Dress me for Rome in the summer please

We’ll mainly be doing the more ancient ruins/general sight seeing than the religious parts so not limited by covered knees and shoulders. I do have a Kemi Telford sundress than covers both so I can take that for any such occasion.

Approx size 10 and short. Not very confident in shorts and don’t really want to have to think about strapless bras.

WWYW (what would you wear)?

Wide legged trousers, t shirts. Comfy trainers.

I did but it felt a bit more beachy/by the pool rather than city break. I’ll take another look in case I’ve misremembered.

I do have some smart but jersey wide leg crops. I’ll look closer to the time to see if it’s be too hot for wide leg denim drops but have those in my wardrobe already too.

I'd be in cotton skirts and vest tops, or cotton or linen dresses, with Birkenstocks. I've had a summer holiday in Rome and it was boiling. I find any kind of trousers far too hot in that climate. Cool, comfortable footwear would also be a priority.

RampantIvy · 19/03/2023 20:23

You will do a lot of walking in Romw, so prioritise comfortable footwear.
There are a lot of churches worth visiting so you will need something to cover your shoulders.

I would wear cool floaty summer dresses or linen dresses.

atthebottomofthehill · 19/03/2023 20:31

If wearing skirts or dresses and doing lots of walking may need to consider some breathable chubrub shorts - I have the ones from marks. I'm not overweight but my thighs touch and when it's hot they get sore if I walk far

I agree - quite hard to distinguish general sight seeing from the religious in Rome so always be ready to have shoulders covered etc.

Doublefacedcottonwoolpads · 19/03/2023 20:34

If you go to Vatican city you'll need to cover up.

MinnesotaMuffin · 19/03/2023 20:41

I have visited Rome several times in the height of summer. You will want to have the option to visit the churches because they are a lovely cool place to sit and to get out of the heat. The artwork in the churches is really not to be missed, even if you aren’t religious it is amazing to see.

If you don’t want to wear shorts then floaty, cotton midi or maxi dresses or skirts and vest tops with a loose cotton shirts / blouses to cover shoulders will be good. You will be too hot in trousers, even loose linen ones. You’ll be glad of a hat and sunglasses too.

There’s some fairly decent travel wear in Cotswold outdoor stores for city breaks to hot places. Royal Robbins is excellent quality and Cotswold tend to have their stuff in the sales.

But as others have said, really comfy footwear is key. I wear some walking sandals that I dig out each year for Rome that I have great faith in. They aren’t the height of fashion but neither are they too fugly.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 19/03/2023 21:16

Zara and M&S both good for loose thin cotton dresses in the summer.

Mum2jenny · 19/03/2023 21:21

Thin cotton dress, underwear optional.

When I was last in Rome, it was mega hot and my knickers were rubbing me a lot. Needless to say, I discarded them and was much more comfortable. I’m guessing but it does depend when you are visiting.

We visited in August…

SirChenjins · 19/03/2023 21:26

The amount of walking you will do (up and down hills!) cannot be overstated - we walked many, many miles in our few days there. I took Birkenstocks and another pair of sandals but they weren’t comfy enough and I ended up swapping them for comfy trainers - I was past caring by that point. Loose fitting, very lightweight trousers and casual lightweight cotton shirt dresses got me through it - Rome is full of tourists all dressed for many hours of sightseeing each day, don’t think for a moment you need to dress for anything else! Enjoy - it’s a beautiful city.

Merrilydancing · 19/03/2023 21:42

This caught my eye in Next today and at the time I thought it would be perfect for a city break in summer-

Also, last year Zara had some lovely pastel linen shirts which would be perfect as a cover up so hopefully they will bring these back for this year.

holidaytimeatlast · 19/03/2023 21:47

Think about bags too. And how to carry water. You need to hydrate often with heat and walking. We took metal vacuum bottles with insulated sleeves and topped up with chilled water bottles from shops through the day. Having chilled water on us all day was divine.

fruitbrewhaha · 19/03/2023 21:49

It will be roasting. Floaty cotton knee length dresses. And more floaty dresses for the evening. You won’t want to wear trousers.

FettleOfKish · 19/03/2023 21:51

We were in Rome last July, and it was absolutely stinking hot, too hot to do a lot of walking around really, but long flowing skirts, loose tops and flowing maxi dresses were more comfortable than shorts & vests or t-shirts.

A light pashmina rolled up in my bag was fine for visiting churches.

This. And trainers or EXTREMELY comfortable sandals for walking. And a sun hat for most of the sites.

AnnaMagnani · 19/03/2023 21:59

It will be hot and 99% of people will look a state so I wouldn't let that bit worry you.

First - comfortable shoes, most people we saw were in walking sandals. I v much wished I had these and my smart shoes didn't make it out of the suitcase.

Second - light natural fibres. If you are in any way prone to chub rub then avoid skirts.

Finally - if you are going in any churches you will need your shoulders covered and they may object to shorts as well. The Vatican makes a fortune on selling shawls to unwary travellers. My ancient pashmina was ideal and got a lot of use.

Fun fact for a Sunday evening- there’s free water right across the city www.wantedinrome.com/news/nasoni-romes-free-drinking-fountains.html

AnnaMagnani · 19/03/2023 22:27

I forgot that in my post. One of the joys of Rome was not having to lug heavy water bottles about as there is fresh water everywhere.

FettleOfKish · 19/03/2023 22:35

Second the above about everyone looking a state if it's high summer. We were there for a wedding and no matter how fabulous everyone looked in their air-conditioned hotels, by the time we'd got to the venue everyone looked sweaty, dishevelled and uncomfortable Blush

We only have one picture of DH & I in our wedding guest finery and it'll never see the light of day because we look like a couple of radishes who fell into a river on their way to the radish ball.

We're back there for another wedding next year and thank god it's in May this time.

Just came back from four days in Rome and the temperature was in the high 60s, with three glorious sunny days, so just like we hope our summers are! Definitely good robust trainers, with a change of socks when really hot, as the cobbles do for your feet and knees. Clothing, something that flows, does not rubs and ensures you survive the heat of the day. We did 34 miles walking whilst there and even though March, it was hot enough for us and having visited in August previously, comfort is the way to go, as then it gets very warm indeed! We saw everything from shorts, cropped tops, track bottoms, jeans, to the Italians in their overcoats and hats last week!

RampantIvy · 20/03/2023 15:10

I hope not. I would like it to be T-shirt weather at least, so 24 - 25 degrees will do me. Are you American? It was 21 degrees when we went to Rome at the end of October.
