

A trip down memory lane: Anais Anais came out when i was an early teen, and when me and my mate were knocking about town i would regularly go and find a tester and drown myself in it! It smelled lovely on me. Couldn't afford to buy it. My DM would love the smell on me when i got home.

Xmas came around and we both received a bottle. Well - it smelled awful on her and she was very very peeved! All those years ago and she still brings it up sometimes 😂

Chanel number 5 smells awful to me. Like cat wee! I didn’t even try it on. I was so disappointed as I wanted to love it as it’s THE perfume isn’t it. I’ll stick to my stinky Baccarat!

Ponderoveryonder · 29/03/2023 14:05

It’s a very marmite fragrance, like Angel is, and very overpowering. I put it in the same category as Tom Ford tobacco vanille too, they’re the fragrances that you shouldn’t wear on public transport, or at the gym. Save it for the boudoir!
My friend wears BR . I once sniffed her several aisles away in the supermarket 😄

WeeBitOfWoo · 29/03/2023 14:06

When it first came out and was still quite niche, I smelled it but wasn’t a fan. Just not my style - I don’t like the slightly medicinal base notes - but not offensive.

Now? I swear I am not exaggerating when I say that not a day goes by when I’m not overwhelmed with BR540 or a dupe (probably a lot of dupes!) on public transport, at work, in restaurants etc ( in London). It is easily the most popular fragrance among men and women that I smell.

Also teen girls drowned in Cloud are everywhere.

It’s had the effect on me of feeling like I’m smelling a nasty, overpowering air freshener wherever I go. It’s just bloody everywhere!

Ponderoveryonder · 29/03/2023 14:10

That said, although I can’t stand BR, I love a lot of perfumes by Francis kurkdjian, apparently he’s ‘the nose’ behind Elie Saab le parfum, which is one of my all times faves , reminds me of fresh lilac trees and holidays 🥰

Laiste · 29/03/2023 14:11

Cat wee 😂

I sprayed one of the new celeb fragrances on me the other day - can't remember which one at the mo - but as usual it smelled vile after a while. The woman behind the till even agreed it was awful on me - and they're supposed to be flogging it 😂

DramaAlpaca · 29/03/2023 14:27

Chanel No 5 gives off strong cat wee vibes on me, too. It's stunning on my DM. On the other hand No 19 is amazing on me but horrid on her.

I haven't tried BR but I'm intrigued. I strongly suspect I won't like it as I'm not keen on jasmine, but I'll sample it when I get the opportunity.

I hate jasmine with a passion and love it so definitely have a sniff!

MedievalMadness · 29/03/2023 17:42

I didnt read your OP properly and missed the bit where you said you got a sample of the real thing .

DramaAlpaca · 29/03/2023 17:57

Really, @Rebel2 ? I definitely will!

LaCerbiatta · 29/03/2023 18:26

I have a colleague who wears it and I love it! Just the type of perfume I like. But how can it be everywhere??? It's sooooo expensive! Or is everyone wearing dupes?

And if anyone can please recommend a nice dupes, please let me know!!

Jellywobblescobbles · 29/03/2023 18:45

I love Bacarrat Rouge. The jasmine and amber smell is gorgeous to me. One fragrance that smells terrible on me is Coco Mademoiselle - ughh just awful, like a cheap body spray. It’s so popular aswell.

Banjaxx · 29/03/2023 18:50

I’m with you op, I just get TCP with a dash of air freshener, I bought a sample size bottle and sprayed myself with it, I actually had to run to the bathroom to scrub my wrists, couldn’t get it off quick enough.

EllaPaella · 29/03/2023 19:06

Liked it initially and now everyone is wearing it I find it cloying and sickly. It smells a bit like cigarette smoke mixed with perfume.
