ive just bought this dress for a wedding in July but now I’m having second thoughts.
it looked all floaty and romantic in the changing room but now I’m wondering if it looks like a nighty? Now I’ve got that thought in my head I can’t get rid of it!
what do you think pls?

I agree that it's a bit much. It needs toughening up a bit. Lose the ribbon belt and put a wide belt of some kind on it. It would also look better in a less flouncy colour.

EmmaGrundyForPM · 21/03/2023 20:52

Being brutally honest, it doesn't look like a nightie but it does look like a pair of curtains from a very downmarket B&B in the 80s.

It does absolutely nothing for you.

Bearpawk · 21/03/2023 21:05

It doesn't look like a nightie at all! If you like it then wear it x

neonjumper · 21/03/2023 21:06

You have a great figure but the dress is very dated , it wouldn't look out of place in the 1980,s with a floral hat on the tilt .

Something a bit more fitted and less fussy would look great on you .

Capricornone1 · 21/03/2023 20:22

how old are you OP?

I'm 60

atthebottomofthehill · 21/03/2023 21:22

I think that unfortunately the dress on a 25 year old would look romantic but on a woman over 45 it just looks dated. Could you find something more modern/classic? You clearly have a great figure and could choose loads of things

Holliejollie22 · 21/03/2023 21:33

I’m not a fan. It’s hard to tell from the photo but from what I can see I’m wondering if the colour is right for you.

MapleSyrupSweet · 22/03/2023 06:52

It's quite old fashioned op.
But if you like it, go for it!

Being brutally honest, the style isn't flattering nor showing off your body well, and the pattern is like an 80's floral duvet.

If you are more comfortable in jeans, what about a jumpsuit instead? With a belt to accentuate your waist?

If you like the dress, maybe a better, more uplifting bra will add curves and shape, and make it sit better.

Perhaps the op doesn't want to show off her body?

It's perfect for a wedding OP, when the weather changes it'll seem better,it's because it's miserable at the moment. Nothing like a nightie at all!

sarahh96 · 23/03/2023 07:20

Thanks all for your comments. This is the second dress I've bought now for this wedding, I just can't settle on one. Bit fed up tbh, I've got quite a low self esteem and having to wear a dress, which I'm not used to, isn't helping. Ho hum, whose going to be looking anyway! All eyes will be on the lovely bride.

Candleabra · 23/03/2023 07:28

you don’t have to wear a dress. What would you feel more comfortable wearing?

Starseeed · 23/03/2023 07:31

I think it looks fine - better when I clicked to open your photo properly! Not amazing but not like a nightie at all. You could add a hot pink or other bright coloured handbag and fascinator or shoes to make it more modern.

I think that if you are unsure, you should return it and keep looking. How long do you have until the wedding?

Tbh it isn't about how we think it looks on you, its is about how you feel in it.

I think it would be better for you to buy/wear something that there is a chance you could wear again, rather than buy just for this one event to get through the day.

Do you have someone who can go shopping with you? If I am alone and unsure I will ask random people in the change room or the assistant what they think. But then I am abroad and people here can be brutally honest so that is sometimes a good thing....

I think it's very frumpy tbh. I find short sleeves generally very inelegant.

What is inelegant about short sleeves? Confused

sarahh96 · 23/03/2023 07:37

@Candleabra normally I live in jeans. I'm an Apple shape so I find that jeans hold me in. I did think about some nice trousers but by the time I've bought those, and a top to go with them, I would be well over budget

wandawaves · 23/03/2023 07:40

It doesn't look like a nightie but it does look like something an 80 year old would wear. Sorry.

sarahh96 · 23/03/2023 07:41

@isthismylifenow I've got 3 weeks. I can't ask my friends anymore, they're fed up with hearing about it and so is my husband.
Im afraid I can't return it now as labels and all packaging has gone in the bin.
Im thinking about altering it, taking it in a bit at the bust etc.

Hallmark1234 · 23/03/2023 07:43

I wouldn't bat an eyelid if I saw you in that dress at a summer wedding. It's a nice dress, if not overly exciting and I might wear the same (a bit older than you), as I have no need to stand out, but want to be comfortable and look the part for the occassion.

A pashmina/wrap would compliment it though.

sarahh96 · 23/03/2023 07:44

This is how it's supposed to look!

This dress
SomePeopleAreJustBloodyStupid · 23/03/2023 07:45

It's very fussy and old-ladyish. I'm almost 64 and wouldn't wear it

sarahh96 · 23/03/2023 07:47

@Hallmark1234 thank you x

Justyouwaitandseeagain · 23/03/2023 08:00

I think you look lovely. I thought you were younger than 60 from your picture. Your décolletage, arms and hair all look great.
the dress looks pretty and appropriate for a wedding, loose enough that you don't need to worry about eating or dancing.
do you have a jacket you could wear with it? Or a brighter pink scarf/pashmina/fascinator to add a bit of extra colour?

Gridhopper · 23/03/2023 08:02

You look lovely OP! Every single person on this thread will have a different opinion about what a nice wedding outfit is. It doesn’t looks like a nightie in any way, or a dress for an 80 year old. Looks pretty and easy to wear, not too self-conscious making/restrictive for someone used to jeans. I’d say stop stressing about it - you’ve got your outfit, chill about that and enjoy the day.

sarahh96 · 23/03/2023 08:05

@Justyouwaitandseeagain oh thank you. Yes I have got a scarf etc that I can wear too.
I must admit that the dress is slightly larger than I am for the very reason you say. The next size down fitted but I would have had to wear shapewear under it, which would have been sooo hot once I started thrashing about on the dance floor 🤣

Donehere · 23/03/2023 08:06

I think it's perfectly acceptable OP, while you could probably find better if you wanted to spend more time looking.

I would try it with a different color shoe (nude or darker neutral/metallic, or something bright) and tying the tie directly to the back so it doesn't cut you in half could make it look more elegant?
