We’ll mainly be doing the more ancient ruins/general sight seeing than the religious parts so not limited by covered knees and shoulders. I do have a Kemi Telford sundress than covers both so I can take that for any such occasion.

Approx size 10 and short. Not very confident in shorts and don’t really want to have to think about strapless bras.

WWYW (what would you wear)?

I think culottes are great abapid the chub rub and be wafty and cool. New look do loads in cotton. I look for pockets too for sightseeing.

Teva sandals are great for walking z. Selection of loose cotton vests t shirts and shirts.

What did you wear in the uk heatwave last year if you had to go out?

Viscose and cotton are the best fabrics so avoid any polyester, jersey. I find racer back better than strappy and I just wear a regular bra (maybe I'm a slatter!)

I'd take

5 skirts/ culottes/ shorts
5 tops
3 maxi / midi / mini dresses
1 Trainers
1 walking sandal (tevas)
1 leather sandal ( saltwaters)
1 small nylon rucksack for day time
1 cross body bag for night
1 insulated water flask

That's 8 outfits for day an night just mix and match

Keep a flannel in you bag back for radish moments! A dab on the brow or a cold flannel on the neck is quit the tonic.

Nothing to do with S&P but ensure you get a drinks menu before you order. I had a very cheap pizza nd extortionately priced Coke Zero! Lesson learnt!

It will be hot. Very hot. Natural fabrics, nothing tight, and comfortable shoes for a lot of walking. I would go for some sort of trainer so you can loosen laces if your feet swell. It gets very crowded so I would avoid open toed sandals!

We were in Rome last July, and it was absolutely stinking hot, too hot to do a lot of walking around really, but long flowing skirts, loose tops and flowing maxi dresses were more comfortable than shorts & vests or t-shirts.

A light pashmina rolled up in my bag was fine for visiting churches.

I was also in Rome last July and you’re not wrong! I did 120,000 steps in 6 days wearing Skechers flip flops. I bought them on the Via Del Corso on the first day and they were ridiculously comfortable to walk in. Hat and sunglasses are vital and a light scarf/pashmina to cover shoulders where required. I spent the whole week in light mid-length dresses because even shorts and a vest top were intolerably hot. Ice cold water is cheap and plentiful.

I thought I’d died and gone to heaven when I visited Castel Sant’Angelo on the third day. A mausoleum is the perfect place to cool down, apparently 😂

Add to my list: the comfiest trainers you own!

Fun fact for a Sunday evening- there’s free water right across the city www.wantedinrome.com/news/nasoni-romes-free-drinking-fountains.html

We loved finding those fountains, there was even one in St Peters if I recall. Also loved looking for the Barberini bees, once your eye gets accustomed to them you spot them everywhere. They are not real bees btw.

I suppose if you have no choice about timings you must go in August, but otherwise WHY???? Not comfortable, crowded, sweaty, too hot to enjoy anything, miserable IMV. I would never choose that month for holidays anywhere, and I don't understand how people can tolerate the heat. Maybe I'm doing something wrong but I'd pass out for sure or not move from an air conditioned room.

RampantIvy · 20/03/2023 15:49

I saw so many people in Skechers when we went to Rome. I simply couldn't imagine doing all that sightseeing in 30+ degree heat though.

Churches are great for diving into after the heat and bright sunlight.

Light, loose cut knee length summer dresses with a boat neck or similar. Flat comfy shoes, take a folding sunhat, sunglasses.

Its hot. Have a great time.

SpamIAm · 20/03/2023 16:00

Comfortable footwear should be your top priority. I attempted to wear flimsy sandals out for dinner once and stuck with my trainers for the rest of the weekend.

It would be a shame to miss out on the churches (I'm not religious but they're really impressive inside). I was mostly in shorts and strappy tops (it was April and HOT) so I carried a thin scarf that I could wrap around like a skirt and a very thin cardi to cover my shoulders at all times.

Having done several Italian holidays in summer I can let you know what works for me.

Rome is hot in summer, very hot, at lots of the historic sites there is very little shade and the sun reflects back from the stone so be prepared for the heat.

For the forums, colosseum, Palatine Hill, it is gritty, dusty and uneven underfoot.

You will walk miles, comfy supportive footwear is the number one priority. Birkenstocks worked well for me, sketchers nearly ruined the holiday as they lacked support. Sturdy sandals or trainers are best depending upon your preference. Have more than one pair so you can rotate.

Good sunglasses are essential. Consider a hat too.

Rome is touristy enough that no one will judge you wearing shorts, cropped trousers or whatever. There will be lots of Americans in shorts to just above the knee with trainers and sports socks, a baseball cap and a t-shirt so don't worry too much about being as stylish as the Italians.

Linen trousers are good. Shorts are ok but not for religious sites, go for longer ones so you don't have bare legs on hot seats. A light floaty sleeveless top feels better than a tight vest.

I find dresses best all round. I look for lightweight fabric, fairly loose fitting, with enough coverage to wear a normal bra. I don't worry about shoulders showing because I don't burn easily and pop a silk scarf or cotton sarong in my bag for any religious places. You might prefer shoulder coverage to protect your shoulders from burning. I wear thin chub rub shorts underneath. I feel more put together in a dress too.

Avoid jumpsuits due to going to the loo.

Take a reusable water bottle and refill it at the fountains, they are all drinking water.

Go for a cross body bag or one that tucks under your arm and one that fastens properly. Pickpockets can be an issue.

Notegoat · 20/03/2023 16:16

A folding straw or hemp sunhat that fits in your bag is handy. Walking around in direct sun when it’s over 30 is no fun. Good walking sandals that you’ve tested and compeed blister patches in your bag.

My hair goes sweaty and frizzy in the heat so when it’s going to be that hot during the day I wet my hair, towel dry it then work something like a leave in conditioner through it to hold and protect it. I stick it in a low bun (at my neck) and let it finish drying like that. It stays put and looks really neat. For the evening you just have to shampoo it well and you get really shiny hair!

I go for dresses because I get sweaty and shorts would look like I’d wet myself. The glamour.

Extra hot yes, but surprisingly not as crowded as other summer months. Italy celebrates its Ferragosto in August which means a lot of Romans escape the city for a long break, making it less busy and more affordable - if you can get things booked early.

Yes, I was going to suggest this. Do not take a backpack. a) they are too hot and b) they are less secure. The people we saw with backpacks were wearing them on their front.
