What should I wear with this dress?

Hi, can anyone help me style this dress? I'm thinking of a pashmina in a Lilac colour? I haven't a clue tbh. Should I go for nude shoes? I have silver shoes already, and a raspberry handbag? I don't want to wear a cover up with sleeves as the sleeves on the dress are big and would be bulky under something like that. Thanks so much

What ever are you hoping to style it for? What's your usual style or what are you aiming for with this?

A bit more info and I'm sure lots of people will have ideas

Ever = event

I am not a fashionista, but are pashminas not a bit dated? How about some sort of cape?

WashableVelvet · 21/03/2023 10:12

Not a pashmina. Blazer would have enough structure for the sleeves not to add bulk? Otherwise an invisible layer underneath for warmth instead of a layer on top.

Naughty1205 · 21/03/2023 10:17

Thanks all. It's for a Confirmation. Didn't realise pashminas were out of fashion. Is a shawl much the same? Something just to drape over my shoulders really.
Didn't think of a blazer, actually. I suppose a cropped one? I'm size 10/12 and 5 foot 7. The dress is quite flouncy so not sure a longer length blazer would work but then I live in jeans and not great at styling for these occasions. Thanks for your ideas!

Great dress.

A black wrap would be fine - or silver. A lilac pashmina would look dated - sorry.

Blazers can look amazing over dresses but also really frumpy - it's all in the exact cut and length.

Personally I would steer clear of the raspberry handbag - tonally, it would be fine, but it will look at bit Children's TV Presenter against the purple. I'd go with a neutral.

You don't want to be too matchy-matchy with accessories, but a metallic wrap and your silver shoes, plus a black bag, could work. Or match the shoes and bag but go with a black shawl.

Just saw your update that it's for a confirmation, rather than evening. In that case, I would go with an overcoat or trench if you have a smart one (churches generally being quite cold) and neutral shoes. If you have a blazer that works over it, that would be perfect if there is a celebration lunch or similar afterwards. If you don't have the right blazer, a black or beigy wrap would be fine.

Naughty1205 · 21/03/2023 10:43

Thanks so much, that's all very helpful!

Re-thinking the raspberry handbag, if it's small and you have a neutral overcoat, it could work, because the block of neutral will balance it out. But I would steer clear if it's a larger bag.

It's a lovely small bag, thanks for that

Could you get a fine wool or viscose wrap the same colour as the dress ? Osprey have them in loads of colours, especially if you can get to an outlet. You may well need a warm coat as well though but the wrap could double up as a scarf then. Shoes and bag could be neutral, navy or a deep blue rather than black.

Absolutely the opposite. Pashmina or shawl is far easier with those sleeves.

I don't know what MN means by a "blazer" It seems to be the answer to everything- just makes me think of school uniform or Henley Regatta.

Pashmina, shawl, wrap, call it what you like are not out of fashion and even if they were they are often the most practical solution.

A wrap over that dress at worst will have someone telling you it's "not on trend" but a wrap won't hide, or direct from, the dress.

There's far more scope for getting the famous MN " blazer" wrong (more than getting it right) and it hides and detracts from the dress.

I’ve got no idea the difference between a pashmina, a shawl or a wrap.

There isn't any, other than I suppose a pashmina might be at least partly cashmere.

Avarua2 · 21/03/2023 17:56

I would wear a camisole or warm layer underneath instead of a shawl or pashmina or jacket. Silver shoes sound nice.

Naughty1205 · 21/03/2023 18:11

Thanks everyone! Interesting, I had googled what the difference is between a pashmina, shawl, scarf etc. Not much difference except maybe in size and shape, but they all pretty much drape over the shoulders and neck! I will definitely look at the idea of the same colour scarf from Ospreys, thanks for that!

Yeah, 'pashmina' has got a technical definition about what it's made from, but I think most people just use it to mean a wrap. Wraps never completely go out of fashion but a pastel wrap with a dark dress would have an early 2000s vibe.
Getting one in the same colour as your dress is a great idea, though.

Naughty1205 · 22/03/2023 13:02

Thanks for the link, I have something similar in black, just not sure if it's too heavy with the dress Confused

I think the big poncho would be a bit less twee than a typical 'pashmina' type shawl. Easy to bung on over jeans and t shirt as well.

NatashaDancing · 22/03/2023 13:25

Laiste · 22/03/2023 13:21

Sorry but that's awful.

Laiste · 22/03/2023 13:26

do you think?

i thought it looked quite nice. warm and not too twee ...

MorrisZapp · 22/03/2023 13:29

I wore a pashmina once to a wedding, I looked like I had been evacuated from my hotel and had grabbed a sheet on my way out.

Quite handy for the limbo dance later on though.
