Another is this appropriate for a wedding..

Going to a wedding soon, I’ve just bought this dress, however we have now received official invites. It states: dress code, formal. No white dresses.

Now I would never wear white to someone else’s wedding, but formal? Can someone advise? Is my dress suitable or not?

Doesn't look formal to me, looks more like a summer dress. Sorry OP.

dontdoiiiit · 20/03/2023 16:07

But I'd say that is white.
It's definitely not formal either sorry.

BadForBusiness · 20/03/2023 16:08

Too short.

EspeciallyDedicated · 20/03/2023 16:08

It's not what I'd call formal either, too floral and floaty. It's nice though.

Sussyknowsthemeaningoflife · 20/03/2023 16:09

Not formal

Justforlaffs · 20/03/2023 16:09

It’s so difficult to say as everyone’s idea of formal will be different! I’d say it’s perfectly nice for a summer wedding but if it’s a formal affair probably not posh enough.

Rauha · 20/03/2023 16:09

No, it isn't formal.

UWhatNow · 20/03/2023 16:09

No - it looks like a dress you’d wear as a beach cover up.

MuddyFeet01 · 20/03/2023 16:11

It’s not formal and it’s mostly white.

SavBlancTonight · 20/03/2023 16:12

It's not formal and it's white. Why are you even asking if it can be worn? (and how sad that the bride felt the need to specify "no white". My mother would be horrified!)

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 20/03/2023 16:13

That's not formal. It kind of looks pale blue but if she has said no white and formal then it doesn't meet the dress code.

greenspaces4peace · 20/03/2023 16:13

Too casual, too white. No from me

Jellycats4life · 20/03/2023 16:14

It’s a perfectly nice wedding guest dress but not formal enough, unfortunately.

Thisisnotmyname2022 · 20/03/2023 16:20

Pic isn’t very clear, it’s definitely not white, it’s pale blue, little darker than the Manchester City blue.

I had bought the dress before the official invite arrived so wasn’t aware there would be a formal code, they don’t seem the type to do formal, I wasn’t sure whether their version of formal was just not white..

The dress also doesn’t sit as short on me as I’m not blessed with height 😂.

Thanks for the advice though, I’ll see if I am still able to return the dress.

Lovely dress for a summer holiday, but too casual and too short for a formal wedding. Sorry.

Thisisnotmyname2022 · 20/03/2023 16:25

The bride isn’t wearing white herself, she’s wearing red and green, I avoided those two colours as that’s what she said she would be wearing, also again, would never wear white to someone else’s wedding.

Thats why I am so thrown by the “formal” comment, it is very much not a formal wedding.

Too casual

Luckingfovely · 20/03/2023 16:29

Sorry, I agree with others, it's not right on any count - too pale, too casual.

EspeciallyDedicated · 20/03/2023 16:43

It would be fine for the sort of wedding where everyone is outdoors, festival vibe etc, but too casual for a traditional venue.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 20/03/2023 16:43

Does not meet the dress code at all! It is white and it's not formal!

I agree. Floaty and beachy, nice enough dress but not definitely not ‘formal’.

Most of the guides online are US based but generally ‘Formal’ is one step down from ‘Proper Posh’ (so somewhere around minor celeb on the BAFTA red carpet, rather than royal fam at a state banquet).

Most summer time British weddings are, imo ‘Semi formal’ so I’d probably check how posh the venue is before buying something truly ‘formal’!

It is the very opposite of formal!

What’s the venue like?

Any idea how posh/matching the chaps in wedding party are going to be?

That’s usually a good tell as to how formal something truly is!

WhoAmIWhoAmI24601 · 20/03/2023 16:48

I can’t believe you need to ask tbh.

Eqs · 20/03/2023 16:51

I’m afraid I also agree that it’s not formal (def a beach cover up vibe and too short) and actually, it may have a pattern on it but it’s still very (too!!) white. Sorry op, I think you def need to find another dress. And if the dress code is stated on the invite it won’t just be the bridal party rolling their eyes!
