So, following on from earlier posts about house decorating colours influencing clothing choices. I need inspiration!

I've now convinced everyone that after the teens' GCSEs and A levels are over we are all going to have a grand bedroom swap. DS1 is going to uni so he can give up his bigger bedroom to DS2 and have DS2's box room.

DH and I are going to move into the office/teen/sofabed room which has the en-suite, we would really like our own bathroom at last. Our bedroom will become the office/teen/sofabed room.

None of these rooms have been decorated for 8 years so it would be worth painting them all in the process. The teens can choose their own colours, but I'd quite like to take this opportunity to make our bedroom nice.

It's a smaller room than our current bedroom. So we're going to keep the wardrobes, DH's WFH desk and lots of the other clutter in the current bedroom in there and just move the bed and some other furniture.

We want to try and turn the new bedroom into something that looks nice instead of one that houses loads of stuff. Having finally moved away from purple to yellow, orange and green in our living room refurbish last year, I now need ideas for this. I love the new living room, but it cost a lot as we replaced all furniture which was 20 years old as was bought with my ex.

We don't want to spend a fortune again, but at least want new bedside tables, curtains and paint. We also desperately need to replace our 16 year old mattress.

Given I'm not really a floral dress person, I'm not going to be a floral curtain person either. I want something fun and funky with wall colours to match. I'm not doing wallpaper, too much of a pain to remove in the future. I love the idea of a little fuschia chaise longue but it's probably totally impractical for such a small room!

Ideas style people?

Oh gosh @EnoBaby
That's so 2000! I'm older than you but can remember that look so well. I may try and find a peak 80s pic of me!

if it help, in the 70s I was a wanna be hippy.

@kingofchaos, wondering what their sizing is like. I quite like the style of this and it's 100% cotton. I'm not into floral midis but it's a bit more of a retro pattern so maybe it wouldn't make me look like I'm about 80! I'm 10-12, 34D but petite, most often 10 in dresses if my boobs fit, 12 often too baggy at the waist. www.sugarhillbrighton.com/collections/all-dresses/products/raphaela-jersey-dress-dark-green-field-of-daisies#description

kingofchaos · 09/04/2023 11:37

@Netcam sizing is pretty standard..I've lost a stone since the beginning of this year and would say i'm a largish 10 now.

I'm fairly modest of boob though.. my weight is all on my stomach!

kingofchaos · 09/04/2023 11:37

Thank you @countrypunk 😍

Well done for losing a stone, that is fantastic. I lost about half a stone about a year ago and am trying hard to maintain it, so hard post menopause, would like to lose another half but not sure if it will ever happen! Mine is on the boobs, stomach, bottom and thighs!

@Netcam I think some of the people posting photos here have some really lovely bedrooms! Like @kingofchaos for example, looks fun and funky to me!
Here are a couple of my ideas of what looks "fun", however I'm not sure whether this is what you are looking for.

Our house is a new built, we couldn't choose the design and it has this typical white and grey wallpaper in all of the rooms. I wasn't very happy when I saw that out living room is mostly grey, but I've found some lovely turquoise curtains and went on to add splashes of turquoise and gold accessories with wall art, cushions, little pieces of furniture (like our new small triceratops chair for resting your legs on) and I think it turned out quite nicely despite grey still being very much present there.
I'm planning to work on on our cabinet next (the room where I take outfit photos), all the furniture there is random, in different styles etc., so we are planning to at least replace the furniture there. Will probably have to go with the white colour, I'm not a huge fan of the white furniture, but after various simulations I think that's what will work best in that room.

Playground outfit today for running after DD. I've also went to try on a couple of things in the nearby H&M and left with a bright green cap (caps are absolute life saviors! the sun is so strong already!), a pink jacket and a t-shirt

@toucaninjapan, I love those first two photos with the yellow sofa and the blue sofa with cats, definitely fun. Here are some pics of our living room refurb a year or so ago to get the idea of what we like.

More pics. Our house was newbuild too, well 11 years old now. The living room is quite small and on the 1st floor. But it's the only room we've actually designed, planned and got new furniture specifically to fit. Everywhere else has ancient stuff we've managed to find a place for.

One more pic, from before we'd got the bespoke oak table top made for our hybrid sit/stand desk/table in the corner.

That dress looks lovely on you @doglover90

That's the stuff of dreams @kingofchaos ! I want to make a dreamy room like this for DD too (I was thinking more like Paris chic, pink merry-go-rounds prints and so on. Or a jungle theme maybe), but DH is against choosing any design until DD can voice her own opinion about it. I think I'll change his mind though after we'd be done with buying the furniture for the 1st floor.

@Netcam love that room, so cosy! Do you prefer geometrical prints?

Netcam · 09/04/2023 14:53

@toucaninjapan, yes, prefer geometric or flat abstract type prints. Love the pink dining room picture though.

DH has been almost convinced I think that we could get some new furniture. Really would like to not have the stuff bought with my ex in our bedroom forever, especially since most of it has been moved around so much it is rather dented and worn looking.

We do have 2 wardrobes like this that we bought together when DH moved in. We have now decided we could fit them in the new bedroom if we can actually get them downstairs with the help of my teens.

www.marksandspencer.com/l/furniture/bedroom?filter=Collection%3DSonoma&originalPrice=80%2C1680

And we are thinking we could get the bedside tables and a chest of drawers and tallboy from the same series which should also fit, although we need to have a proper measure of the room to be sure. It would be nice to have bedroom furniture that matches for once.

We realised there is no way a chaise longue will fit, that was a ridiculous fantasy. But at least we could have all of our clothes in our bedroom rather than half of them upstairs in the office.

We also have 3 sets of these organic cotton sheets and duvet covers (see picture) in a kind of pale silver/blue that we really like so do not intend to replace them.

That gives a kind of base of colours and wood tones (the bed frame is also oak). So we could add the funky bits with curtains, paint colours and lampshades. I like natural fabrics, so for curtains would go for cotton probably with blackout liners. It's one big French door to a Juliet Balcony like the living room has.

I always get our paint from Lakeland Paints as they are non toxic and really good quality. So would choose paint colours from their range:

Bless you @netcam, I'm sure that you look lovely in trousers too. There are so many types of trousers available now, it is a bit overwhelming isn't it? By the way, Your mustard yellow outfit the other day was so well put together. You looked very stylish.

Your top with the stripes is so fun @kingofchaos , and today's dress too! Happy birthday! 🥳

Very impressed. Not sure I would be happy to totally give it up, but I don't drink that much. DH and I share a bottle of wine over 2 nights at weekends. But I try hard to stick to my allowance of half a bottle a week. We used to sometimes have a midweek half bottle to share but I've given that up.

Netcam · 09/04/2023 19:54

@toucaninjapan, found some curtains I like that are blackout and the right size for our Juliet Balcony. I refuse to pay a fortune for made to measure curtains, I've never found them worth it. But these look good:

Thoughts?
Don't want to get too matchy matchy, prefer eclectic look. Maybe some orange accent colours in lampshades/pillowcases.
Wall colour? Would like a bit of colour rather than the neutral we have in the living room. But not blue. Something different.
