when I get products wrong, my hair becomes Frizz central… it’s never frizz free but at the moment it’s ridiculous.

what will help????

I’ve been using umberto giannini banana shampoo which I think isn’t working. I’m using various random deep conditioning conditioners which aren’t helping!

worst of all I don’t have a reliable smoothing/frizz-reducing styling product.

Please no curly girl reccs, sorry!! Have tried it and it DOES NOT work for me at all.

I just want something that will stop me looking like I’ve stuck my finger in the mains 😩

Oh sorry, should have said… my hair is fine-medium, there is MASSES OF IT though which can give impression it’s incredibly thick but it’s actually not thick in texture. kind of wavy in parts, straighter in others and curlier in others. It is VERY VERY DIFFICULT HAIR. Frizz is out of control.

It’s just below shoulder length, long layers. (To reduce mushroom/bouffy effect)

Have you tried any of the products by cantu? They are available at Superdrug

tatteddear · 22/03/2023 12:11

Brazilian blow dry/keratin straightening. Changed my life. Failing that I use john Frieda frizz ease shampoo and kerastase serum which whilst spendy lasts absolutely ages as you don't need much at all .

The biggest helper I have doing however is switching to a silk pillow case. I was sceptical about them but it's made a huge difference to my hair

MindatWork · 22/03/2023 12:12

Are you putting the product on when your hair is still wet OP? My hair is really low-porosity and I find if I put product on when it's even semi-dry it just 'sits' on top and I still get frizz.

If I put it on straight out of the shower when my hair is still sopping wet it's much better.

Eranzer · 22/03/2023 12:15

Hadn't heard of the shampoo, just had a google and saw that it's silicone and sulphate free. I personally would recommend something that does contain those ingredients in your case.

You'd probably benefit from a leave in conditioner and a serum too. John Freida Frizz Ease range - can't go wrong with any of their products, they do what they say on the tin!

murasaki · 22/03/2023 12:19

You have my hair. I am taking notes...it's a nightmare.

TheDogsMother · 22/03/2023 12:20

John Frieda Frizz Ease Shampoo and Conditioner/Depp Conditioner plus Charles Worthington Leave in Conditioner while hair is still pretty wet. Hair oils/serums/creams between washes and Philip Kingsley Elasticizer for weekly/fortnightly treatments.

ScreenPrinting · 22/03/2023 12:20

Thanks so much!!

i haven’t used JF for decades but only because I think I used to over-do it and go a bit greasy… might try it again, it’s affordable to try!!

which kerastase serum do you use tatteddear…?

good reminder about the pillowcase! I have one but haven’t used it for ages.

cantu seemed to make my hair very lank, sort of like it was too rich if that makes sense? It’s the problem of not actually having thick hair. Though it is quite dry.

Ditto to that!

ScreenPrinting · 22/03/2023 12:22

It’s rubbish, isn’t it murasaki???

dogsmother, any particular oils/serums you would use between washes? I’ve been using the (pricey!!!) Olaplex oil for that job but it’s not helping (if anything it’s making it worse…)

OP posts:
ScreenPrinting · 22/03/2023 12:23

MindAtWork, yep, I put product onto sopping wet hair… I think my hair is quite low porosity too…

Was it full on curly girl or "wavy girl" that you've tried? I've recently joined a UK Wavy Girl group on FB and I did try that shampoo and it really wasn't for me but they have loads of recommendations.
I stopped using silicones a couple of weeks ago and my hair is still a bit frizzy but it feels SO much better and less like it's coated in something horrible.

DysonBison · 22/03/2023 12:27

I agree with applying any product to soaking wet hair, especially if your hair is fine. Aveda Be Curly, It's a 10 Coily Cream and Ouai curl cream all manage to keep the frizz at bay for my fine curls.

I must have tried ALL the curl creams over the years - there are lots of different types of curly hair and most products are too heavy/moisturising for me.

ScreenPrinting · 22/03/2023 12:36

Sorry I might be being dim… when you say soaking wet, does that mean LITERALLY straight from the shower, before even using microfibre turban (my alternative to towel drying!!)?? If so, do you put the product on and THEN use microfibre towel to blot?
im using the microfibre towel before I put the product on which may not count as soaking wet…

John Freda Frizz Ease conditioner was amazing for me. Have long thick hair prone to ridiculous frizz at certain times.

murasaki · 22/03/2023 12:41

@ScreenPrinting totally rubbish. I try all sorts of conditioner and serums, and it just doesn't work. Sauing that, I air dry and maybe should use an actual hairdryer

My3cents1 · 22/03/2023 12:46

Ooh lord it’s expensive but the one product that always works for my hair is Oribe Supershine cream. Original or light version. I ugly cry each time I have to purchase but it is really that good and smells wonderful

DryIce · 22/03/2023 12:50

Your hair sounds similar to mine - I use cantu kids leave in conditioner after a shower and air dry. I towel it a bit so as it isn't dripping but it's pretty wet still when I apply

sallydoodlecat · 22/03/2023 13:44

I do follow the curly girl method loosely. Won't give tips from that but would recommend Only Curls products. And yes to putting gel or mousse on soaking wet hair and really squish it in. I do this in the shower. and then use a micro fibre towel to scrunch out the excess. Feels like a waste of product but it's way better for frizz.

WhereAreWeNow · 22/03/2023 13:47

I'm a fellow frizzy and my favourite product is Living Proof 5-in-1 cream.

Tara336 · 22/03/2023 14:27

One part of my hair at the back always has been frizzy and sticks out at an angle, Brazilian blow dry fixed it and have no problem now

scoobycute · 22/03/2023 14:30

Color Wow Dream Coat

To be sprayed to damp hair section by section very liberally. Then it is sealed by heat from blow drying.

Very smooth, soft hair, no frizz. Lasts 2-3 washes. Worth the money. Kind of like an "at home" Brazilian treatment but gentle and kind to the hair.

Be very wary of Brazilian blowouts, I've had many in varying degrees over the years and some actually cause more damage and are more of a "relaxing" treatment like a person with Afro type hair might get. They aren't supposed to "grow out" but rather fade/wash out over time. Mine have always grown out leaving strange curly/frizzy roots with limp straight ends. I wouldn't recommend..even the most legitimate ones!!

SmokyForTheWin · 22/03/2023 14:37

I have very similar hair. Cantu is terrible on me.
Apparently hard water is worse for our hair types.
I'm feeling 'relatively' happy with my hair at the moment. I'm using Aveda Nutriplenish shampoo & conditioner, with Frizz Ease on wet (not soaking, but wetter than damp, iyswim) hair left to dry naturally. I use quite a lot of frizz ease on the worst bits.

SmokyForTheWin · 22/03/2023 14:38

Aveda isn't cheap, unfortunately.

Sparkletastic · 22/03/2023 14:46

Another vote for Aveda Be Curly. I tend to apply it once I've had a towel turban on for a few minutes and it works well on my fine curls. Might try it on still dripping wet hair next wash though.
