Wedding dress... I didn't think this through

Getting married in a small ceremony this weekend, just me and DP and 4 family members, I've got a dress, long white, feels nice on, but it's too long, even with heels. It's far too late to get it altered, any genius ideas on how I can hold it off the floor so I can actually walk? I've tried googling and cannot find an idea I can make work in the space of 4 days.

Cannot sew to save my life.

Cannot afford another dress.

Feel really bloody stupid now

Actually this is very simple and you could probably manage it yourself

How to sew a loop on a bridal dress

I’d buy a skein of white Anchor, or DMC embroidery floss, HobbyCraft or any good sewing shop will have it.

My wedding dress had a loop in the hem to hold it up, as posted by @Tanktanktank

BreadPittt · 28/03/2023 08:15

Can't help with the dress but hope you have a lovely wedding day.

storminabuttercup · 28/03/2023 08:17

Ooh @Tanktanktank you may have just saved the day. It has a seam down the back and surely even I can manage that!!!!

Can I just say a huge thank you to you all.

Mumsnet at its best.

Unfortunately I can't do a plea, I'm not really telling people about the wedding (that's a long story) but I've reached out to a local seamstress. Worse case I can do the loop thing or even just hold it up.

It feels less of a disaster than it did earlier. Thank you all

100% wundaweb will fix this.

picklemewalnuts · 28/03/2023 08:34

Can you do a link or photo so people can see the fabric?

Also, even if a seamstress can't help, they may have time to advise a hack you do yourself.

storminabuttercup · 28/03/2023 08:46

They don't have the one I bought but it's similar to this, it's not silk at all don't know where my brain was at, it's more chiffonish
The body bit is more fitted below the boob but. But yeah the skirt is like that one

Too long at the front, but you are ok with it dragging on the floor at the back?

I'm wondering about a running stitch up the seams, to make a gather/drape effect.

Awful picture but can't find a better illustration

Sugargliderwombat · 28/03/2023 09:09

Put a plea on a local Facebook group, someone who js great at sewing will hopefully offer

Sugargliderwombat · 28/03/2023 09:11

Sorry just seen your update, just word it that you are in desperate need of someone who can sew and DM them.

YukoandHiro · 28/03/2023 09:12

Try a high street seamstress shop. Where are you based? There's one in most high streets in London. If you say you'll pay a premium someone will sort it there and then

FuckoffeeBeforeCoffee · 28/03/2023 09:13

You could ask for a dress to be altered without posting it's a wedding dress.

Or maybe a mumsnet plea? If you're in the SW, I know my mum could help. Someone on here might be able and willing.

GettingStuffed · 28/03/2023 09:16

Get a bridesmaid, holding your dress up is her job

Brefugee · 28/03/2023 09:16

forgot to say: congratulations, OP, and have fun, even if your dress is a bit long Flowers

Kittylickingplate · 28/03/2023 09:20

That type of hem is easy to shorten. You mark evenly the length to be cut off, trim and then use a zigzag 3 wide, 2 long. It finishes it beautifully. no need to turn and hem.

Iron on wonda web. Or a plea on FB.

Just seconding previous posts!

I was going to suggest wonder web

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 28/03/2023 10:13

Looking at that dress, I don't think wundaweb is an option - not on thin chiffon. It's too see-through. It needs a rolled hem, which is a bit tricky. On the underskirt wundaweb would be fine. Get someone to pin it to the right length for you, then iron the turn-up flat. Put wundaweb in the turn-up and iron it again according to the instructions. You might need to put a tea towel between the skirt and the iron so you don't burn it. Then you only have one layer that is too long and you could either hold that up or get creative with brooches at the waist to pin it up a bit.

storminabuttercup · 28/03/2023 10:39

Update: I have a lady looking at it tomorrow night with the hope she can help!

Phos · 28/03/2023 10:49

I'd probably use hemming tape and do it myself at this stage

Phos · 28/03/2023 10:51

Oh sorry OP I didn't see your update! Good luck!

Flamingolip · 28/03/2023 19:40

Dry cleaners often do alterations. Explain your situation and they’ll prob charge you extra but still, should only take them an hour or so.

diddl · 28/03/2023 19:44

Don't forget to take the shoes that you will be wearing!

Fingers crossed for you!
