Is White Stuff in trouble?

They have a sale of 60% off mainly summery clothes. very early for a sale.

I gave up buying things from them a few years ago as the quality seemed to decline and it all became very sludgy colours and unflattering prints.

Crossed my mind too tbh shame as I used to really like them but I think they’ve lost their way somewhat, quality was great, colours and prints lovely good quality materials etc but now I’d struggle to buy anything looking at their website

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 25/03/2023 11:14

No, just had a look and they've been trying to get rid of that lot for ages. None of the new stuff is on sale as far as I can see.

Schmutter · 25/03/2023 11:36

It deserves to be in trouble as everything in there is gopping.

What's gopping?

I hope they won’t fall, with all those jobs at stake.
But it’s a tough market out there for clothes retailers currently with the cost of living problem, unless they’re either top-end or very cheap…I suspect that many mid-range customers will be making do with what they’ve already got this summer.

LondonLovie · 25/03/2023 12:11

Oh gawd it's terrible. I can't see it lasting very long in the current climate

kickupafuss · 25/03/2023 12:18

I was happy when White Stuff opened a store near me but I hate shopping in there now. The staff always make me feel uncomfortable and I hate having to go through the rails trying to find my size. I end up having to try to find my reading glasses to see the size as it's so small on the label.

Clymene · 25/03/2023 12:21

I haven't bought anything from them since the last top I bought went into holes around the seams after about 3 washes. Cheap fabrics, cheaply made with a massive mark up trading on their previously good reputation.

MissTesseract · 25/03/2023 12:34

ooh now, im not a fan of their styles and never have been, but let's be honest, they make higher quality items much better than the other 90% of the accessible high street. At least you can source cotton, non-lycra'd linen and some leather in there.
People on here often just like to kick something to death, and only when it's gone would you realise it wasn't that fucking bad, compared to all the other shite out there.
I guess it's like a sickness at this point - let's kick a fairly inoffensive store to bits then mope around when it's gone. A very MN cycle I think Grin

As with Fatface and similar brands I believe that their mainstream tat lets them down - the ditsy viscose and polyester frocks, the unflattering blocky knits, etc....but I do think they make acceptable basics, socks and so on, similar to fatface, which are of very decent high street quality in comparison to most.

Agree completely.

Oh I do hope they don't go under.
I love their skirts, cords and coats.

I must admit though that I buy them on eBay.

I doo too and Otrium but there stuff is good quality so I buy full price if I have too.

hippyroses · 25/03/2023 13:57

They have lost their way. I haven't bought anything for years.

woodhill · 25/03/2023 14:01

I still like them

Bought lovely trousers recently but were too long and difficult to shorten and had to go back

Got a shirt yesterday at retail outlet

There is so little out there

KnickerlessParsons · 25/03/2023 14:13

Gopping = absolutely bloody awful.

TeaandCrumpetsforTea · 25/03/2023 14:21

I stopped buying when the quality went down. They are expensive for what they are and I found cardigans tended to 'sag' . Even my DD stopped buying from them in her late 20s for the same reasons.

About 15 years ago they were lovely- beautiful unusual prints for tops and Ts and I could have bought the whole shop.

I just think it has a very 'studenty' look and feel, and the only adult women I know who love it all seem to be in education, as primary teachers.

The tops are too short. The jumpers and cardigans too expensive.
Joules and hush both have sales on atm too.
Think they're just trying to clear old stock rather than going under.

cocksstrideintheevening · 25/03/2023 15:18

The next sale is on too

mrstea301 · 25/03/2023 15:18

They've just opened a shop in our local shopping centre, haven't been in for a look yet but wouldn't have thought they'd be opening new shops if they were in trouble!

AngeloMysterioso · 25/03/2023 15:30

I agree. I actually used to work at Fat Face back in the day, when it was aiming to be a sort of British Quiksilver/Roxy or O’ Neill- a relaxed surf / ski bum aesthetic. White Stuff too- their company name is after white surf on ocean waves; Fat Face is named after a ski slope. They had gorgeous bright prints and colours in summer and their winter stuff was lovely as well - I still have some of the stuff I bought as uniform in 2006 and it’s still going strong! Now whenever I go in either shop it’s just a sea of bland maroon, mustard, beige and brown with the odd navy or dark green thrown in. I can’t remember the last time I bought anything in either shop.

Lo.
im 50+yo, not a teacher but any stretch but I quite like their stuff 😁😁 I’m nit sure what it says about me 😁

But I agree. I have bought mainly jumpers with them and the quality is very variable. I didn’t buy any this year after reading comment after comment on how the jumpers had lost their shape within a couple if washes :(

I hope they will keep going. All of the clothes shops seems to be doing very early sales. They all look like they are struggling tbh.

Definitely agree about the tops and the weird dipped hem jumpers too.

Shortpoet · 25/03/2023 16:23

White Stuff used to be my favourite shop. I always used to find several things in there each visit.
But I agree now, it looks dreary. I remember it’s cool surfer vibes and miss it.

Ishouldbeoutside · 25/03/2023 16:28

Their t shirts used to be such good quality. I have had a whole lot that have lasted years and years. Really well cut and thick cotton. Now they are awful. I don’t buy anything there now. It’s just drab, badly made crap .

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 25/03/2023 16:28

Everyone I know wears WS, it's like an over 50s uniform. I'm fine with that 🤣
